Korra is an important part of the large number of really excellent western television animations that are going on this decade. It is not the best of them, however.

The Sharmat posted:Are there any surviving ones in the same genre as Legend of Korra? Steven Universe tends to be pretty action-y. And the creator has indicated that Steven will probably age as the show continues. So he will likely change from magical pre-teen to magical teen, and it's looking like he'll be part of some larger battle that he's not entirely aware of yet. So... kind of the same genre as Korra, I'd say!

Even the good anime on that list isn't honestly as good as Korra for the most part. Also I did not see or notice Macross or Patlabor so list wrong to start. And Gundam Wing and Evangelion are not good any how. GW is a fun watch but it's honestly stupid as gently caress. Evangelion ends with a movie that is so full of loving poo poo NO WHATS WRONG WITH YOU SICK BASTARDS it's not even funny. The 2 rebuild movies in legit English have a couple issues already. (No I don't need to see 14 year old girls on their bed in underwear. Nobody does. Not even actual 14 year olds. ) Honestly shows like Korra I like BETTER than so called adult tv or movies. Not explicit in violence, language, and sexuality. They generally have to show some restraint and are better for it. And tend to be more mature. I mean did any of you watch ER or Friends? They may have been for an adult audience but the adult audience are clearly childish immature easily amused idiots. (But I deal at a casino and was in the Navy. Most people act as much like out of control high schoolers as they can get away with regardless of age and income. Old rich people are loving dreadful. Middle aged men are even worse. I swear I am a Goddamned alien sometimes..) Same reason I enjoy Doctor Who and that Hasbro cartoon with a terrible fan base. (Not Transformers which merely has normally terrible fans and not Kill It With Fire level bad.) Korra has more depth and heart than most 80s tv period which was about as banal and idiotic as you could get outside of a few bright spots or 70s reruns that had some balls. (And for cartoons most of the good poo poo was Japanese imports or coproductions with France usually.) But the mindset is cartoons are dumb things for kids. Adults gotta watch crime dramas with people getting shot gunned to the face and classes quip dude makes a comment over the gaping place where there used to be a face n poo poo. Not to mention HBO shows which seem to be trying too hard to be edgy and adult even if we were blessed with a topless Lizzie Caplan on that show with Rogue. I actually like good fantasy escapism, especially when it has a good emotional or ethical core to it. Fat Guy with hot but hateful wife sitcom ain't my idea of fantasy. Nightmare maybe. And no giant robots or stuff. ( And do we need to mention how shows like BSG and Heroes hosed up to various levels? No. It's honestly why I am glad Selfie only got a half season. No chance to gently caress it up or regurgitate itself endlessly. ) So yeah. Good shows are good. Cartoons can be better because restraint equals creativity instead of being like Andrew Dice Clay or a Eli Roth movie and thus being childish yet totally inappropriate to kids if not everyone. gently caress I wrote a lot. And I was gonna talk about how 70s Avatar could work and even a way to keep Korra and Asami around via Spirit World stuff but this wordpile rant was more important. Even if 90s Avatar would be lame because who wants a grunge Avatar. We barely survived Seattle sound, Spice Girls, and the Burger King Kids Club once. Let us never return to the dark times of Friends and Hootie's Blowfish.

The problem with any anime with action in it is that it invariably has the scene where a woman tries to play with the big boys and either gets quietly shoved to the side or blatantly shut down and needs the man to take over. Korra is awesome cause moms and women of all ages can bust out bad rear end martial arts moves as much as anyone.

The author is a woman and the end result is that it probably has more badass women doing things than any given anime around it. (The actual manga adaptation. The first anime does exactly what you say.)

Only "Western" shows I can think of that are pretty good Simpsons Aeon Flux Archer Batman TAS Batman Beyond The Boondocks The Critic Gargoyles Adventure Time Gravity Falls Justice League/Unlimited Clone Wars cartoon Morel Orel Pirates of Dark Water ExoSquad South Park Spiderman 90s series Venture Bros It pretty much breaks down into shows based on another popular IP, shows created to sell toys that actually beat the average and were good, and dark/mature/more "mature" stuff that gets aired in primetime/late night. Since Western cartoons are almost 100% targeted at the 7-13 crowd and geared up for toy sales and other accessories there was never much of a drive to make western cartoons appeal to an older audience. What happened with MLP is a insane exception to the rule and will unfortunately be how most people remember the American cartoon genre for years.

The Sharmat posted:That's kind of depressing. I don't want it to just be remembered as "that one cartoon that ended with lesbians". I don't think it will be that shallow a remembrance but it is a scene that will resonate a lot more strongly than it perhaps should, relative to everything else. Compared to TLA I don't think LOK just had as many equivalent memorable character scenes. Shorter seasons means a lot more focus has to be given to the narrative whereas the "filler" (by "filler" I just mean episodes that didn't directly advance the main plot) episodes of TLA allowed a lot more of those singular moments. Zuko Alone, Katara in The Southern Raiders, Iroh in Tales Of, whatever the episode was where Toph meets Iroh - all plots focused solely on a single character which then make later moments have even more impact. With less time, LOK generally has to build up to that "one moment" during the climax for everybody to have almost at once and that just won't ever be as effective. In any case, though it could have used more "filler" to build up to it rather than the not-so-subtle hints of seasons 3 and 4, Korra and Asami is an important one, especially at the end of a season filled with amazing women. Being the last thing you see just makes it seem even more important, being unexpected even more so. It's only natural, really.

Oh yeah, Rebels is action-y and good! I think my larger point was just that, western animation may not be anywhere near the state of the anime industry, but there is a lot of really, really good stuff right now, and if that continues, the networks might start to be more willing to take chances (like CN with Over the Garden Wall... not that that should be seen as taking a chance, because it was brilliant), and try things in genres like action.

A recent good Western Animation show was oddly enough Mystery Inc which is mind boggling since it's Scooby Doo, but it really did have a lot heart and talent behind it. Had a great voice cast, neat story, and oddly enough also kind of had Velma explore a relationship with another woman.

I'm not going to defend some dude drawing erotica but I'll stand by that a shocking proportion of people bitching about anime don't actually have any idea what they're talking about. Rock becomes kind of annoying when he starts to question the insanity and becomes whiny because criminals do bad things. When he embraced it, though, we got what happens in the gif. The manga is still going and I wish they'd adapt more of it into anime. But Korra will be remembered not because "of the lesbians" but because a strong woman with a character arc road into the sunset with someone she had feelings for. For the gay community that's a huge deal because the relationship wasn't stereotypical, it wasn't shoved down your throat, it was just something that happened over time and no attention was drawn to it, like it was some sort of political correctness checklist item. It was normal, which in some places that sees homosexuality as abnormal, that's a big step. Not to mention the floodgates that it opened for shows to have homosexual relationships be they between two men or two women. All fingers will point to this show. Or to the next show that does it but I guarantee they will cite this show as inspiration for that bold step.

icantfindaname posted:It's always hilarious when people whose only exposure to anime is clearly through second hand stories on the internet bloviate and hand wring about how Problematic it is Yeah I get irked by people who refuse to even try any anime based on that kind of reasoning when there's a lot of cool poo poo to be found, but you gotta admit it's pretty slim pickings to find a show with even half as many strong female characters as Korra. Most of the time if you do it's either something like Fairy Tail, where you've got these insane badasses like Erza and Mirajane but in return every single woman (including the two mentioned previously) is sexualized to the point of absurdity, or it's something like Sailor Moon where almost the entire cast are women so it's slightly less... I dunno, impactful? Is that the right word? Meanwhile Korra doesn't even really draw attention to the fact that at least half its cast of heroes are women because there's also plenty of guys doing cool stuff too. For as much criticism as Korra gets I think it's a massive step forward for a lot of things about western animation and I hope it doesn't just get left as a footnote because it had a tumultuous existence and some writing issues(both big and small).
