I'm pretty much done with this game - my patron runs out the 20th and I am not inclined to renew so I'd like to offload some land for a reasonable price. Might as well get some money in case the game gets good eventually. I have a 16x16 and an 8x8 next to each other on the cliff in North TC if anyone is interested. Since we have a newbie (squeee) lets discuss the best uses for a 16x16. Beef (cows or water buffalo) According to http://imgur.com/a/91FCH you can get 20 on a 16X16, but I was never able to squeeze in more than 19. Buy 19 cows (47.5 gold) and feed them, them come back 21 hours later, feed them again, and kill them all. Takes a total of 589 labor. Selling the pelts and beef raw gets about 88 gold at current prices, so after the cost of feed and calves you net 38 gold per day. 6.4 silver/labor. Advantages: - only have to visit once a day. - you can process the results into more valuable leather and trimmed meat if you have labor to burn. - If you don't want to process the into trimmed meat, the vendor price for beef is quite high and you can vendor it for a good price for instant gold. - Decent silver/labor, so it is worthwhile to buy labor pots if you need them. Disadvantages: - placing the cows is kind of fiddly to get the maximum number on there. Get it a bit off any you might only get 16 or 17 on one day. - You're only there once a day, but that once a day you are there for a long rear end time. Feeding, killing, placing, and feeding again takes a while. - Calves don't stack. You have to carry 19 separate calves around in your pocket. If you are doing several farms at a time you'll probably have to make more than one trip to the livestock merchant. Sheep Pens 4 sheep pens cost 29.6 gold to build from mats, or more from the AH. (Send me, Anela, the mats and I can build pens for you). Once they mature you will spend 12 feed to get about 560 wool and 30 poop. At today's prices will net you about 12 gold/harvest. It takes 412 labor for each harvest, so about 2.9 silver/labor, which is right on the line of labor pots being worth it or not worth it. You can do this every 6 hours, for up to 4 harvests a day, but realistically most people won't get more than 3 harvest per day if you have to sleep or work. So either 36 gold per day, or up to 48 gold per day if you have no life. (Buying the pens is a one time cost, so I'm not including it in the g/day value). Advantages: - tending pens is quick and easy. - if you have labor to burn you can turn the wool into more valuable cloth (not usually worth the time/labor, but it is an option) - if you have a farmer's workstation you can turn the poop into fuel. - With careful placement there is enough room between the pens for up to 8 small trees (grapes, bay, figs, or bananas) and 4 small seed crops in the corners, which can net you a few more gold per day, but I'm not including it because it depends on too many variables. Disadvantages: - the clock is ticking. Pens can be harvested every 6 hours, and if you are late you're losing money. - occasionally a pen will need to repaired with lumber. This happens less often as your husbandry skill improves - a pen may collapse, needing to be torn down and replaced entirely. You'll get some mutton and pelts out of the slaughter, so it isn't a total loss, but it is a pain. - as a wool merchant, imps may make fun of you.

North TC isn't a bad place for larders. They take 3 days to mature and can ship them off to solzreed or cart to gweonid for some easy money. In the three days it takes, you can level and learn about the game and not worry about farming. I'll send you some in-game, if you don't use em, sell for some starter gold.

As for fitting twenty "medium" sized things on a 16x16, there's a certain "order of operations" to it. I have my own routine but it boils down to putting everything on the edges first. If you look at the picture in the link you'll actually see that there's a few distinct sections - build around the edges and work your way in. In other news I finally finished my lake plate set. Caster plate is really great for farming, and the 7 piece set bonus is stupid OP. Now I just need my t3 hasla (rip in piss).

As balista said, reliably getting 20 medium trees on a large is much easier if you order it right. Part of the trick is going almost over the line... it feels like only the dots mark the edge of both your plant and the farm borders, not the arc or line between the dots. You really have to slowly move until the instant it turns green, then place.
