My favorite thing about lame fanservice games is finding that one dude that defends his favorite to death and gushes about it's systems without realizing they're either really crap and convoluted or the kind of poo poo RPGs left behind 2 generations ago.

Endorph posted:honestly the fanservice isnt even that bad. like its there and its dumb but it's not the worst about that Pretty much this, I beat Zero because... well I will see that poo poo to the loving end, and Zero contains basically Game 1 in Digest form (All the plot events, none of the random battles, good end only.) and it was just... I can't imagine doing that without all the grinding and extra poo poo cut out. Part 3 though did feature a legitimately likable protagonist, not that any of them are particularly 'bad' it's just that most of them are bland as hell. Now the fact that the games combat system is just... you know what? http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/kusoge/kusoge01.htm It's all summed up there but as a teaser quote:Firstly, let's get one thing straight: Agarest has little to do with salacious imagery. Most places are eager to show the game's scantily clad women, but these scenes are so rare, and in some cases so difficult to achieve, that you might as well assume they don't exist. Secondly, after showcasing the non-existent porn, most places are likely to talk about the game's brutally difficult strategy battles. Except, while they do technically exist, most of your time will be spent unravelling the feverish nightmare that is the guild system. In reality Agarest is all about administration.

Agarest 1 is worse in this regard because it's loving TIMED. the PC release at least made it so you could grind out in the dungeons but good loving god the game is ridiculously cruel and is DLC hell.

I don't know how you guys can talk about tactical CRPG's and not mention Banner Saga. It's not nearly as deep gameplay-wise as FFT or Tactics Ogre (or even Front Mission) but it's beautifully presented and has a cool non-linear story.

Like you know how most optional bosses boil down too a test of endurance once you learn to not get insta-gibbed? You just have to patiently follow a pattern, whittle down their HP and win? In Agarest 2, EVERY loving BOSS is that sort of boss. Speaking of that LP, since Goons Are Assholes, and Idiot Fuckers can't do game design to save their life, the thread selected that the MC should be punching and gun based. The best weapon in the game, weldable only by the MC's lineage is a Greatsword. The game had some good moments and fun characters, but the hoops it makes people jump through is ridiculous. When Ar Tonelico is better than your game in pretty much every way, while being less skeevy to boot...well I guess you work at IF. Goondolences. TARDISman posted:
