For a while Earworm had a thing for USOP 2009 that was all the lyrics and what songs they came from. It was on his site, but it seems to be gone now :[

What were peoples first mash-ups that they got into? I have to admit the Linkin Park/Jay-Z mash-up album was my first intro the the idea. Then I found the Grey Album by DJ Dangermouse and it was all over.

For me it was 2ManyDJs' As Heard On Radio Soulwax Pt 2 which I heard in a Tokyo cafe in 2003. Since I didn't speak the language, I had to use wild gesticulations and sign language to ask the waitress what the name of the album was.

2ManyDJs didn't invent mashups, but that album really kicked off its popularity. Up until that point I had dismissed Beyonce and Christina Aguilera as crappy pop music, but hearing the singing with "better" backing music was a revelation:

Collision Course was my first exposure, as I think it was for a lot of people. I'm not embarrassed at all, there is some good stuff on that album.

Then the first United State of Pop.

Then Im sure there were some other things after that. I was still in college and wasn't really paying attention to music. But as soon as I moved to the SF bay area, it all came flooding at me. Hard to remember the first big thing I heard there, but the one that sticks in my mind is:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLC8ndUbMKI

I'm sure there were many before that.

I really characterize things as Before Bootie or After Bootie. The BB stuff has got to be mostly collision course and earworm. AB is a deluge of amazingness.

Yeah Im pretty sure the first time I heard that Strokes vs Christina mashup was when Smash Up Derby played it.

what?
My first few were all off of KaZaA, random mashups that would come up when searching for one of the artists and such. I think the first one I downloaded was Britney Spears vs. Marilyn Manson or something stupid like that. I downloaded a few more but only really for amusement over absurd combinations, never anything that was actually really enjoyable to listen to. A lot of them were really lazy too, just overlaying the full tracks.

Then I liked Collision Course, but wasn't aware it was just one of the few well publicized examples (at the time) of a larger thing and never went looking. A year or so later I see a post on Digg or Slashdot or something about American Edit, download it, and the rest is history. At this point of the last 10 albums I've listened to end-to-end 7 or 8 have been mashup albums.

Trademark is def my favorite mashup artist currently. I guess the main difference between him and say, Earworm, is he keeps the beat the same over the entire track.

I like the second half, which actually sounds like a fun dance song. The first half is too slow for my taste, which also describes most of Earmworm's this year. In a way I'm really impressed by how difficult it's got to be for Earworm to tie both hands behind his back by forcing himself both to make semi-coherent lyrical sentences and to follow a strict song list. With this year's musical tempo I'm less enjoying it musically and more "well that's nice technically but kind of boring". Trademark is new to me but it's a fun dance song throughout.

Earworm seems to pick one song each year to base the whole thing around and for the past several years those just haven't been as catchy as back around 2009. This year Isosine and Trademark went with Boom Clap and Avici which were catchier choices to put stuff over.

Looking forward to Dantology though I just listened to 2013 and it feels a lot more jumbled than I remember thinking it was last year.

If it explains any of my mashup taste, I got into this late with Feed The Animals and went nuts for a few years listening to almost entirely mashup during the wave that followed.

I wish Ludachrist would release a new mash-up, but I'm pretty sure they're no longer. It looks like The White Panda has released a few individual tracks, but nothing major.

Edit: although, posting this did lead me to Bearly Legal, the latest album from The White Panda, which I'm enjoying so far. The last thing I had from them was Bam Boo Yah

This one kicks the poo poo out of all of the other ones, that's for sure. It's the only one where All About That Bass doesn't sound awkward and tacked on, and getting Let It Go in there at the end was just like showing off.

I'm going to disagree and say I don't really like this year's Dantology. He's got a bunch of parts that's layering vocals over vocals that just become unintelligible and it's nails on a chalkboard to me. There's a few nice moments but overall the vocals-on-vocals ones ruin it for me.

Same, that mix is incredible and is the definitive version of most of the tracks inside as far as my musical memory is concerned.
