Engineer Buidlings/Airblast ugh. the skill floor is really low though b/c you can be decent at the game without a lot of investment or technical play which is what casual implies dude you can get into it 'casually' and do well also I havent seen a lot of people focusing on melee weapons except demomen with their giant swords and screaming which I cant really hate on b/c it looks rad as gently caress and its fun to airblast them away as a pyro maybe you just need a more tightly balanced and competitively-focused fps to play like quake or something, dude

Well all other FPSs are garbage hence the thread title. The best thing TF2 did was get rid of assault rifles and focus on burst damage. No other FPS does that. Quake is pretty close and well balanced (I assume) but is a totally different game.

I miss 2142 a lot. I've said since bf3 came out, that they should have a 2142 mode. I would kill to be able to drop pod people again and ride in that Goliath mech.

Quake, star craft and one of the street fighters or tekkens are the only top tier multiplayer games. And Battlefield... lmfao... No. It's maybe a mid tier one at it's best.

I liked Halo 1. It's getting rereleased on the XBOX ONE, so can we count that as a good modern FPS?

Fear Combat is badass, it was one of the first PC FPSes I ever played and I had a piece of poo poo I had to run Pixel Doubling at the lowest resolution so the game was these gigantic pixels on my screen and when I shot someone with the shotgun they blew up into a mist of dark red and it looked like PS1 MGS or something.

Mirror's edge was pretty cool. Is there any new stuff like that

There's Mirror's Edge 2 coming out at some point. I liked Deadcore which is another first person platformer, and Spire will probably be great when it comes out in a couple of years. I actually started a playthrough of Mirror's Edge earlier today, and it doesn't hold up as well as I thought. The chase sequences are still great, although there's not much tension since as long as you keep running, nothing will hit you. I feel Dustforce did the whole "navigate the environment with style" thing a lot better. It's also incredibly short and the guy who thought Hard should be locked until you complete the game once is an idiot.

I loved Mirror's Edge when I played it, and I kind of agree with your comments on it, but I think it's more that it doesn't hold up well to repeat play throughs more than not holding up as a game overall. Once you know the route for each segment and where things appear, there's not really much to it other than trying to speed run. It's the first play through, where you don't know those things and are in a panic, where the game really shines. Especially without runner vision, which was still pretty subtle even when active. It also helps that it had excellent art direction, music, and level design. The giant sewer levels and storm drains were particularly striking. Dustforce or other 2d platformers may do stylish navigation better, but they're also fundamentally different games. The shift to first person does a lot for generating immersion, and I think they handled the usual problems with first person platforming pretty well.

True, but I haven't played it in several years and remembered almost nothing about the layouts of the levels. I also disabled runner vision and am not using the command that points you to your next objective, but still had no problem finding the way through the level. It actually feels very linear now that I think about it. The game does have great art direction and music, and I'm enjoying how so far, I've been able to run past the "forced" encounters.

The thing I hated most about Mirror's Edge is how they made it really obvious with colors etc where you were supposed to go, but then in some spots they just didn't do that and it always, without fail, threw me the hell off and I got lost as poo poo in a tiny hallway or something trying to jump across a chasm or w.e when you were supposed to jump into a vent.
