Look I'm seriously confused, you want the thread to discuss religion, I ask religious questions that I genuinely don't understand, and all you do is ignore them, call me an idiot, and throw a tantrum when I can't respond to arguments I didn't make in the first place.

I get that the questions are difficult but, that's why I asked them. I don't get it either, if you're a devoted Catholic who has studied their faith then you would seem like a good person to ask. I'd go ask a priest but frankly I think they have enough problems to deal with on a daily basis and I wouldn't feel right bothering them.

You've spent so much time in this thread yelling at people, calling them all sorts, telling them to go to hell, telling them they're stupid for not understanding, ignoring on topic questions in favor of complaining about off topic ones, dropping conversations half way through and complaining to other people about doing the same...

I don't understand one bit. I have never in my life met a real, honest to god Christian who behaves like that. You hear about them on the news but no Christian of any denomination I've ever known has used their faith as a justification for spewing such vitriol and contempt towards other humans. Every one of them, clergy or layman, has displayed an abundance of compassion and charity towards others and carry God with them as a message of hope and love. I might not understand why they believe what they do but I can certainly respect them for doing it.

But I have no idea what you are, you say you're Christian, but you most certainly don't behave like it.

Like most of the New Testament is incredibly dry but I feel like Acts stands out well.

Acts is probably my favorite.

That and any of the other apocryphal Acts of various apostles all rule. Acts of Peter that stars Saint Peter in the coliseum doing a miracles v magic showdown with a wizard is great stuff

Are grapes gathered from thorns, or figs from thistles? 17 In the same way, every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus you will know them by their fruits.

It's great because the next verse specifically addresses people like Kyrie who claim the name of Jesus and say they're doing great things.

21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many deeds of power in your name?’ 23 Then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; go away from me, you evildoers.’

Most online zealots I see hanging about are like, really bad Christians. They all seem to believe their unique life is some grand holy battlefield and they can judge everyone and try to pre-empt God's plans. It is possible I don't understand Christianity though and that's encouraged.

Catholicismchat: Could the people dying of AIDS in Africa not just use birth control then go to confession?

Why is god such a weirdo that I need to gain his approval (and pay the church ofc) if I want to have sex with the woman I love without burning for eternity?

A big thing in Christianity is that knowing your sins are forgiven is not an excuse to knowingly sin. Since Catholic teaching is that birth control is sinful, you can't just go "Well I'll use a condom and then ask forgiveness" because that's gaming the system and God doesn't like people trying to find loopholes like that.

This is more a problem in Catholicism though because they have different levels of sin and the idea of penance/purgatory, not so much in Protestantism where the idea is all sins are equal and if you're just super sorry God will still forgive you even if you decided to purposely commit a sin, because there is only one unforgivable sin (which is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit).

It might be my inner English Nationalist speaking but I always sort of viewed Being French as more of a religion than any traditionally French religion, so I can imagine that might supersede it.

Actually genuinely curious if there's a prohibition against anything but lights-off missionary, so long as you're married to the person I would have though it'd be OK but there's always been a bit of a cultural stigma attached to the idea of having too much fun in bed, that I wondered if it was a Christian thing or not.

I think Catholics don't care what kind of positions you're in or how much fun you're having as long as when you shoot your load it goes into the vagina.

I think anything goes as far as foreplay as long as you stop and then the guy has to orgasm inside the vagina or its a sin.

So sayeth Catholic Answers: http://forums.catholic.com/showthread.php?t=573362

So a catholic blowjob ends in you quickly yanking down her pants and spasming once inside her. That must be incredibly popular with the ladies.

There is never an end to the guilt.

Also anal and blow jobs are not technically allowed but I imagine there's a lot of creative rule bending to allow some of any. What we can gather from medieval documents is that no one cared and just boned constantly.

This right here is honestly what so much of this poo poo boils down to. When you can control something as important and innate to the human condition as sex/sexual reproduction you can literally change the path that humanity takes.

"No masturbation" and "no sex before marriage" means that there's no healthy way to deal with sexual urges except by marrying someone as early as possible, so if you didn't choose right you're stuck in a loveless or even abusive marriage, which ties with "no divorce". Let's say you got lucky and your marriage is love-filled and blissful: "no birth control" means that there's no real way to limit the number of kids you have or when you have them, leading to families with 7 and 8 kids and no way to provide for all of them. Not to mention a much higher likelihood of complications during childbirth with so many kids. Similarly on the "no birth control": no condoms means that the spread of sexual diseases remains rampant even when it would be possible to slow/stop it; Africa and condoms is a well-known example.

To bring it back to the US, the stigma against gay sex and (gay people in general) combined with the resistance and even purposeful misinformation about condoms meant that AIDS was able to spread rampantly in the US, and once the realization that it wasn't a "gay disease" or "god's punishment to gays" (there are still loving people who wholeheartedly believe this:suicide:) it was too loving late. This misinformation continues to this very day, and there are many, many places with woefully inadequate sex education programs in the US. (This is a whole topic in itself.)

For a final, perfect example: look at what the stigma against homosexuality has done to Kyrie: he is repressing an integral part of himself because someone told him that homosexual thoughts are "immoral/unnatural/evil", and it's really loving him up. It's honestly rather depressing.:smith:

Yup, pointing that out was sort of the purpose of my post. We are ready to accept that existence of things and concepts opens up simultaneous paths to both evil and good (to use simple terms), but when religion preaches the same ambiguity of the human soul and its tendencies, it's decried as incompatible with some sort of universal moral presence (even though the believers in communism do not see the existence of the fascist ideology as a proof of impossibility of realizing the goals of their ideology).
