Massive chalice early access seems kinda cool. It's got that interesting double fine uniqueness going on - like, there's nothing else like it, that I've played at least. I guess it's a cross between xcom and crusader kings 2: you've got squad based combat (which is pretty brutal, but maybe a little boring at this stage) and then you've got empire/dynasty management - you have to take soldiers out of active combat to get them into the breeding pool, where they eventually have kids and pass on their traits *and* their experience. This means there's a conflict about when to retire a soldier - push for the next level and risk death (1 in 5 don't make it back so this is a real risk), or just settle for breeding shittier kids?
Combat is a lot less fun than xcom, but the dynasty management is cool.
Bear in mind that it's EA so there's a bunch of balance/polish to come. Worth keeping an eye on.

Sounds cool but I'm going to wait until DF actually finish the fecking thing (with everything they promised) before buying in.

I just played for a little bit and I more or less agree. The combat could still use some work, it still feels a bit too simple at this stage (for reference, there's less going on overall than something like XCOM or even Expeditions: Conquistador), but I'm quite liking the dynastic macro level to the game. I'm not sure if the combat opens up a bit more later on, though.

It's Double Fine though. Really interesting premises for games, but frequently failing in the follow through of actually making a whole game around them, sadly.

There's easily a whole game within Massive Chalice currently, but the combat needs a lot of tweaking before I'll want to play through it all.

Yeah, I think you're right. There's a bunch of potential, but the combat is just... not really fun. It's not bad, but it's not good either. I'll be keeping an eye on their updates.

You're a fucking cocksucker, Jonathan
I'm having a problem with Steam and I have no idea what it is. I've just gotten a new hard drive today, installed Windows 7, all my drivers, etc.

The problem is that at some point, steam will go offline with the "No connection" message in the download status bar at the bottom. (This will also happen when I try to install a game) I can restart Steam, but it will refuse to connect. The only way I can get it to reconnect is to restart Windows. Interestingly, I have the same problem in the Blizzard launcher.

Any idea on how to fix this? I have exceptions in Windows firewall, and have even tried switching it off but nothing seems to help. The fact that it is happening with the Blizzard launcher says it's likely something external, maybe ports or something, but my router is the same as it always was.

I'm totally stumped. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: And now I'm noticing that websites in my web browser are taking longer than they should to load...
