Their Kickstarter page mentions them showing off the concept to none other than President Obama. In theory, it looks like something with real potential. It's just that given the history of Kickstarter and the consequences of something like this not working properly when you need it, I get this nagging feeling that something is waiting to go horribly wrong. I think the idea there is that instead of un-taping and re-taping the camera every time you use it, one of the magnets is permanently taped in place. If you actually use the camera in question on a regular basis, the latter would be substantially more convenient and last way longer.

PHIZ KALIFA posted:So if it's permanently taped in place, why use a magnet at all? One magnet is taped solidly in place. The other magnet is attached only through the magnetism to the taped magnet. It's slightly thinner than the taped one, so it can rotate freely around the taped one without actually touching the device's surface (so it won't scuff the glass or whatever). It's basically just a hinge with no mechanical linkage. It can come off easily (so you'll probably lose it within a week).

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/263766519/whiskey-elements-customize-your-whiskey-in-24-hour Selling audiophile-style woo to whiskey drinkers. "The reason your well whiskey tastes like rear end is that it hasn't been exposed to enough wood, so stick this carved swizzle stick in your booze for 24 hours, and it'll magically turn it into top-shelf." And the stupid loving thing is overfunded nearly 10x. (The irony is, wood surface area IS a thing in whiskey production -- using a smaller barrel increases the surface-area-to-volume ratio, allowing you to get a similar flavor in less time. You're basically trading a higher cost of production for a faster turnaround.)

Then they uncaring enough to spam their "friends" to scam them for only a few thousand dollars.

AlbieQuirky posted:It's a thing already. A loving stupid thing, if you ask me. Let's not forget this clownfish, either. To be fair, at least there's a feasible method of action. Oak is a complex organic substance and contains all sorts of oils and aromatic compounds, and it's perfectly believable that alcohol stored in contact with oak would take on flavours as those compounds leeched out of the oak. After all, whiskey IS aged in oak barrels and it does change the flavour. Heck, wood can be pretty absorbent, it could even remove certain undesirable compounds I'm not saying it DOES make a huge difference to the flavour, but unlike 90% of magic hi-fi audiophile woo at least it COULD. I'd be interested to see a properly blinded test of some of these products, either an opinion test of the pre and post treatment whiskeys or an A-B-X test Assuming it does have some detectable positive effect, what's scammy is they're selling magic one-use swizzle sticks they mae for 5 cents for twelve dollars a pop, rather than a little bag of oak wood chips for a few cents

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1243275397/air-umbrella Air-Umbrella. Why buy a cheap umbrella that works for life when you can have a battery-powered electronic wind-blowing umbrella that costs a ton of money, only works for 30 minutes, and has to be constantly recharged? Looks vaguely like one of those totally-not-a-dildo massagers sold at sharper image. But wait until you see these diagrams! (MS paint; oh yes) Oh, so that's where the rain goes. That's a little confusing welp now that's cleared up Hilariously CNet totally bought into the idea and wrote an article all about it: http://www.cnet.com/news/umbrella-keeps-you-dry-with-invisible-force-field-of-air/ Also there's a small one for females, because women can't handle big manly umbrellas. And then there's two other versions, because reasons. It works for one or two people only, unless there isn't much rain in which case it suddenly becomes available for more people. Have fun crowding around the person holding the vibrator!
