Food, clothes, transport, beds, ovens: the aid schools are giving UK pupilsquote:Pupil premium money, on which many of these heads rely to provide free breakfast clubs, uniform, educational trips, school transport and salaries for staff who are effectively working as school-based social workers, is not supposed to be spent in this way, points out Dr Sam Baars at the education thinktank LKMco. “The Department for Education warns against using the pupil premium to fill in for expired social welfare programmes,” he says, “so when it comes to this particular area of school funding, the guidance is explicitly not to spend it on welfare.” quote:These problems are not suddenly going to disappear. The Child Poverty Action Group says that the 3.5 million children already living in poverty will be joined by another 600,000 by 2016, with the total rising to 4.7 million by 2020. quote:If a child can’t access their right to education because of their living conditions, and there is no other support available, “then schools are morally bound to do whatever they can to help.” But, he says, “schools should not have to be a replacement for the welfare state”. This is absolutely appalling. I just saw a Save the Children advert appeal on TV for kids in the UK in situations like those too. The whole article's a terrible thing but the last quote stood out to me - schools, charities, food banks, family members, loan sharks and credit unions are all acting as replacements for the welfare state, and they're either not equipped or not intended to provide that support. edit: formatting Stottie Kyek fucked around with this message at 12:19 on Oct 17, 2014 |

Quick question, what does "in real terms" mean? It seems to be being used an awful lot by the Tories and their Quisling pals whenever anyone claims that they're cutting X, "We've raised NHS spending, in real terms".

It means nothing without a figure attached but it's the amount in relation to inflation so increasing spending in real terms by 1% would be increasing spending by 1% more than inflation

New polling is showing more support for the conservatives than labour in Scotland, don't know if that'll make it to the GE though. Electoral Calculus is predicting 4 Conservative seats, 1 each of Labour and Lib Dems and 46 for SNP based on last Yougov results. EC is flawed, but it shows a trend at least.

National subsections present a notoriously inaccurate picture of regional polling. The SNP are probably polling well but nowhere near that well. Someone really needs to do a tranche of Scottish constituency level polling because Labour's national picture becomes a lot more muddy if they actually have to fight for their Scottish heartlands. At the very least it would be a massive drain on their funds.

Pandering to little Englanders now that they don't have to worry so much about losing Scottish support? Could be anything, really).

I'll believe that Labour get 1 seat in Scotland when on 8th May, and even then I'd probably have to pinch myself because it just seems so utterly unlikely. I mean I could see 4 Tories, but 1 Labour is utterly impossible to imagine, & gently caress, even just the 1 Liberal seems unlikely. I mean between Orkney & Shetland (Alistair Carmichael) and Ross, Skye & Lochaber (Charles Kennedy) I'd expect at least 2. I also imagine John Thurso will keep his seat, there'd need to be a pretty big swing for them to lose any of those 3, and even with how popular the Liberals are nationwide, these are constituencies that have voted Liberal for decades. Although reading the site seems to suggest Ross, Skye, & Lochaber would be merged with Caithness & Sutherland? Had apparently missed that redrawing of the boundaries. And now I've read all that again & noticed it says "This prediction is based on the proposed new 2013 constituency boundaries". So what's the point of that? Those plans fell through. forkboy84 fucked around with this message at 15:30 on Oct 17, 2014 |

I'm expecting the SNP to get just over 20 seats, mostly from typically safe Labour constituencies in the Central Belt. Right, blackface Morris Dancing. Is this a genuine historical thing that has happened for years because poo poo, I grew up in Somerset and I saw probably your average amount of Morris Dancing, bells and sticks and all that clacking stuff. Generally rather un-inspiring bearded men for the most part. Not once can I recall seeing people blacked up. Is this a regional thing? Has it happened in parts of the country but I just never saw it, or is it a recent occurrence? I just can't believe it's an old tradition that I've never heard of. Perhaps it is. Also initially I thought David Cameron was an idiot for posing with those black face muppets, but reconsidering it, perhaps he wants to come across as a bit of a racist. Who the gently caress knows.

EC is flawed, but it shows a trend at least. going back to this, it's a UNS projection of a national crossbreak of a poll, it's about as representative as asking a few people in the pub how they'd vote. UNS works when you have a few parties changing relatively uniformly and not by huge amounts; the rise by UKIP (and it seems the SNP in Scotland as well) breaks it as lots of the movements will be more regional in nature and not universal - UKIP will probably perform well in seats in which they finished sixth with 0.5% in the last election, while it seems that most of the SNP rise is around the Central belt and especially near Glasgow, which UNS doesn't factor and simply raises UKIP's vote by 18% in everywhere they stood last year.

There's also Darkie Day in Cornwall which is just as bad as it sounds. As regards Zwarte Piet in the Netherlands, I lived there a little while and whether or not he was racist to start with he definitely is now (black Dutch don't perform Zwarte Piet and his most public defenders are their UKIP equivalent party, the Party for Freedom). They add comico-racist big lips and everything. That being said they'll probably change it somehow eventually because every year the discussion happens again and it's a little louder (last year the UN even called them out on it and the Amsterdam Zwarte Piet event was met by protestors).
