But the thing where the police then showed up to turn off the lights and camera while one of their number stood with his big loving rifle pointed down the street as if he was prepared to reflexively fire on any and all people on a residential street in the US was creepy as hell.

Americans tend to pronounce a lot of words with a 't' in them with a 'd' instead (water->wadder, butter->budder). Piñatas aren't really a thing in the UK so John probably picked up the pronunciation from some American friends and you're noticing it more because he has a British accent and actually pronounces the letter 't' in other words.
