I don't like the alien weapons too much (and the only aesthetic options being generic or purple doesn't help) but I love the disintegrator that you use to kill Veteran Child. I upgraded and rolled with that thing the rest of the game, vaporizing scrub after scrub.

Somehow I already have the tentacle bat and it's been hard not to try and use it on everything. Taking down those shield stations has been a bitch though because enemies teleport in from all over the goddamn place.

EDIT: I'm disappointed to see the same lovely Insurance Fraud bug from SR 3 is still around. It makes it basically unwinnable since most drivers just stop at the intersection, or stop before they hit you. Typically drivers only drive fast if they're out of your field of view. In SR 2 everyone in the target area would go apeshit and they broke it with SR 3. Just tried a mission four times in a row and couldn't even get halfway to the goal.

Run at superspeed, ragdoll once you hit max speed, and do perpetual spinning ragdoll aerial loops literally across the entire map, occasionally clipping into a car to bump up your earnings. If you're playing Insurance Fraud in SR4 like you did in SR3, you're doing it wrong.

Insurance Fraud is easy once you figure out that it's about keeping momentum and the superpowers in SR4 make gaining momentum trivial.

As others have said, the goal isn't to get hit by cars, it is to throw yourself into them. Superspeed towards the biggest truck you can find, ragdoll into it and just cartwheel across half the map trying to hit a vehicle everytime you 'bounce'. Once you get the hang of it Insurance Fraud is trivially easy, I've replayed the game twice and I don't think I had to retry even once for gold.

Yeah I never had any fun with SR3 insurance fraud, but carthweeling around the whole city in 4 was all kinds of awesome. The superpowers really make some of the - in earlier games - potentially annoying activities quite fun (eg. mayhem).

Would it be worth it to give Saints Row II and III a go after IV or should i just wait for the next one?

My Lovely Horse
Aug 21, 2010

II is a very different game from IV and particularly the control scheme will seem dated, but it's well worth getting into for the different approach and more grounded story. III suffers a little from development troubles, but if you've gone all out with the superpowers in IV you might appreciate seeing Steelport from the ground level.

I actually really enjoy the combat of SRIII, as it really narrows down the run-and-gun style that is clunky in SR2 and is pretty much abandoned in SRIV for zipping around everywhere. It's just unfortunate that the plot and pacing are so schizophrenic that you practically need to follow a guide to make it work.

That said, SR2 has so much more going on in every nook and cranny that it really does still hold up just from the sheer amount of content, roughness of the gameplay aside. It's easily the Morrowind to SRIV's Skyrim.

Dick Trauma

You can skip 1 but 2 was the high water mark for the series. You're actually a crime-lord and not just running around in a destruction simulator. It was also the densest in terms of all the little things they like to stuff into SR games. 3 was a turn toward the extreme that didn't make much of an impression on me and 4 is basically Crackdown with swearing.

Except for the mission design. SR2 is extremely padded with some very dull missions.

Stillwater itself is a joy to explore, but anyone looking to play SR2 needs to know that SR2's mission design is heavily rooted in GTA territory. There are some standouts but a lot of the story missions are just dull and get repetitive quickly.

It's almost Final Fantasy-esque in that you put up with the gameplay to enjoy the cutscenes.

I don't think it's all that bad. It has pretty huge issues, but all you really need to know is:

a) in the cutscene after your first big choice, they're on the way to the funeral; only one option actually tells you this
and b) a little bit about plot structure: each of your new friends has 2-3 activities given as missions before their actual story missions start. With each one, when you hit a mission that's just a cutscene, that's when you know the next one's where things kick off.

To be fair, all open-world crime game missions are 80% cutscene->drive to place while listening to characters talk->kill thirty people->repeat. SR2 is just great at making those cutscenes match the silly tone of the rest of the game.

It was just setup in a weird way, like how you have the mission to do Tiger Escort for Angel and the reaction to that (literally just you going back to his gym and saying "A loving TIGER?") is it's own separate mission, so if you decide to jump between all the different mission chains you can easily gently caress up the joke by not getting to the punchline for a few hours because you decided to dick around with Zimos instead.

It is important to avoid confusion. This is the one that's okay to lick.

I'm on my second playthrough of II now and wow do I miss the controls from 3/4. I've started flying to every mission in a Tornado just because about a third of them seem to end with "drive through the streets with our horrible controls and try to kill moving targets."

I love the game world, though. It's fantastic and dense. The passers-by react to you differently as the story develops. When you pass 50% completion, Ezzzy 105 gets bought by Ultor and becomes a world music station. When you completely control an area and buy all the stores, your face starts appearing on billboards. There's stuff happening in Stilwater, and you only see some of it. I love wandering around the town.

But oh my god are some of the missions terrible. Donnie. Any mission where the AI drives. The missions that have random timers for no real reason. Donnie. I have a lot more fun when I'm playing the missions/activities in 3 and 4, even though the seams of cut content show in 3.

Also don't touch SR2 unless you install the Gentlemen of the Row mod, but good news: it probably won't run without it now.

Someone else will have details to drop but SR 2 on PC is widely recognized as one of the worst PC ports ever. Barley worked at release and is certainly broken to all hell on modern machines without modification. Something something about in game action tied to PC clock speed looking for an xbox 360 processor something.

No, I meant "What has changed that means it will no longer run unmodded?" I've run it unmodded tons of times. Depending on your computer and OS it sometimes runs without any issues, and I haven't heard of it just not working at all for any significant number of people.

I'm pretty sure it's mostly broken unmodded on Win XP and 7, whereas it's fine for some reason on 8 and 8.1. The main thing I think is that driving is tied to your PC's clock speed and if it doesn't hit 3.2 MHz or something, the driving speed will be off.

Look, there's no argument to be had here, if SR3/4 Female Voice 1 and SR2 Female Voice 1 were locked in a cage match to the death, they'd both expertly counter each others' punches before realizing that they work better as a team and joining forces to eliminate whatever evil forces was putting voices into deathmatches. They're both the best around.
