Literature is not exhaustible, for the sufficient and simple reason that no single book is. A book is not an isolated being: it is a relationship, an axis of innumerable relationships.

Got a water flosser for my wife, who has third world dental issues and this will allow us to avoid about $20,000 worth of orthodontics for a while longer.

And I grabbed a few things for myself at the same time:

The Quantum Thief, comes highly recommended. Rajaniemi is apparently one of those out-of-nowehere SF talents that is just blowing everybody away.

Lingua Tertii Imperii by Victor Klemperer, who is better known for his "I Will Bear Witness" diaries about WW2. This is sort of a nonfiction version of Orwell's 1984; I read a bit of it when I was working for the Germanic Studies department of a university and never got around to finishing it.

And some touchscreen gloves from Timberland because Jesus Christ what the gently caress just happened to the weather.

Since official prints cost a fortune, I ordered a custom print. I had to make it small, since the source photo isn't high res.

Its roughly 10"x24", with a few inches of matting. If it comes out looking okay, i'll post a pic and give you the details.

Those are counterfeit and likely garbage in terms of product quality. You could find a much better jacket for $200 than a Canada Goose ripoff.

I took the highest res photo I could find to use as a source image, which was this one (1600x653):

http://i.imgur.com/RznllTw.jpg

Then I made a poster print on Staples website:

http://www.staples.com/sbd/content/copyandprint/posters.html

I chose the medium size 18x24". The uncropped image's actual size is about 10"x24". Mine was printed semi gloss. I had a look at the print and quality wise its fine, I could have maybe gotten away with making it 20-30% larger, but the size between Staples medium and large is too big. If they offered custom sizes, then I could have gone larger, but custom sizes are pricey.

This print size is good for smaller rooms, bedroom, office, hall, kitchen, bathroom. You'd definitely want a higher res image to make a print large enough to be suitable as a living room piece.

Now it's in the process of being framed at a local framing place. The matting and frame thickness will make the final product larger.

I picked Staples because their price made it a small gamble, they were fast, and offered store pickup close to where I live. I'm satisfied with how it came out.

I got mine from a guy who specializes in leather belts at a local swap meet. The finishing isn't as consistent as belts from a retail source, but his prices are awesome.

Those Orion belts look pretty identical. People seem pretty happy with them.

Oh man the whole point of a Gursky print is the large format and fine details. You miss out printing from such a low-res source.

True, but those large prints are unobtainable, and i'm hanging it in front of my desk where it will be viewed close up.

It's still going to look great and fill the empty space nicely.

Maybe someone can use their tech savvy and find a high rez scan that could yield a larger print.

Seeing some original Gursky prints in person must be a glorious thing.

His lithographs are a lot more "obtainable" than one would think, but are definitely not something you'd pick up unless you have some serious disposable income or are serious about collecting.

A 168x405mm, signed, edition of 30 of Montparnasse can be had for around $5,000-$10,000.
http://www.christies.com/lotfinder/photographs/andreas-gursky-montparnasse-porticus-frankfurt-1995-5111077-details.aspx

I picked up my print of Mercedes (Rastatt) 1993 back in 2006 for only $1200.

The original diasec c-prints are definitely worth checking out if you ever have a chance. A client of mine in Chicago has one of my favorites (Copan, Sau Paulo, 2002) hanging in their lobby across from a Jeff Wall lightbox and it takes up most of the wall.

Got my Christmas shopping sorted out early. The nice thing about living in Switzerland is not having to really think of what to get people - all they want is Swiss chocolate and/or coffee.

Ordered 4 of these from Sprungli (to be picked up at the airport before I go home), and a few smaller boxes for siblings/etc. Also got a few little bags of Blue Mountain coffee beans from a local coffee place. It is nice to get all those gifts out of the way, but I can't stop staring at my bank account realizing I just spent a little over 500 dollars on chocolate/coffee.
