if you are on board with any part of microsoft's strategy that seems like the only sane outcome: write an app with tablet and phone interfaces, compile/run unmodified on every microsoft device.

if you abandon that goal nothing they are doing makes any sense

Sega only semi-hosed up initially with the segacd and 32x but then went full on crazy for the saturn (i mean honestly, when has given someone 8 less months to develop something ever worked out well, and that's assuming you actually tell them in advance) and they just burned so many bridges with it that it was impossible to recover

if ea hates your guts enough to not make games for you on principle you're kinda hosed

for consoles maybe, but they are absolutely killing it with the 3ds (sony has pretty much given up on the vita)

also they've sold like 3 times as many Wii-U's as PS4's at this point in japan and are selling faster than ps4's right now (although only barely this week, they sold 50 more wii u's than ps4's)

blackberry assumed that a smartphone having a battery life of only one day would be considered a problem

also the demo was a stage managed duct taped bag of hell that was constantly crashing and half-finished at best

the iphone 1 wasn't very good but drat if it didn't look cooooool, it's the iphone 4 that wrecked the competition's poo poo so completely and utterly that it took every other smartphone maker two years just to blink their eyes and figure out what the gently caress was going on

iphone 1 was the first smart phone actually. the ones before were marketed as smart phones of course, and people called them "smart phones." but they weren't.

betting the company on the playbook comes close (a $700 tablet that required pairing with a separate bb phone to do email or messaging) but mostly bbry just seemed satisfied to sit tight and not update their boom-boom-pow bold phones for several years, and by the time they noticed they were in trouble is was way too late to do anything about it

lots of companies in bbrys position underestimated the iphone and most crucially the app store until they were completely hosed. palm, nokia, rimm, moto, msft all failed to make the transition

xbone is something else. the 360 was a solid machine (bad bet on hd-dvd and rrod notwithstanding) and it arguably beat the ps3 (which had a horrible launch, bad pricing, weird policies, and service and security failures). msft took every advantage they built up with the 360 and just threw it away with the xbone. always on, built in kinect, crappy performance, spies on you, no used games, shows you ads everywhere, more expensive (that kinect), evasive and contradictory official communications, and on and on and on. they took all the goodwill and brand equity and experience theyd built up over the first two iterations of the xbox and gleefully set it on fire, and for no reason
