As expected, the European Parliament has passed a resolution that calls on the European Commission to consider a break-up of Google as a potential solution to its dominance in the European search market.

Google is currently embroiled in a long-running antitrust case with the European Commission over the way it uses its search dominance – it has more than 90 percent of the European market — to push its own services (among other things). The Commission is also looking into complaints about Google’s bundling of its services with Android.

The resolution was passed on Thursday by 384 votes to 174, with 56 abstentions, urging the Commission to consider “unbundling” Google’s search business from its other interests. The Commission does have the power to force a company’s break-up (the European Parliament cannot itself initiate any such plan) but has never before done so. Nor has the European Parliament ever urged such a move in this way.

For a vote that didn’t decide much in concrete terms, it was certainly preceded by furious lobbying and plenty of behind-the-scenes mudslinging.

In the days leading up to the vote, the New York Times revealed that Andreas Schwab, the German conservative who initiated the Google break-up proposal, provides competition policy expertise to a German law firm whose parent company has done work for publishers that are involved in the antitrust case against the company.

Then, after some U.S. congresspeople and senators wrote to the European Parliament chief to decry the draft resolution, it emerged that three out of the four signatories have received campaign funding from Google.

lol, of course the liberals opposed this vote

(both the conservatives and socialists voted in favour :ussr:)

mailbox has always had push for gmail, but that's because you give mailbox direct access to your gmail account and they run push themselves

i think apple just doesn't want to bother setting up the infrastructure to do that because it's really not their problem.

Gmail can have push just like yahoo mail does. the only reason they don't is because Google hasn't enabled it.

they probably have their own "googley" implementation of it because some self-important nerdlinger google rear end in a top hat said he wanted to disrupt email on gmail for millions of people

apple runs the iOS push servers. if you write an app, you can push from your server to your app by communicating with this server.

if you want to push to the iOS mail client, you can do one of two things. either set up a push agreement with apple (which they will only do with large providers). yahoo, outlook.com, and aol do this. or you can run an exchange server that can do this via Microsoft's agreement with apple. Google has chosen to do neither for Gmail for unknown reasons.

its probably just a juvenile jab at apple for having better products so google artificially lowers the qualityof mail.app by disabling push on one of the most popular email services. my theory anyway

oh, hey, the dovecot plugin is here: http://www.opensource.apple.com/source/dovecot/dovecot-239.8/dovecot/src/imap/cmd-x-apple-push-service.c
and the other end of that Unix domain socket is here: http://www.opensource.apple.com/source/dovecot/dovecot-239/dovecot.push-notify/daemon/push_notify.m
and I don't see any kind of authentication between the IMAP server and Apple at all.

yeah they (i think) did their own implementation of exchange, i still have it on my iphone 4. they stopped registering devices for it in early 2013 iirc because my old iphone 5 had it (i got in jan 2013 and was surprised that it worked). a replacement one i got a few months ago doesn't even though it use the same exact backup. i am displeased with goofle
