Trip Report: I wiped Linux off my PC entirely and installed windows 8 about a month ago. In this month I learned that picking an OS for ideological reasons and masochistically using it is a really hosed up thing to do. Seriously, I want to work on my own projects, bullshit with people online, or play games. I don't want to spend time writing patches for other people's poo poo so I can work on my project or play a game. The future of Linux on the desktop is chromeOS.

gnome 3.14 finally in gnome-overlay things are much smoother now chromium a tiny bit more useful on hidpi, but not quite there yet i dont like the new gedit much though. if you turn on line numbers, things just becomes a jumbled mess of numbers and text install gentoo

my stepdads beer posted:get fedora 21 op anaconda is poo poo, selinux is poo poo, firewalld is poo poo i use arch at the moment, it provides a package manager and otherwise stays the gently caress out of my way. rolling releases > big periodic releases because the latter fucks up more poo poo simultaneously and i have better things to do than reinstall my os every six months. we'll see how many broken pacman updates i have to endure in a few months, then i'll decide whether it was worth it or not.

anaconda is poo poo agreed. those other things don't bother me at all on a desktop. i configured firewalld on a centos7 vm the other day and it seemed good though.

i never understood the purpose of a "firewall" on a machine that isn't a router. how hard is it to not listen on a bunch of ports for no good reason? if you need to share media on your LAN then you probably shouldn't blindly trust every machine on that LAN either, let alone connections coming in from outside your current network segment.

idgi are you agreeing with me or disagreeing with me because a local "firewall" is basically what you describe: running your poo poo in a completely insecure setup and hoping that the firewall will catch everything

coworker who sits next to me is going some hardware eval and the tools run best on Linux, so I get to see him booted into 80x25 scaled to a 30" monitor cursing under his breath for a couple of hours a day. on the other hand, I have to Linux-care about making something work that digs around in the graphics stack and naively expects things to work in all the driver configurations, while hitting 90Hz sustained. I'm flashing back to editing modelines.
