I played Helltower for the first time last night. WOW, that's so much more fun than this year's offering. It feels like it had the same amount of effort put into it as doomsday_event, but somehow it works so much better.

Helltower is sweet because so many of the changes actually address what's wrong with Hightower. Removing the backslide on the ramp helps make sure you actually reach a conclusion. The spells give some good options for busting sentries or heavymedic combos. The Witching Hour makes a metagame around gathering enough firepower to push up the final stretch (e.g. unless your team is just wildly outclassing the other, you usually need Monoculus cover to drive up the tower.) Most of the stuff added to Doomsday doesn't fix any of its problems, and the spell summon actually makes sentries even more of a problem. I felt like Harvest_Event and Helltower did a lot to rehabilitate those maps and add cool extra strategic dimensions. With Doomsday, I'm left wondering if Valve even understands what's wrong with the map.

Helltower would have been great if it dropped the arena section, or the tower part mattered in the slightest (also if they tweaked respawns because everyone is more lethal and looked at Sniper sight lines around some of the goofier high jump/teleport areas, but that's nitpicking). Then they took all the worst parts of that and made this year.

The respawn timer on the tickets does feel like it's shorter than on regular Doomsday, which is definitely an improvement. The underwater curse would also do a lot to fix the sentry problem since it lets you swim up and shoot down on sentries on the point, if it wasn't for the fact that the curse setup gives sentries a chance to mow down an entire team.

The last 3 scream fortress maps (viaduct_event, lakeside_event, Helltower) were amazing, mostly because hightower and KOTH maps in general are naturally good deathmatchy maps. Add in all the random bosses, Wheel mods, and player spells and you've got a fantastic map for casual goofing off. Sure, the maps get ruined by sentries too but they're not as annoying to deal with. I'd put this year's map on par with the Mann Manor map (items are another matter but I don't care about those). It's not the worst event ever IMO, but I think a lot of people were especially disappointed this year since it feels like a 'step back' from Helltower.

I don't like the new map because it pulls you away from playing the actual game too much. It feels like every other minute you're in a third-person melee only mode, and the rounds end very quickly sending you into the bumper car mode that lasts forever. It was a fun gimmick at first, but now I just play the other maps.

Replace the rocket with, say, the spire from Badlands. In fact, replace whole chunks of it with the spire from Badlands...what if there was a map that was just five copies of the spire from Badlands, arranged in a wagon wheel around a giant version of the spire from Badlands, and it's the Process gametype. Call it Badspires (Spireland is a little on the nose). Not even kidding I'd play the poo poo out of that.

I'm sure we all know this deep down, but I'm gonna state it clearly: the greatness of the spire is inexorably coupled with its context in Badlands. You can't take it out of its surrounding landscape, plop it down somewhere else, and expect it to be even half as fun. It needs that balcony nearby, which needs the general structure of the base feeding into it. You can't understate the importance of its position relative to the choke point, or the bridge which is flanked by the other route, or the yard (which is where great scout deathmatches live), or the ramp. (I'm sure I'm getting the unofficial-official names of some of these locations wrong, but you know what I mean.)

drat that's 3 times now that joining helltower mid-hell has caused any gifts to either not spawn or if they do spawn they have nothing inside. You can't see if the map is on hell before joining a team and you can't spawn after you've joined one
