hello bonjour, en francais we call the bread man l'homme de pain, because pain means bread and we're going to see a lot of pain this year and every nyrfan is looking forward to it and hey tony, can you wait until after my postgame interview to get on your phone? i thought you quit twitter...
"Black metal" and "death metal" meant something very different in 1985 than they do these days. Regardless of what they were referred to as, a lot of extreme thrash, darker heavy and speed metal, and generally any metal which deviated into dark themes was really quite different in the mid-80s. While the styles became fully formed and entirely deviant by the mid-90s, it's understandable why bands like Slayer and Venom are sometimes referred to as death and black metal. Hell Awaits and Black Metal were huge steps in the transformations of those styles.

But hey, even killer heavy/speed metal from 1984 drops the phrase "black metal" and Running Wild loving rules.

In short, listen to "Gates to Purgatory" and "Hell Awaits" and scream louder.

Show No Mercy and Hell Awaits are drat great albums. Reign in Blood is good but not great. South of Heaven is honestly my favorite album, while Seasons in the Abyss is good. Anything after that (besides a few select songs) is pretty much okay to terrible.

So I'm normally not big on prog metal, but Haken's album The Mountain has totally blown me away today. Cockroach King and Pareidolia in particular stand out for me, but truthfully this is the first time in awhile where I enjoyed just sitting and soaking in an entire album from start to finish.

Where do I go with prog metal from here? I've listened to almost nothing like this before so I'm open to any albums presenting a similar sound.

I probably should expand my progressive death metal explorations beyond just Opeth, too, I guess. No idea where to start there either.

Also, if you don't mind something more in the Sikth/Protest the Hero vein, Destrage released a pretty enjoyable album this year.

Edge of Sanity - Crimson (and Purgatory Afterglow, although that's more of a straightforward DM album)
Disillusion - Back to Times of Splendor
Augury - Fragmentary Evidence
Phlebotomized - Immense Intense Suspense
Cormorant - Dwellings

And two bands that aren't death metal at all (although frankly I don't consider Opeth a DM band) but I think Opeth fans should like: Orphaned Land (specifically Mabool) and maudlin of the Well.

A lot of the sound on The Mountain is because of Jens Bogren's very thick big-bottom mixing/mastering. Fiendish Dr. Wu already gave Leprous' Bilateral, so here are a few more albums that he's done:

Seconding these. Also obligatory prog death albums IMO:

Atheist - Unquestionable Presence
Supuration - The Cube
Timeghoul - Full discography
Martyr - Feeding the Abscess
Lykathea Aflame - Elvenefris
And Stargazer and Mitochondrion, if they count - I'd consider Parasignosis prog metal in the sense that it's heavily DSO-influenced, at least.

And if someone is an Opeth fan, they owe it to themselves to listen to the first Ne Obliviscaris album.
