First, retirement communities and assisted living facilities are becoming like college campuses. They cram a lot of similarly aged people together, and when they do, things naturally happen. I mentioned these numbers to a friend, and she was not surprised. When her father moved into an assisted-living facility, she said, three women came by to introduce themselves within 30 minutes. And it wasn’t to compare Medicare pharmacy plans and premiums.

Second, older people are living longer and are in better health. As a result, they are remaining sexually active much later into life. Several major surveys, including the National Social Life, Health and Aging Project and the National Survey of Sexual Health and Behavior, report that among people age 60 and older, more than half of men and 40 percent of women are sexually active.

Combine retirement communities, longer life, unfamiliarity with condoms and Viagra — and what do you get? You get an S.T.D. epidemic among the Social Security generation that rivals what we imagine is happening in those “Animal House” fraternities.

Well, I think it's actually pretty predictable, because a huge part of what makes Christianity, like, rhetorically unique and powerful, is its appeal to the disadvantaged, it's call for radical equality and endurance of torments.

The problem is that when they are not oppressed, they have a big chunk of religious teachings which are inoperative, but still THERE, and it seems to cause problems in a fair number of individual Christians (and from there, a fair number of Christian communities.) Witness all the people acting as if wishing people a general end of year holiday joy (when they might be Christians, Christians who adhere to the adopted pagan custom involving trees and so on, Jews, Muslims, or whatever) is some kind of tyrannous oppression, because now they aren't saying "Merry Christmas!"

That! That is what Christianity faces in the West. The possibility that their hegemony might not be utterly absolute! That they might go from "the unquestioned vast majority" to merely "the great majority"!

Apparently God's running late:

quote:

5 And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;

26 Men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.

27 And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.

29 And he spake to them a parable; Behold the fig tree, and all the trees;

30 When they now shoot forth, ye see and know of your own selves that summer is now nigh at hand.

31 So likewise ye, when ye see these things come to pass, know ye that the kingdom of God is nigh at hand.

32 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away, till all be fulfilled.

Putting KE's weird hangups and obvious trolling to one side for a moment, a serious question:

How do afterlife-y types square the existence of a soul with brain damage and disease? What about the few occasions where someone has recovered from sever brain damage but lost a load of memories or suffered a severe personality change? Does some sort of integrated, optimised version of the guy get to go to heaven?

Unrelatedly, if your God is timeless, how does he "think" in any meaningful sense? Thought is a process, yo.

Kyrie Eleison:

Interesting. But let me ask you something: if I lose my arm, and a few years later I die and go to Heaven, do I get my arm back? What about if someone gets lots of cosmetic surgery: does God give them a new body that "keeps" all the alterations that they've made, or are they stuck with the 'natural' one? If a person is transgendered and they get SRS and other surgeries to 'pass' as their chosen gender, do they get a new body that reflects their identity, or does God go "lol nope, you're stuck the way you were born"? What if someone got brain damaged and forgot who they were: do they get restored in Heaven? What about people with debilitating congenital defects? Imagine a Harlequin baby that manages to survive until at least their teenage years, long enough to form a sense of identity and memories and relationships: do they get healed in Heaven or are they stuck with their condition?

Also, what is the soul? I'm assuming it is some kind of eternal aspect of ourselves, but frankly I can't think of anything about ourselves that is eternal. Everything changes. Nothing stays the same for very long. Our bodies and personalities are always changing. I'm not the same person that I was ten years ago. There isn't a single thing about me that isn't subject to change. So where is my true soul, my true identity? Is it merely the latest "version" of me, the state that I'm in at this present moment? Or is it my beginning state, which I guess would be a zygote? Which version goes to Heaven? This goes back to the question of what type of bodies we get in Heaven. My body is always changing, so which one do I get when I go to Heaven? If it's the latest one that I happen to have (what I looked like when I died), then I guess that means that we ARE stuck with the conditions and ailments that we had when we died, and now they're locked in place for eternity. That means that if you had a broken arm, you've got a broken arm forever. But I suppose God would heal us. But if so, does he do the same thing for things that are congenital, like birth defects? And what about voluntary changes that we've made to our bodies?

Well, you say that, ignoramus, but it seems that depends on how you define "inerrant." Looking into the matter, butt-lump, it would seem that the teachings of the Church fathers back in the old days was that the Bible was inerrant as originally recorded, and that any minor errors or contradictions were either due to the reader's misunderstanding or a trivial error in transcription. (Also you are stupid and bad. I'm just trying to keep up with your discourse here.)

Here's a remark, dummy dumb dumb butt poopy head, which comes from someone who I am sure you will claim to be a heretic:

http://www.religioustolerance.org/inerran1.htm posted:

Augustine of Hippo (354-430 CE): He supported absolute inerrancy in a letter to St. Jerome. He wrote:

"On my own part I confess to your charity that it is only to those books of Scripture which are now called canonical that I have learned to pay such honor and reverence as to believe most firmly that none of their writers has fallen into any error. And if in these books I meet anything which seems contrary to truth, I shall not hesitate to conclude either that the text is faulty, or that the translator has not expressed the meaning of the passage, or that I myself do not understand. ..."

He emphasizes that inerrancy only applies to the original autograph copy as written in Hebrew, Aramaic or Greek:

"For I confess to your Charity that I have learned to yield this respect and honour only to the canonical books of Scripture: of these alone do I most firmly believe that the authors were completely free from error. And if in these writings I am perplexed by anything which appears to me opposed to truth, I do not hesitate to suppose that either the manuscript is faulty, or the translator has not caught the meaning of what was said, or I myself have failed to understand it."
Do you - fool and clown though you are (again, I'm just trying to get your rhetorical method right, let me know if I'm a little off base here) - feel that this was a correct perception by Augustine of Hippo? How does the church, donglord, justify or interpret the line under dispute? Throw in a couple more cusses here, I'm kind of running low on them.

e: It would seem that we could just add one additional clause on Augustine's elements here - which is that the Bible was not written by a scientific people, and that the matters involved are often discussed in colloquial terms. Much as the Bible does not go into great detail on the preparing of wine or the casting of iron, it did not elaborate on the details of astronomy, evolutionary biology, etc.
