Who for?

Dave's autobiography would just be "I watched some wrestling, Then I watched some more wrestling, Then I wrote about it a lot. Oh and I was the ring rat for most of All Japan's women division."

Are you loving high? The amount of stories he probably has about this insane, opaque industry he's been covering for decades would be fascinating. I'd expect that for this to be good he'd have to do it towards the end of his life though.

He has. But he more or less didn't want to betray confidences.

Nearly ten years ago he said that he essentially had a retirement plan of a six figure deal with a major publisher for a Vince McMahon biography. But when asked again within the last year he seemed dismissive of writing that book. It sounded like again he didn't want to betray confidences and he didn't want to get sued. Obviously the publishing industry has changed dramatically in ten years to the point the deal he mentioned is probably off the table and/or the deal has been greatly reduced in value or the publisher is out of business.

The big thing is that writing a book would prevent him from writing the Observer. His bread and butter financially and something obviously that he is hardwired into writing after all these years. Dave is also very paranoid about losing having his finger on the pulse of the Wrestling business. Believing that it changes every few months.

The thing is that his opinions are mostly the same ones that everyone has, even those internet fans he doesn't like that much. People would listen more if he didn't push the same points into every conversation. He talks as if it's the first time that anyone is listening.

I'm pretty sure most fans are not longing for the return of DQ's for closed fists or time limits. But yeah, regardless of the fact that his opinions are way outdated, it would be more tolerable if he didn't consistently interrupt his interviewees to rant about something completely tangential. I had to turn off his otherwise interesting Sting interview because of Ross not being able to shut up.

JR's opinions are literally just:

Tell good stories
Have satisfying conclusions
Have wrestling be the focus of the wrestling show
Sonic is good

So he's 75% right and nobody is disagreeing with him, but the tone of condescension is off the charts. Also, at least Stone Cold and Jericho pretend to care about the products in their ads. JR's DDP Yoga starts with him saying that wrestlers are hucksters full of bullshit.

Well you see if you listen to Jim Cornette you get these opinions (well, with Wendy's instead of Sonic) but with other goon-approved opinions such as "gently caress Republicans" and "there is no God" instead of "I became a man when my dad made me kill puppies"

I'll never get over that the one episode WWE promoted on TV was one where he and Kevin Nash talk about their assholes for 45 minutes.

To be fair though Cornette is also deprecating enough to say that he know how he sounds. It comes across differently when you're self aware. When Cornette does it it sounds more like how he would do things. When JR does it it's because it's how he thinks it should be.

Cornette's ability to wrestle-talk carried over into pod-casting, sadly JR's hasn't.

I thought the Bill Watts interview was pretty good - probably because JR holds him in such high regard that he actually sat back and mostly let Watts talk. Watts is as self-serving and revisionist as anybody else but he speaks well and - like JR - I do agree with a number of the things he has to say about what ISN'T working in wrestling. It's pretty clear just how huge an influence Watts did have on JR (at his own admission) since they pretty much share identical opinions on a large number of things, but I do think they both seem not to have quite grasped that as valid an opinion it is that the loss of the territories was detrimental in many ways for wrestlers.... the territories aren't just gone, they can NEVER come back, that simply isn't the way the world works anymore. We don't all live in small isolated communities with little access to what is going on in other places anymore. The closest you are going to get is the various independents, which isn't the same thing at all, and even those can have their various shows accessed from all around the world - results wise at least if not filmed content.

I would love to hear Watts on a show like Austin or Jericho's though, if only because they would follow through on a lot of the enticing subjects that Watts casually mentions that JR ignores in favor of some other question he had prepared.

The deal with Cornette is his poo poo is upfront. There's no skullduggery with him. If he fucks you over, he lets everyone know.

I'm biased with Cornette because I shook his hand at a ROH show before he was involved with it. Its solid. No test of strength poo poo. Not limp either.

I'm curious to see what Russo's or JR's handshake is like.
