It's a little quieter than a normal size guitar, and the finish is a flat satin style finish. It sounds really nice, a lot brighter sounding than the other nylon string guitars I tried out before I decided on that one. I am not a classical guitar guy at all, I just bought one to have one to noodle around on basically. I like it a lot, and I don't really see the need to buy anything else in that vein.

Overall it's a great guitar IMO. I'd buy it again if I had to do it over. But I am not a mainly classical guy, so there might be something in it someone who is fully focused on that style might not like.

Veeeeeery interesting. I'll see if I can try one in person. The low volume sounds like it might be a Godin/La Patrie thing. Like I said, I liked everything about the Etude except for the sound - it was just too quiet. I suspect that it was too heavily built and braced for nylon strings, and it sounds like the Motif might have the same issue, but for a parlor sized guitar it's not really a big deal.

this wilkinson trem is really cool, i've never really hosed with non-locking trems before and it works for me just fine. I don't know whether i want to go tremol-no or trem stopper with it. tremol-no is probably more versatile but means spending money because idk what happened to the one i had. i am probably not going to spend like 100 bucks on a brass trem block though. graphtech saddles, however, are possible

I've got an ancient Boss TU-12 that smells like burning resistors whenever it's plugged in because I connected it to the wrong wall wart years ago. By the time I noticed (because of the smell) it was too hot to handle with my bare hands. Still works fine, and the smell reminds me every time I use the thing. Haven't repeated that particular fuckup since.

I've been getting back into guitar lately (used to play as a kid) thanks to Rocksmith 2014 of all things. I've been using a friend's old beaten up Squire, and I think it's time to get my own. A guitar shop nearby has got a sale on, and I can grab one of these Epiphone Les Paul 100's for about $260. I love the look and feel of this guitar so I think I'm going to buy it.

http://www.epiphone.com/Products/Les-Paul/Les-Paul-100.aspx

It seems to have generally positive reviews online as a good practice guitar. Does anyone here have one or have any other suggestions?

If you're going to get a cheap Les Paul, I'd do one of three things: save up a little more and get at least an Epi LP Standard Pro, get an Agile from rondomusic.com, or look at an ESP.

Honestly though, the best advice is to go to a local shop and pick up what you're considering buying and see if you even like the weight/neck/shape/etc, and if you can plug it in, even better. If you live near a medium sized metro area, don't sleep on craigslist or the used sections of local shops, either. You can find some real bargains there from time to time.

I wouldn't suggest craigslist unless you're very comfortable with your knowledge base on used guitars (like what is cosmetic damage versus serious damage) so you don't get ripped off.

If you can afford it, and if you like the look and feel of a specific guitar at the store and it plays well for you? Get it.

In _general_, the Agile advice is good, or an Xaviere, or a used LP.

I would not pay much for a low end Epiphone (I would especially avoid the sub $300 ones in general); you will most certainly want to upgrade from it later if you go that route. If you go Agile you get a carved top, excellent tuners, and really nice finish. More for the money, you just do not get a guitar that says Les Paul on the headstock.

$200 bought me.

If I had it to do over again I'd get an Agile over my Epiphone just for the graphite nut, because nothing pisses me off about any of my guitars more than the way the G string binds and then pings RIGHT at the point it'd be in tune on this thing.

Gonna try pencilling in some graphite to hopefully get it moving a bit freer, but UGH.

I am probably an anomaly. But I bought an Agile and don't much care for it. Turns out I am not a fan of the LP shape and they are heavy as hell. Mine is over 10 lbs, which doesn't sound heavy until you have it strapped over your shoulder for an hour. Bought a wide padded strap and that only marginally helped.

Its a nice guitar, but in the end, just not really for me. Trying to sell it, but not much action so far.

You are not an anamoly. I'm one of those, but there are alot of people who don't like LP's specifically because of the weight.

There are even all kinds of goofy sayings about this, like "they are a young man's guitar," and some crap i can't remember about your impdening back injury being cool.

edit- I like tele's and a legit dealbreaker for many is that it digs into your arm.

I know it's classic shape, but I'd really like it if someone would contour off that upper edge. Something that plays like a tele, but is comfy like a strat.

I would love a tele with strat comfort contours. Maybe some humbuckers. I know warmoth makes bodies like that, but I wouldn't want to building a guitar from scratch without knowing if I even like it.

Agiles can be kind of heavy but that is more of a Les Paul thing in general unless you get chambered ones or are lucky enough to own a less dense piece I guess. Really that is all the more reason people should go to guitar centers and try everything before you buy. You may not be able to try an Agile but if you do not like a high end Epi because of weight/feel, you probably will not want an AL either.

I like having the AL-2000 just to have a LP style guitar, I am totally in agreement with the weight bit for playing out. My new SGJ or Strat are a million times more comfortable and comparatively featherweight. My Tele and LP are more for fighting zombies off than playing through a gig.

I've been tempted to get an Agile, and there's a gold P90 one in a pawn shop right by my house so I know they're comfy, but... I have an LP clone already and I don't know if an Agile would be any better than a mid-80s Matsumoko. :negative:

A few months back I decided to go to a guitar shop and play just about every guitar that I had even a mild interest in just to see what type of guitars I liked. Oddly enough I tried LP style Epiphones and ESPs and enjoyed them. But as much as I want to like my Agile I just can't because of the weight. Messing around with a guitar for 10 minutes just isn't the same as owning it. In fact, I don't think I found a single guitar I didn't like.

I do admit I keep going back and forth on getting rid of it, just because it is quite different than my strat and is a classic guitar to own. I bought a Blacktop Jaguar HH as sort of a replacement for it. Haven't really figured out if I do or don't like it either. Guess I am not really happy with guitars that aren't strats. Nothing like your first guitar I guess :D

Maybe Agiles just aren't for you then, or you got a bum one. The mid to high end Epi LP's that I liked were not exactly light either, and they were really hit or miss with quality.

I am not trying to poo poo on Epiphone either, the Casino is really awesome and some of their LP's are quite nice when they have the upgraded pickups.

I can't remember the exact weight but I think mine is 9 lbs. It's a beast. There's nothing like having that big slab of wood to beat around. I never thought about Pine as a good guitar wood, even knowing Leo used it back in the day, but I like it a lot now. Resonates nicely acoustically and has a well balanced dry sound.

Can confirm that the Squier VM Teles are comparably weighty. My jazz bass is lighter.

Are you talking about the Custom Lite models?
I bought one of them brand-new in 1989, kept it for years and years and it went everywhere with me until it got ripped off during load out one night, still one of my favorite guitars, absolutely perfect in every way.

That's the bad thing about getting old, I was thrilled when they were reissued until I saw the price and still can't get it out of my head 'hell, I paid less than a grand for one of those bah damned kids get off'n my lawn!'.
