I was fine with Jinora, and I liked that Ikki got more screentime and showed that she could be resourceful and personable. I hope Meelo fades out for the rest of the season.

Did people forget Aang learning to open all seven of his chakras in like twenty minutes? I mean, the seventh got blocked for a while for plot reasons, but Korra dealt with her block for three years.

Revelry in the Dark

I thought the kids were the best part about the episode, honestly. They seemed exactly like kids who were going out on their first big trip. I thought Ikki shone through, what with her playing those guards like a fiddle. Reminded of Aang in a way. Maybe I just liked the fun tone as opposed to the serious nature the first three episodes had. Korra finally getting the poison out isn't really cheap, as she had spent six months with Toph. Pretty sure you just don't get over a traumatic experience like the final fight against the Red Lotus right away. I thought it was appropriate she finally let go of her emotional baggage almost four years after the incident. Sometimes those barriers are difficult for people to break through.

tl;dr: The episode was fine, if a bit excessive with some of the Meelo. Action will definitely pick up next week

It haunted her around the world for six months.

During the last thread when people were talking about how Korra was so much weaker than Aang since she had so much trouble taking out Zaheer even in the Avatar State, I said this:

Similarly, saying "oh I guess it was just a bunch of metal that was the problem LOOKS LIKE THE WRITERS hosed UP CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT ONCE AGAIN" completely ignores that the poison functions on a narrative level as poison to her soul. It is, literally and metaphorically, a reminder of the trauma she has suffered that has thrown her out of balance. Even as soon as it enters her body the poison serves this function, causing her to hallucinate all of her past enemies. And the reason her trauma has thrown her out of balance is because she hasn't learned from her enemies. She hasn't understood why these things have happened to her. In "Korra Alone" all she says about what Zaheer did to her is "A crazy man poisoned me." And as long as Korra sees Amon, Unalaq, and Zaheer as random crazy people with no real motive except to hurt her, she will always be afraid. That poison will always be inside her. In Korra's hallucination in the Red Lotus cave, she links all her foes by the common thread of them wanting to destroy the Avatar as part of their vision for a new world (something they share with Sozin.) Toph helps her see the other side of this. That all her enemies are linked by being people with positive ideals, who have been thrown horribly out of balance. And then Toph gives her a lesson that a lot of people were hoping to see in Book 1: the very true, very hard to accept lesson that bad people sometimes have good ideals at the core of what they do, and you should try to learn from them even when they hurt you. And that is what Korra needed to hear. That's what allows her to release the fear that's been poisoning her for three years. All this time she's been afraid of the very real possibility (really it's an inevitability) that returning to being the Avatar means sooner or later she's going to come into conflict with another fanatic. But now it will be different. Rather than another bullet point in a long list of traumas, she will face the challenge not as an existential threat, but as an opportunity for further growth so she can help shape the world. When she inevitably faces off against Kuvira, she will not be running away in terror, she will not be a blue giant, she will not be a mindless embodiment of wrath and pain. She will be Korra, standing against someone not unlike herself. And rather than being terrified by the similarities of their ideals, she will use that as her greatest strength, and shall, being balanced, prevail over Kuvira, who is out of balance.

It's gonna be legendary.

I'm assuming both he and Zaheer will return, along with somebody associated with season 2's plot (Varrik I guess?) and Korra will have a confrontation with an artifact of each of the previous villain plotlines. Each of them can represent how Kuvira stands at the opposite extreme of each of the previous villain's agendas: threatening equality with her conquest, the spirit/human balance with her abuse of spirits for technology, and freedom via fascism.

How about Desna and Eska instead of Varrick, since he's currently off with Kuvira and was never associated with Unalaq's plan? They grew up under the care of Unalaq and supported him until almost the end of Season 2. If anyone has insight into Unalaq's failings as a theocrat it's them. Or, you know, Tonraq since they grew up together, but I just want to see the twins again.

Ha, I love that Kuvira's having them pledge allegiance to her personally and the Earth "Nation" rather than Wu and the Earth "Kingdom." Unless the Kingdom/Nation mix-up is the translator's mistake.

Looking cute, feeling cute.
Hating an episode of a show aimed at kids because it focuses on the kiddie characters instead of focusing nonstop on the politics because this is a Very Serious Show For Adults is pretty laughable to me, but whatever. Meelo's an rear end in a top hat, but that's pretty much acknowledged and it's basically his thing.

A cute episode, though it was weirdly filler considering how plot-driven the entirety of season 3 and this season has been so far, which probably means the next episode will be a drama-fueled two-parter. This episode will probably seem better if (when) the entire season comes out on DVD and is seen back-to-back methinks as a breather.

Actually, I think it'd be neat if her PTSD wasn't banished completely. If it came back to haunt her later on, but she'd work through it and struggle onwards despite it. It should be something she'll live with for the rest of her life, but something that she can control, manage, and overcome in its worst aspects. I think it'd be pretty realistic, and uplifting.

Still, I'm glad we got Korra back, it's better to have some progress rather than having a character mope on it for the entire show, like Evangelion.

The Milo/Jinora/Ikki storyline from this episode was quite boring and annoying. Imo they should refrain from giving Milo too much screen time, cuz annoying lines, no real characters just some goofy traits, and annoying voice acting. Im kinda excited for whats coming tho. Korra taking on Kuvira (one of the best antagonists so far imo) is going to be awesome.

The way it worked in the episode kinda felt like kinda just stopped being an issue immediately is all. I dunno. I don't have a lot of introspection or analyzation on the episodes anyway so whatever's on the surface is basically all I'm getting out of it. I was just really expecting something different to resolving that is all. Like

Something kinda like that but just for her Avatar state stalker version of herself. She'd get the poison out and be feeling great and manage to actually fight someone and win again but then she'd see it again and realize that there's something else going on besides it just being poison and fear. I dunno. But I was expecting something totally different and I don't think that I really got what was going on anymore?

I'm glad that Korra's basically figured out that she needs to start thinking about WHY people want to change the world. I hope when she gets back to Republic City she's told "GO TAKE OUT KUVIRA" and she says "Not yet," but I doubt it. Kuvira has to take Zaofu after all.

Bizarrely I think Kuvira would be great if she were an unsubtle, evil character. It's pretty strange given that the best villain of the first season was by far the most nuanced, but if they are going with a non-spiritual antagonist I think it would be fun if she turned into a reactionary near-psychopath. It would be great for a political message, but I doubt that would fly with Nickelodeon.

And that is assuming there won't be any spirit bending shenanigans later on in the season.

Come to think of it, if Kuvira has a decent amount of metalbenders in her army then the Zaofu battle could be potentially be one of the best battle scenes in the avatar series. People just ripping off parts of the city and throwing sharp metal shards at each other willy-nilly. It'll probably just be average, and we certainly aren't going to get a Lord of the Rings style battle on Nickelodeon, but hopefully they can pull off some cool things, as there's a lot of potential coolness there. I'm sure we'll at least see Kuvira do cool metal things, so that's always fun.

I enjoyed this episode; it had a lot of the humor of the original series. If you didn't smile at that soldier's little "Nailed it" fist pump after he tossed the macaroon to Ikki you have no soul.

I assume that we are going to see the kids again in this season and it's not gonna be ALL KORRA ALL THE TIME. I think this episode is establishing how they have all grown up a bit and what that means for each of them because we will see Meelo and Ikki mature this season like we did with Jinora last season.

With Meelo they've established 1) the same obnoxious behavior as before won't fly as he gets older, 2) he's trying to establish his identity as a "man" and 3) he'll be a loving holy terror once he becomes a teenager.

With Ikki they've established that she's very naive. She spooks an animal and then chases after it for a stupid loving reason and when captured she inadvertently blabs their whole mission to those two soldiers.

As the season goes on I think we will see Ikki get a little more canny and Meelo will have some of his rough edges sanded down by his experiences.

Yeah, I think that most people mean Meelo. Ikki and Jinora were great.

Meelo, though, was weird. I mean, where did he get those obnoxious views? It's not like Tenzin socialised him into "be a MAN, put down your sisters". It felt like pushing a stereotype onto a character that can't really support it.

Spoilers for the preview! I like how Kuvira isn't JUST going to march in with an army and seize Zaofu. I don't know what her plan is with Bolin, but I like that she's smart enough to realize that 1. Non-violent means are often the best route, and 2. If it comes to violence, having an army right there with you instead of issuing threats and leaving to come back later is a good idea. Also Baatar Jr., what the hell, man. When your fascist wife is the one saying 'no, we need to do this peacefully,' you got problems.
