Haven't read the thread in awhile, so might be a little late, but anyone check out the new Disentomb? Easily some of the best brutal death metal that has came out in awhile. While I don't like most brutal-death metal anymore, this release is definitely refreshing and the riffs, holy gently caress. Very reminiscent of Defeated Sanity IMO but that's not a bad thing.

Came here to see if anyone had talked about Disentomb's new album yet; it's psychotically heavy. It and the new Cerebral Effusion are two of my favorite releases this year. Definitely agreeing with the Defeated Sanity vibe.

anyway enough of this poo poo who wants to learn about cool NZ extreme metal bands? basically lots of people don't know anything about these guys but they rule. Some of them have been going for as long as a lot of european acts, but haven't recorded much until recently, which is probably why they're not well known. theres a lot of overlap between black, death and sometimes even doom metal here.

Sinistrous Diabolus are extremely sick death/doom from Christchurch(more like antichristchurch lmao). They put an ownage full length out last year which you should def. get if you're into grimy stuff like Disma, Incantation or whatever bands like that. Looks as though the dude has a new one in the works as well so keep an eye out for that.

Vassafor are somewhere in the black metal realm of things but they vary their sound a bit and have doom and death elements as well. they also have only 1 full length, but it's like 2 discs holy crap. They also own live, so if they happen to be touring(which doesn't happen much) go see them. I think the dude is working on a second album which is expected to be out next yearish, but not 100% sure on that. there's also a Vassafor/Sinistrous Diabolus split which came out this year and is a pro listen.

I'm not going to say much about Diocletian because you probably all know about them already but they're very good war metal. There's a few other bands around at the moment doing similar things, two worth mentioning are Heresiarch and Vesicant.

Skuldom are a black metal band who've been on hiatus for like 6 years, but they're playing a show on Saturday which is going to own. they don't have a guitarist, in studio one of the basses is tuned to sound like a guitar, and live they're apparently distorted bass noises. they also have one of the grossest music videos ever.

I'm also going to mention local black metal dudes Blood of the Moon because they're really good live(the frontman has a bucket of blood that he tosses at people in between acting scary).

I don't know many older no longer active bands but there is some cool poo poo in there. theres a documentary radio NZ did recently about the metal scene here which I haven't listened to yet but apparently it's good and they interview most of the major players, you can find it here: http://www.radionz.co.nz/national/programmes/south-of-heaven

I like dinky folk metal 80% unironically. I was exposed to a lot of european folk music as a kid and I don't have trouble taking it seriously, so it's like a blend of ancient war music with modern war music. Trollfest are obviously a joke, but there are a couple of Finntroll albums I can listen to with near-complete seriousness. Is this weird?

Every time I listen to Revocation it's a case of "this sounds cool" and then I immediately forget everything when I'm done. They have a lot of talent and potential but they just don't stick with me. I will probably do the same thing with this album when I get around to it. I like a lot of weedly-deedly tech death so I always feel like I should enjoy them more (I realize they aren't tech death).

I saw them referred to as "the mallcore version of Annihilator" recently and I can't decide if that's accurate or stupid.

Well, they did have a spoken-word part in one song that said "there is no god" also what the gently caress was the deal with a really weird almost admiring song about the Columbine shooting? Were they dedicating it to the victims or the killers?

Those are the same song, Kinslayer. I can't really see how it could possibly be taken as admiration for the killers or anything, even less so when you consider what a ~*sensitive soul*~ Tuomas Holopainen is. That "There is no god" line along with other lines in the song is presented so that it's obviously one of the killers saying it.
And actually, don't just take my word for it:

Holopainen, on the band's website posted:

The event is something I will never understand. If something as horrible as this can happen in this world, there's no sense, no truth to cling to anymore. I find there's a great deal of symbolism hidden in this happening.

The dialogue in the middle of the song quotes the actual phrases between the killers and their schoolmates during the shooting. (According to those who survived)
Seriously, we're talking about a guy who recently released an album of sentimental film score music about Scrooge McDuck. Think what you will about his artistic talents, but a pro-homicide misanthrope he is not.

Personally I'm eager as hell to hear the album. From what I've read it's supposed to be somewhat more band-centric, and with all the new blood in the band I'm hopeful the new stuff will have some fresh ideas going for it.
