It may be slightly overstated in some cases, but I do know that a company specialising in cryotreatment over here got a lot of their initial automotive business from GTi-R owners trying to make their gearboxes survive longer.

I have toyed with getting one before, as I think the prices are about as low as they'll get now, and going back up. What I actually wish they'd built was a P11 Primera using that drivetrain, without any ostentatious bodkits to reveal the fact. Would have made for a very good do-everything sleeper car.

Then the gearbox blows up. Then you spend ten grand to make it faster and it's still lame compared to a WRX or evo. They're interesting but nowhere near as cool as the specs imply. What you really want is a pulsar GTiR:

AWD that doesn't blow up coupled to an SR20DET.

Unsurprisingly, there are no pictures of unmolested ones on the net. But I can assure you that everything in the pic is factory besides the wheels.

Beat me to it. Yeah I'm a Mazda fanboy, but the pulsar GTiR was the small hatch to get. I say was, because if you can't import the already, the kiwis and aussies had the run on them long ago (more so the kiwis who can import anything). I really wanted one, but that was over 10 years ago. They don't age well.

And the only reason they age badly is because of retards. Also, you could get an AWD primera with an SR20; the swap would be fairly trivial.

Slight correction there - imports now have to comply with emissions and frontal impact standards which makes things more difficult. There are still some exceptions but its no longer a free for all.

That is not a list of cars banned in the U.S. It is a list of cars deemed ineligible to be imported under the show and display laws. If you were to modify those vehicles to be compliant with NHTSA safety laws they would be eligible for importation for use as a road car.

This was fun to watch live. It's funny that fans of each series will poo poo on the other endlessly, but drivers of each get giddy like schoolgirls if they get to drive the other cars. Each series is amazing in its own right. With F1 it's easy to see the technology, NASCAR's might not be as advanced as an F1 car but when you know what you're looking at and see what they do with the rules provided, it's just as mind blowing.

Thing about that is they typically have to be crash tested in order to determine what the necessary modifications are. That's fine for mass-produced models that were just never sold here, but it would be cost-prohibitive for something like the 959.

There's also other issues with importing cars in general. See: Motorex.

Yes and I neglected to mention they also need to be in compliance with EPA laws too. My point is, that is not a list of banned cars. It is a list of cars that were not deemed exceptionally technologically or historically significant enough to be imported without modification under the "Show and Display" laws. They still could be imported by the regular means (which are really not worth it mostly).

You probably could if you could get Toyota to write a letter it would crash test similarly and you get the motor EPA approved.
