Don't get tricked, Compile Heart is now, and always will be, creepy as poo poo. Just because someone else (or them, as it turns out) managed to outdo them doesn't mean that poo poo is kosher.

E: That said, yeah, play what you like. Just own the creepiness.

I mean, I actually kind of like the more recent Neptunia games, at least at the price I got them at but that's in spite of the creepy stuff and not because of it. It's fine to enjoy them, I just don't see how anyone can claim they aren't skeevy.

I am probably going to get this. Don't put me on a watch list. Neptunia annoyed me in general, including combat, it wasn't just any one thing in particular.

SO4 voice acting and inane script got me. I have to admit that Edge Maverick is a cool name though (love 80s action flicks).

I POSTED WHAT NOW!?
My refusal to buy Compile Heart was isn't just because they're creepy. I mean, they are, but I've played Ar Nosurge, so I can handle a little poo poo (gently caress the monster rubbing game though). I played Hyperdimension Neptunia though, and by the time I finished the game I hated myself for putting up with a completely shoddy battle system, a poo poo as gently caress story, and a game that felt like it was being held together with paper clips and dental floss despite having the graphical capabilities of a Ps2 game.

I don't care if their later games are more well made, or they even found a way to somehow make them fun! They made that gigantic piece of poo poo and they will never get another dollar from me.

The original Hyperdimension Neptunia must be one of the worst JRPGs on the PS3. I mean, they're still not amazing, just merely okay but the leap in quality between the original Neptunia and it's sequels is ridiculous.

It's also ridiculous Neptunia even became a franchise because the first game was so bad.

What happened with Compile Heart's output is that they hired Keiji Inafune's consulting company to come and tell them what they were doing wrong when the were making Neptunia 2. As far as I can tell he basically told them "I understand you want to make something unique but all your ideas are poo poo, stick to tacking gimmicks onto a generic skeleton like everyone else does." This caused their battle systems to jump from "aggressively terrible" to "mediocre to average" except for Agarest 2 where for some reason they fished the Cross Edge engine (which is to say, the system two revisions before the first Neptunia) out from it's better not to ask where. Everything else remains the same old Compile Heart bullshit.

Everything on the wiki is pretty good, but broadly speaking: Aht's traps are ridiculously broken, the sidequest At Journey's End has some really annoying requirements you may want to look up, and because you can time travel to any point in the story it's impossible to really lock yourself out of anything.

So, about the name Edge Maverick.

I never touched SO4, how does the game treat this name? Is it owning the ridiculousness, or does it try to pretend that's a perfeclty sensible name to have?

i always thought leon was a cool character as a kid

e: lol

quote:

As for your second question, the writers of SO3 say that Felpools are a genetic regression. They show more of their ancestors animalistic traits than those around them. Basically a backwards genetic mutation. That's the cop-out excuse that tri-Ace used to explain why a Felpool was on Expel.

Now, here's the REAL reason why. Remember that back when Star Ocean: The Second Story was released, the original Star Ocean was virtually unheard of. The first Star Ocean (which as we all know, featured Felpools as the dominant race on Roak) didn't even break 250,000 copies sold, since it came out in 1996 on the near dead Super Famicom. At that time, the PS1 had already been out in Japan for a year. Enix America also had pretty much said "Sorry, we're not making any games for the Super Nintendo anymore". Therefore, when they wrote Star Ocean 2 for the PS1, they decided to include a Felpool for the few players out there who actually HAD played the first Star Ocean.

However, as history would have it, by the time Star Ocean 3 came out for the PS2, emulation was at it's peak. Fan translations of Star Ocean 1 were being widely distributed across the internet. In an attempt to make "logical" sense of Leon being the only Felpool on Expel, they decided to try to explain it in Star Ocean 3, albeit poorly.

I'm not exactly optimistic because as i understand it's a srpg/porn game with the porn stripped out which makes me think it's not exactly a good srpg and it doesn't even have the porn to fall back on anymore!

It's like half visual novel, half SRPG. It's pretty good, at least early on. Reminds me a bit of Jeanne d'Arc on the PSP. The VN portion of the game is a LOT of the "gameplay" though. Loooooots of talking. Battles are fun though.

I'm early on and it's.... ok so far? It's a royal power struggle story, pretty anime but it's all played straight. I'm really too early to tell you definitively, sorry. :(

It's... eh? "Eh" is the word for it. The combat system is competent but boring and I really don't think the SD graphics benefit the game any. It's also insanely text-heavy. You'll go a long time before you get anything more than a tutorial fight. I wasn't super-engrossed by the story but it's clearly the main selling point. The RPG stuff feels mostly average and perfunctory.

It's kind of hard to recommend/not recommend because I feel like if the story grabs you you'll enjoy it. I'd hold out for a price drop at minimum.

neat, thanks, I'll hold out for a while yeah. I'm not opposed to a game who's main selling point is the story as long as the gameplay isn't bad (see above post), but if the best anyone has to say about the story is "you might like it, who knows" I may pass.

Also i'm vaguely curious, do you just speak japanese or do you get review copies to have played all these games by the time they come out?
