It's lackluster compared to Order of Ecclesia but you can just take it as a classicvania game and it's pretty good, especially since unlocking it means you can level cap 1 or level cap 50 hard mode.

OoE is pretty good, but drat you guys are way too in love with it in this thread. It's like the 3rd best portable Castlevania (after Aria and Dawn). The gameplay really is pretty great, but the level design before the castle is insanely bland and Glyphs are just souls with a new name. There's way too much time spent running around and doing fetch quests in those bland non-castle areas too.

Heh. Aria is arguably better, but Dawn was seriously mediocre. That makes Ecclesia second-best.

Dawn has those dumb touchscreen gimmicks, which OoE was thankfully free of. Also, glyphs are like 10 times better than souls in Dawn because at the very least you only have to get a glyph drop ONCE.

Aria has too much filler, IMO. The first interesting boss fight where you can actually die - Death - doesn't come until you're almost half-way through the castle.

I'm not very far with it yet but Ecclesia seems much closer to the classic spirit by punishing you for being dumb right from the start. Had to restart the 'giant skeleton guy in prison' fight a few times, the crab took a few tries as well.

I can see why people prefer Aria, though. It's an upgrade from SotN in every way but visuals and music.

It's really a matter of opinion there. While I agree the copy/paste hits the two mountain areas pretty hard it's otherwise not something I noticed very much.

The Giant's Skeleton is a boss thatI used to have trouble with until I got a better grip of Magnes (which is awesome and should've been used more places), Brachyura is just a pain through and through because you don't have anything good against it and some of it's attacks are a pain to avoid. Albus mode is pretty cathartic for that one though. :v:

Other than the touch screen gimmicks and the anime art style (Which I didn't hate; I mean it's better than what Judgement did. But it's not as good as the rest of the series' art direction) I can't think of anything I really liked less about Dawn compared to Aria.

Yeah, I don't mean to diss Aria, Dawn, or even Portrait. I just love the feel of Ecclesia most- it feels like a perfect amalgamation of classic Castlevania and RPG Castlevania, which is something the Level 1 mode really hits home. I love every single metroidvania, and I can't stress that enough, but I just have to give Ecclesia my gold trophy. v:shobon:v

The most notable thing about Lament of Innocence is that it came out two years before God of War yet every 3D Castlevania since is "like God of War." They really do reuse some of those rooms way too much even if I do like the game overall. The rectangular nature of each room made me wonder if they were going to have the camera be a sideview and make it a more 2D game but then halfway through just made everything wider to make it 3D.

Really? I never felt like Dawn of Sorrow was anything but an enjoyable rehash. Circle of the Moon is my favorite of the portable ones; I've never finished OoE but I do agree with you on the beginning. I'm ready for the drat castle.

Castlevania Megathread: Every game is the worst best game in the series

Discendo Vox
Mar 21, 2013

This does not make sense when, again, aggregate indicia also indicate improvements. The belief that things are worse is false. It remains false.
A large factor determining which of the portable/2D modern games is how much complexity you prefer in the combat system, and how extensive the RPG systems can be before they start interfering with core gameplay. For me, LoI struck the right balance in 3D, CotM/AoS struck a similar balance in 2D- but this may be a product of being introduced to the series with SCIV.

As multiple weapons, element systems, crafting and sidequests became more extensive, they interfered with my enjoyment of the core combat experience.

Judgement was greenlit with the purpose of fulfilling a bunch of internal and external requests (fans had been asking for a Wii game, Konami wanted to put out a fighting game, IGA was still trying to attract new/younger players) but none of that stuff really works in tandem - CV fans didn't want a fighting game, FG fans didn't want to play a FG on Wii, and I don't even think Death Note fans liked the new character designs.

I still think that it could have been successful if they'd just made a 2D game in the style of an Arcsys game, even with those ridiculous new character designs.

All this talk of Judgment just reminds me of how horribly sore my arm was. I played that poo poo with a Wiimote and it was mindumbingly painful.
I know no one cares about singleplayer in a fighting game, but the true final boss was an absolute nightmare, mostly because it completely clashed with everything else. Probably because it was literally a palette swap of Death from Curse of Darkness with different attacks. It's just an absolute chore to get through and has to be seen in its bullshit at least once.
Sweet music though.
Also exploring related videos led to this gem of absolute stupidity(probably best watched at 2xspeed). Man some of that dialogue is stilted.

Somehow Michiru Yamane and Akira Yamaoka were brought to a game music festival in Monterrey, Mexico, so I had to go to that concert. She played for about an hour, and they were supposed to play together at the end, but sound engineers botched it, so we ended up with Dracula's Castle from SotN with no guitars.

Her set starts at around 2:27:00 and was pretty awesome.
