I would say Slayer's a good starter band if you're looking to get into metal.

"Black metal" and "death metal" meant something very different in 1985 than they do these days. Regardless of what they were referred to as, a lot of extreme thrash, darker heavy and speed metal, and generally any metal which deviated into dark themes was really quite different in the mid-80s. While the styles became fully formed and entirely deviant by the mid-90s, it's understandable why bands like Slayer and Venom are sometimes referred to as death and black metal. Hell Awaits and Black Metal were huge steps in the transformations of those styles. But hey, even killer heavy/speed metal from 1984 drops the phrase "black metal" and Running Wild loving rules. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9G1OKn3aCHg In short, listen to "Gates to Purgatory" and "Hell Awaits" and scream louder.

So I'm normally not big on prog metal, but Haken's album The Mountain has totally blown me away today. Cockroach King and Pareidolia in particular stand out for me, but truthfully this is the first time in awhile where I enjoyed just sitting and soaking in an entire album from start to finish. Where do I go with prog metal from here? I've listened to almost nothing like this before so I'm open to any albums presenting a similar sound. I probably should expand my progressive death metal explorations beyond just Opeth, too, I guess. No idea where to start there either.

Yes. This band owns and they have a fair degree of variety between their albums too, which is cool. Also, if you don't mind something more in the Sikth/Protest the Hero vein, Destrage released a pretty enjoyable album this year. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4TO-LqP_Cs

^That Disillusion album is absolutely fantastic. Never been able to get into their other records though. Not prog, but a friend of mine turned me onto this album today, and I'm hooked. https://seprevation.bandcamp.com/ Pro click if you like old school death/thrash.

Also obligatory prog death albums IMO: Atheist - Unquestionable Presence Supuration - The Cube Timeghoul - Full discography Martyr - Feeding the Abscess Lykathea Aflame - Elvenefris And Stargazer and Mitochondrion, if they count - I'd consider Parasignosis prog metal in the sense that it's heavily DSO-influenced, at least. And if someone is an Opeth fan, they owe it to themselves to listen to the first Ne Obliviscaris album. Gamma Nerd fucked around with this message at 21:39 on Dec 9, 2014 |

Just how bad is In Flames now? I live in a fantasy world where their latest album was Colony. And it's mediocre at best. The Jester Race is where it's at. Whoracle too. I haven't heard anything newer, but I will, Monday night, when I see them in Atlanta at the Opeth show. Will it make me sad and angry if I pay attention to the In Flames set?
