Black food tends to look pretty awful, but I'd at least try them. Squid ink sauces can be good, though they do tend to be bitter.

(And I just realized I set myself up for a fast food racist joke. Oh well.)

Are advertising laws that much different in Japan?

In the US, if you advertise a food, you have to use the actual food in the ad. Granted, they do a whole bunch of weird poo poo to it, but it IS the actual food.

Though yeah, the food you order will still never look as good as the picture:

As said, they don't use plastic burgers but they do make it look as good as possible. Examples of stuff they'll do:

- Go through dozens of packs of buns to find the "perfect" one

- Half cook the meat so it still looks juicy and doesn't shrink

- Load all the toppings on one side so that you can see them through the bun

- Use way more toppings than you'd normally get

ect.

Now imagine being an actor in a commercial that has to pretend to eat that monster.

McDonalds did have a video explaining the process they go towards making it look nice, and it's to the extremes, such as a picking and choosing how many seeds on a bun, and carefully heat-gunning the cheese to drape nicely over the beef.

And the old trick of making attractive steaming food, by microwaving a wet tampon.

One aspect of food advertising is that it has to display everything you get in the item, so it's why you have sauce and slivers of onion peeking out.

Hell if you want real food nightmares, start comparing packaged goods.
