There are a wide range of regressive taxes such as the sales tax and gasoline tax, and various other things baked into prices here and there. These tend to hit the poorest hardest, of course. Some things are not taxed; typically, the big one is unprepared food, which is why sales tax is often absent or only applied to a few things at the supermarket.

However, 'taxpaying' in this context usually refers to income tax, which is levied in a progressive way - to paraphrase Thomas Jefferson, who was for it, all those below a certain level are untaxed, while those of increasing means are taxed increasingly more - and property tax, which is dependent on the assessed value of your property and which I can't comment much on. Income tax is often held to be awful and horrible; property tax seems to be grudgingly accepted as legitimate in theory if not in the terms of the present rate.

The usual 'flat tax' solution is to charge some huge national sales tax, in the neighborhood of 30% or so, with rebates (maybe) for the poor and busted, or exemptions for things like basic food, or for buying secondhand goods (?). This would increase the burden on the poor substantially, while relieving the very richest from even the almost-token taxes they pay now. (The maximum income tax rate - which is only assessed on the slice of earnings above a certain level - is I believe 39.6%. Income from investments is taxed far lower.)

e: Oh yes, and payroll tax too, that's a significant one.

As others mentioned there's all sorts of taxes and poo poo, like sales taxes, that are rather regressive.

Which is why as much as the conservatives scream until they're blue, illegal immigrants are actually a wonderful boon for the government due to taxes. There's no magical "wetback logistics train" going back to Mexico, so immigrant crop workers and other immigrant workers get their food, gas, clothes, etc at the same places we do and as such they pay sales tax on all of it. How much do they get out of the government? Jack and poo poo.

True, each individual immigrant gives a tiny amount due to the fact that even if they're not working illegally low wages they're generally working and living at poverty levels, but "a tiny bit of pure profit" x "a few million" = "a good sized chunk of pure profit" as far as the IRS and Treasury is concerned.

Mormons believe there were two waves in the ancient settlement of North America. First were the Jaredites, whose first king (Jared) successfully appealed to God to allow them to keep the universal language after His destruction of the Tower of Babel. Jared's people crossed the sea in divinely inspired magical barges and settled the Americas as their Promised Land. The Jaredites warred incessantly with each other, and destroyed their own civilization.

Just after this a second group, Israelites who escaped the destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonians through divine guidance and sailed from the Red Sea to the Americas in another fleet of magical barges circa the 6th century. They arrived to find the Jaredites a scattered, primitive people and started settling the Americas as their Promised Land. Eventually they broke into factions, the bad guys were cursed with dark skin and slowly overwhelmed the pious white people, till finally the last Native American white man, Moroni, buried a metal book containing the story of all this as well as a magical breastplate and 'seer stones' that allowed the wearer to translate the book under a mound in either Ohio or upstate New York.

The Native Americans found by white settlers were the victorious descendants of Lehi's people who, like the Jaredites before them, destroyed their own high civilization through incessant internecine war. Christian Europeans represent the third and final group to be given the Americas as a promised land, with Mormons as the purest and most enlightened of all since only they know the true history of the continent and worship in the ways preserved in Moroni's book. Joseph Smith said he dug up the book, breastplate and stones under the guidance of the now-angelic Moroni in the early 19th century, but the angel took the artifacts to heaven once the Book of Mormon (Moroni's father, the last high priest of his people) was fully translated into English.

E: also the followers of Lehi were the first Christians because he received prophetic visions of Jesus and the crucifixion six centuries before they happened.

I haven't seen many particularized complaints about it here, which strikes me as odd since the alphabet agencies get excoriated regularly. I don't know what they are doing with all this C++ yet, unless it is to customize news feeds. Would working for them be to be in the belly of the beast? I sort of get the idea that these folks are aggregating business intelligence for those who will pay beaucoup $$ to see it first.

There might be some bounds on how that could be used in market trading, due to rules on trading based on nonpublic information, but also just plain business decisions could depend upon it too.

If so, it would be uber-capitalist. I’d be tickled to be part of a tycoon tax, so to speak, as long as that was voluntary on the part of the tycoons.

Yeah Joe I really don’t feel like being invaded by a people I’m forced to pay higher taxes on to give them the things I can’t have because of your stupid economic policies’ effects. I also don’t want to be overcrowded and not be able to have access to some of the governmen’t’s programs when I’ve been here all my life and paid taxes for decades especilly for those who haven’t paid a dime. And especially because I’m not happy because you’re bankrupting our system while using them as a political to ensure that pople of your kind stay in office and Cloward Pivening us at the same time. Don’t think they contribute to bankrupting government? I can give you a list of many municipalities in California that can set you straight...

What made the US government so corrupt nowadays is the enormous increase in its powers, primarily with the passing of the 16th Amendment in 1913 to legalize income taxes on the Federal level and the enormous increase in economic control during the 1930's under the New Deal.
The easiest one to fix is a drastic simplification of our tax code. I would prefer a quick transition to the flat tax that Steve Forbes proposed in 1996, then 3-4 years down the road phase out the income tax in favor of FairTax. Just this change would be the most liberating thing to happen to the USA since the American Revolution.

No diminished capacity defense. I don’t care if Biden is an idiot. He’s a Traitor first, last and always, and deserves the Traitors fate.

Biden must read this thread. Why else would he (safely) throw rocks at the hornet's nest?

Everyone say hi to him. Hi Diamond Joe!!

We don’t hate government. We hate tyrants who run our government corruptly to remove the freedoms our founding fathers fought so hard for and one that goes against the will of the people using the MSM to spread propaganda and distort facts to make us believe that more people are on board with their programs than there really are. One that inoctrinates our own children to hate us and train them up in foreign ideologies to assist our enemies in overthrowing our nation.

Context means everything.
