Now I know nothing of the american tax system, but confirm for me that poor people in the states still pay a shitload of taxes, especially those kinds of taxes such as sales tax that hit poor people proportionally heavier?
I mean, I know the answer, but I just want some counterweight to the sheer ill-informed madness that your right-wing politicians foist on people like freepers.
There are a wide range of regressive taxes such as the sales tax and gasoline tax, and various other things baked into prices here and there. These tend to hit the poorest hardest, of course. Some things are not taxed; typically, the big one is unprepared food, which is why sales tax is often absent or only applied to a few things at the supermarket.
However, 'taxpaying' in this context usually refers to income tax, which is levied in a progressive way - to paraphrase Thomas Jefferson, who was for it, all those below a certain level are untaxed, while those of increasing means are taxed increasingly more - and property tax, which is dependent on the assessed value of your property and which I can't comment much on. Income tax is often held to be awful and horrible; property tax seems to be grudgingly accepted as legitimate in theory if not in the terms of the present rate.
The usual 'flat tax' solution is to charge some huge national sales tax, in the neighborhood of 30% or so, with rebates (maybe) for the poor and busted, or exemptions for things like basic food, or for buying secondhand goods (?). This would increase the burden on the poor substantially, while relieving the very richest from even the almost-token taxes they pay now. (The maximum income tax rate - which is only assessed on the slice of earnings above a certain level - is I believe 39.6%. Income from investments is taxed far lower.)
e: Oh yes, and payroll tax too, that's a significant one.

You forgot to mention they don't have a clue what a progressive tax is. They believe being paid 1$ into the next tax bracket means they get taxed more and thus make less by what ever percent.

Yeah I didn't get it for a while either, I think it's that the term "tax bracket" confused me. I think this might be because the word "bracket" in English tends to mean totally separate things. Upon finding out how the income tax actually works I thought "...oh. That makes perfect sense!"
Sad part is it's not loving confusing at all. However it's just so prevalent a lie that it's become truth to a lot of people.

As others mentioned there's all sorts of taxes and poo poo, like sales taxes, that are rather regressive.
Which is why as much as the conservatives scream until they're blue, illegal immigrants are actually a wonderful boon for the government due to taxes. There's no magical "wetback logistics train" going back to Mexico, so immigrant crop workers and other immigrant workers get their food, gas, clothes, etc at the same places we do and as such they pay sales tax on all of it. How much do they get out of the government? Jack and poo poo.
True, each individual immigrant gives a tiny amount due to the fact that even if they're not working illegally low wages they're generally working and living at poverty levels, but "a tiny bit of pure profit" x "a few million" = "a good sized chunk of pure profit" as far as the IRS and Treasury is concerned.

Mormons believe there were two waves in the ancient settlement of North America. First were the Jaredites, whose first king (Jared) successfully appealed to God to allow them to keep the universal language after His destruction of the Tower of Babel. Jared's people crossed the sea in divinely inspired magical barges and settled the Americas as their Promised Land. The Jaredites warred incessantly with each other, and destroyed their own civilization.
Just after this a second group, Israelites who escaped the destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonians through divine guidance and sailed from the Red Sea to the Americas in another fleet of magical barges circa the 6th century. They arrived to find the Jaredites a scattered, primitive people and started settling the Americas as their Promised Land. Eventually they broke into factions, the bad guys were cursed with dark skin and slowly overwhelmed the pious white people, till finally the last Native American white man, Moroni, buried a metal book containing the story of all this as well as a magical breastplate and 'seer stones' that allowed the wearer to translate the book under a mound in either Ohio or upstate New York.
The Native Americans found by white settlers were the victorious descendants of Lehi's people who, like the Jaredites before them, destroyed their own high civilization through incessant internecine war. Christian Europeans represent the third and final group to be given the Americas as a promised land, with Mormons as the purest and most enlightened of all since only they know the true history of the continent and worship in the ways preserved in Moroni's book. Joseph Smith said he dug up the book, breastplate and stones under the guidance of the now-angelic Moroni in the early 19th century, but the angel took the artifacts to heaven once the Book of Mormon (Moroni's father, the last high priest of his people) was fully translated into English.
E: also the followers of Lehi were the first Christians because he received prophetic visions of Jesus and the crucifixion six centuries before they happened.
E2: Those Scots economic philosphers sure did get around didn't they?

I found this post in response to a science article on the New Horizons mission to pluto, and thought it was freepy-enough to share.
quote:Remember when they tried to tell us that Pluto is not a planet. And then they said mars does not have frozen water on it and that it's north and south poles are frozen carbon they still say these things to us but not as much as they use to. Next they will say 2+2=5. Wake up sheeple use your brains. Believe me the USA has better pictures of Pluto they just don't want us seeing them. They even sent robots to Pluto years ago I believe in the 1970s. You can try to look it up online but you won't find it they took it all off the internet. Now I know there is going to be some wise guy on here that will say that I'm lying because we don't have the technology to travel to Pluto and that it would take a lot of fuel and that even it we had the fuel it would take a long time to reach Pluto at the speed our ships are going now. Here is my answer to that question we flown our ships to Jupiter and used Jupiter gravity to catapult from Jupiter to Pluto at great speed and so there for we did not need much fuel or a faster ship.

Okay, Bloomberg is a big fat socialist RINO. What is Bloomberg Media?
You know.... those LIEberals aren't so bad when they're paying you
HiTech RedNeck posted:Well, the HiTech RedNeck is looking for a job... AGAIN. This job hopping is getting old, but the boss of the group, at a major freight railroad, for which I'm a contractor has an integrity problem, to put it delicately. For some reason, I don't get along very well with liars and phonies.
Well, I refreshed my resumes on Dice and Monster this past weekend and crossed my fingers. Well this morning what do I behold, but someone wants to know if I am interested in working for a company that turns out to be BLOOMBERG MEDIA.
They are quoting a super deluxe benefits package and money they are saying is in the mid to high six figures.
I've come across Bloomberg from time to time but there wasn't a match. Now they want a C++ guru, and I can say my experience with C++ goes back almost to when it was invented.
Well... okay we agree on who Bloomberg is. But what about his flagship media company. I haven't seen many particularized complaints about it here, which strikes me as odd since the alphabet agencies get excoriated regularly. I don't know what they are doing with all this C++ yet, unless it is to customize news feeds. Would working for them be to be in the belly of the beast? I don't see much news originated from Bloomberg, but they gather news stories (whether true or false) quite well.

Bloomberg’s been one of the biggest portals for business news forever. Looks like Bloomberg Media does the same for news from online media and social media sites (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) My guess is the former Mayor doesn’t have much to do with it beyond the name. Sounds like a great opportunity!

Like when I worked at MSNBC. You wanna talk about the belly of the beast?! There, you could tell the conservatives because they were the ones than never talked politics. There was a sports editor and the senior business editor, and a few more but not very many.

I sort of get the idea that these folks are aggregating business intelligence for those who will pay beaucoup $$ to see it first.
There might be some bounds on how that could be used in market trading, due to rules on trading based on nonpublic information, but also just plain business decisions could depend upon it too.
If so, it would be uber-capitalist. I’d be tickled to be part of a tycoon tax, so to speak, as long as that was voluntary on the part of the tycoons.

What made the US government so corrupt nowadays is the enormous increase in its powers, primarily with the passing of the 16th Amendment in 1913 to legalize income taxes on the Federal level and the enormous increase in economic control during the 1930's under the New Deal.
The easiest one to fix is a drastic simplification of our tax code. I would prefer a quick transition to the flat tax that Steve Forbes proposed in 1996, then 3-4 years down the road phase out the income tax in favor of FairTax. Just this change would be the most liberating thing to happen to the USA since the American Revolution.

This is indeed a disturbing universe.
|
quote:To: Psalm 73
We don’t hate government. We hate tyrants who run our government corruptly to remove the freedoms our founding fathers fought so hard for and one that goes against the will of the people using the MSM to spread propaganda and distort facts to make us believe that more people are on board with their programs than there really are. One that inoctrinates our own children to hate us and train them up in foreign ideologies to assist our enemies in overthrowing our nation.
Context means everything.

As we get closer to Thanksgiving, we should get our annual crop of "my goddamn liberal kids never call/don't want me to come for dinner!" posts.
Always framed as 'I cut those LIEberal jerks out of my life and I feel great!'

Science is a strict system of beliefs that cannot change, adapt, or become more-consistent.
Now let me tell you about needles and camels.
I adhere to a strict system of beliefs that cannot change, adapt, or become more-consistent.
Therefore all other belief systems are like this too.
