If you scrolled halfway up the last page you can see it's separate from the upcoming Christmas update. Also whatever the map was supposed to be for OTL it's probably better than egypt so it should have come with it

I'd much, much rather have new maps than new weapons at this point, and I hope the beta maps stuff going on at the moment is a permanent fixture and they don't just drop it after cactus canyon and asteroid are finished.

I really, really liked that thing they did last year, rebalancing a bunch of underused or obnoxious weapons instead of adding new stuff. I hope they do that again this year.

We were banking on Valve accepting the map (we were being lead to believe that this was the case up until a few weeks ago), which would remove the issues with filesize and stuff. So, yea. With all the necessary models, we can't really reduce the size too much. http://forums.tf2maps.net/showthread.php?t=23104&page=10 So it went from possible yes to nope, as well as them starting the EOTL crate droppings which was a defacto "BZZZZZZZZZZ TIMES UP". Either they really wanted a pre-christmas update and forced the update out before it was ready or some sort of poo poo went down.

I'd be more sympathetic to the thread if I didn't know there would be an equal amount of bitching if Valve had actually added or changed stuff.

Well, I kinda like the Demoman pants, and the Pyro's wooly stuff gave me a chuckle. But I think this is the first update where there isn't a single cosmetic item I want. We've got enough reskin melee weapons as it is, too. Still a new pyro taunt that doesn't involve the balloonicorn, sign me up for that. That looks like the sittin' pyro taunt animation we saw way back when too. If the duck unusual thing were true I'd be tempted by that, but I've gotten bored of TF2 recently anyway. A rubberducky krones dome would be sweet, but I think I'll pass on spending any more money on this game this year. Unless something amazing happens in the next few weeks.

Anyone who thinks a speed pad (presuming this is a thing you step on for a temporary speed boost) is a good idea didn't main Scout for that Merasmus bullshit. Whee, I hit the speed cap for minimal gains while my dramatically improved opponents can pretty much erase my one advantage!

Finally got the time to watch EotL this morning and the movie is great, especially for a pretty small community team! Shame that the rest of the update seems to be a bit lacklustre, the soldier coat not making it into the actual game sucks too. I haven't played the latest few versions of Snowplow so my thoughts on it may be a bit outdated but its whole gimmick seemed kind of forced, like it would have played better reworked to be a standard A/D or payload map. Sucks that Valve seemed to drop its inclusion at the last minute though, for the mappers who had spent ages working on it if no one else. Anyway, I hope the actual Valve Christmas update is still of considerable size and they're not skipping on development to let the community do the work.

lovely Wizard posted:http://forums.tf2maps.net/showthread.php?t=23104&page=10 The word I'm hearing is that Valve was giving zero feedback to the mappers. It was just a long series of "do you like this?" "nope" "okay how about this?" "nope" until Valve finally hit their deadline and said they won't accept the map. To be fair, the map does have some serious issues. But Valve's inability to provide any direction or feedback is a bigger failure even though it's been their MO about maps since 2007. They've effectively killed off community servers by implementing quick play, have stopped buying maps, and on the rare occasion they talk about map design they provide conflicting advice.

They said something about there being duck collecting leaderboards, so who knows maybe people who collect the most ducks will get a duck cosmetic or something when the "event" ends. Although if they were going to do that they probably would have said it upfront so that people might give half a poo poo.

This duck event really feels like a low-effort test-the-waters thing to see if players in TF2 are willing to pay money to opt into events like they are in DotA 2. It's a crummy event built out of stuff they already had, but they really just want to see if people will drop the $5 on participating in something with no tangible reward.

Your duck doesn't get levels it doesn't get xp. It's a noisemaker and there's rubber ducks that fall out of people but the two are completely unrelated. The fact that people waited for months for this is just incredible. A weapon focused update with 1 reskin. No map. A 4.99$ cosmetic and a bunch of crates. I always like to buy at least one key for new crates just to see what I get, and as luck would have it, I ended up with the exact thing I was hoping to get. I've been wanting a Pyro sitting taunt for ages, but I like this alternative better. I'm so easily amused.

Snowplow, straight off the bat changed the capture point mechanism to something exactly the same functionally but abstracted in a different way. (time -> health lowering over time). It was even a less useful method of signposting progress as time is more granular than health (when cut up into 10% chunks). That said, all the decent mappers have gone elsewhere, after cosmetics/weapon stuff came out mappers realized they may be getting a shorter end of the proverbial community backed money stick. You get what you pay for. Works both ways I guess. Fishbus fucked around with this message at 17:44 on Dec 9, 2014 |

But Snowplow has been in development for most of this year, and the train timer mechanic has been there since day one. Valve had months of opportunity to state that the mechanic was not a good idea and ask them to come up with something else. Instead the mappers got silence and eventually cut. It's stupid and Valve handled the whole thing poorly.

Because Valve is the customer and in most creative enterprises the client provides feedback to keep the project headed where it needs to go. You don't just clam up and hope for the best. Your point is good though, the mappers should have responded to community feedback and had plenty of chance to do so, but from what I've heard they thought they were doing what Valve wanted.

At the time I was super worried about having to find another job to make ends meet, and that pretty much resolved it immediately, and I could spend the next six months working on TF2 maps.

People have insane expectations of valve and tf2 for some reason. They honestly expect that valve would have hired voice actors, modelers, etc just to improve a tf2 community event. I'm sure valves' logic was a lot closer to "look how little work we'll have to do but we get to add something fun to tf2 lets do it" and it seems people here would have rather not gotten anything if it wasn't "good enough."
