Automatic transmissions can roll back too but they don't test two-foot starts. It's just supporting driver incompetence, you should be able to hold your vehicle on a hill with a bit of clutch slipping. A vehicle too underpowered to do that is probably dangerously slow.

It also didn't help that those are the sorts of people who will lean on the horn the second you stall it. Also keep in mind that not all cars have handbrakes that are conducive to that method. For example, my old tacoma required the correct combination of squeezing/twisting/pulling a T shaped handle out of the dash in a way that was quite awkward to do while working pedals and holding onto the wheel. TL;DR you can't expect everyone to be an expert and trusting someone not to roll back is about as smart as taking it on faith that someone to do what their turn signal is announcing. Oh parking brakes on Tacoma's. Trying to use it to manage a hill start would be more dangerous than rolling back 2-3 inches. Also, yes, those of us in the mortal realm have bad days and sometimes roll back a little more than normal, or stall. When I was driving stick, either event was fairly rare, but it happened. More often was driving on icy/slippery roads and you slide back an inch or two before the tires bite and you start moving. Keep 2-3 feet back, or at least enough that anything other than horrible driving skills won't get you smacked.

I need a bumper sticker announcing that my engine has so much power that dumping the clutch at idle won't stall the engine even at a 170 degree incline. Also who drives a car that down't have a brake line lock?

Only a little, I heel-toe so I can set the throttle and ease off the brakes as I let the clutch out. So there's a little extra slipping but I consider it reasonable wear. I never even considered using the hand brake until I read about it on this forum. I was taught the way I do it and it always worked fine. I'd still probably poo poo myself if I tried to drive a manual in Seattle or San Francisco.

I think you're misunderstanding the purpose of that design - they're explicitly trying to make you not make a left turn out of that lot, and I'd wager there's a "NO LEFT TURNS" sign for traffic leaving the parking lot.

The problem is is that people constantly roll right up onto you on the hills, so its a dance between the clutch and gas, and holding the e brake down on the more steeper hills. Add to the fact that the roads are wet, so tires can slip more easily. I know some people who intentionally roll their cars back a tad at the beginning of a hill. Usually the person behind sees the car roll back and they give you a little more space.

I do this all the time here, we have some pretty steep grades and people love to get right up your rear end in the tiny crowded downtown streets. A tiny roll (like a few cm, just enough to be seen) after coming to a stop on the real bad hills *usually* results in people giving more than an inch off my bumper. Then again these hills are steep enough that my girlfriend's auto rolls a bit too when you let off the brakes.

There is indeed a normal intersection with a light about a thousand feet north of that driveway; like IOwnCalculus said, that particular entrance is explicitly designed to prohibit left turns from the mall property, and making a left as indicated in that picture would technically be illegal. While there doesn't appear to be a "No Left Turn" sign for the exit, there is a "No Right Turn" sign for southbound traffic at that median break that would also prohibit U-turns, which is technically what that maneuver would be (and from the rightmost lane, to boot). It's also pretty funny that they had to build a traffic signal at that intersection (complete with those awesome eternal green lights for northbound traffic) presumably because idiots were blocking traffic and/or getting themselves splattered by southbound vehicles at the old uncontrolled intersection while trying to turn left into that driveway, instead of driving a little further and using the dedicated turn lane with a protected left at the light.

That's like the exit from my parents' church. Actually worse because I see you are cutting across northbound traffic turning left in the mall. They used to have a "No Left Turn" sign, but took it down. I still make lefts there as cross traffic is never too bad and it's better than navigating that lovely lot after church lets out, especially if it's been snowing or raining and people start ignoring the painted lines.

AncientTV posted:This one's even worse. I've personally witnessed three accidents and dozens of near misses here: That's loving terrible. The median(s) just serves to make the intersection more confusing. The way this is set up, a left from the strip mall puts you through four lanes of eastbound traffic before you make it to your westbound lane. (Which is a dedicated thru lane no less.) Good luck if you want to make it straight across to Bartram. It's like somebody played Frogger and thought the point was to murder the frog... Why wouldn't they just do a middle lane with yellow outer solid/inner dashed lines? It would at least give you the opportunity to travel through one direction of traffic and wait for a spot to open up in the other. Oh I know why. Merging doesn't matter when you're Twittering your FourSquare to Pintrest. We'd manage to

This area expanded really quickly over the last decade or so, and it seems instead of intelligently redesigning the major intersections, the planners just kept piling poo poo on the old roads. What's worse is that it's a rich-ish area, so you've got these intersections swarming with high schoolers in brodozers and daddy's BMW.

Seems like if someone unfamiliar with the area is driving around looking for a parking spot they will assume that everyone has a 4 way because the last however many intersections had them and do a standard California stop when they see you coming.
