Patreon decided to change it's policies by adding & changing their community guidelines

Specifically

http://www.patreon.com/guidelines

quote:

Bullying, Harassment, Threats and Hate Speech:
Patreon should feel like a safe place for normal people. We don’t allow bullying or harassment on Patreon. At the same time, we want people to be able to express themselves, be critical, and discuss controversial issues. We recognize that discussing celebrities, media or other public figures can sometimes involve harsh criticism, and we believe that is an appropriate part of free debate. That said, there is no room on Patreon for hate speech or serious threats of violence. For us, hate speech includes serious attacks on people based on their race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sex, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability or serious medical condition.

Nudity and Pornography:
Patreon is not for pornography, but some of the world’s most beautiful and historically significant art often depicts nudity and sexual expression. Because of that, we allow nudity and suggestive imagery, as long as it is marked NSFW. Think of the policy as allowing “R Rated” movies... but not porn. In keeping with our strong commitment to safety, we have zero tolerance for content that sexualizes children in any way.

Facilitating Harmful or Dangerous Activity:
We don’t allow funds to be collected for organizations that promote, forums that distribute, or anything else that primarily facilitates harmful or dangerous activities. For example, an organization that promotes sexual abuse, intellectual property violations, weapons, commercial spamming, self harm, drug manufacturing techniques, or property crimes would be prohibited from receiving funds through Patreon.

People Who Can’t Use Patreon:
Because Patreon empowers people financially, we impose restrictions not only on the types of media and projects that can be funded on Patreon, but also on which people can and cannot receive funds through Patreon. After creating a Patreon page, any creator caught in the act or convicted of making credible violent threats, committing violent crimes, malicious doxing, coordinating nonviolent harm such as fraud, or encouraging others to do the aforementioned harmful activities may be banned from using Patreon.

People with a dangerous criminal history or known affiliation with violent or dangerous groups including terrorist or cyberterrorist organizations, organized criminal groups, and violent hate groups, cannot receive funds through Patreon, no matter the purpose or apparent intention of their Patreon page. Similarly, anyone who has ever been convicted of child sex abuse, fraud, or money laundering is not permitted to collect funds through Patreon.

Now surprisingly this covers a significant number of people that currently use Patreon, who have gotten notices that they will be defunded in a month. They're not taking it well...

Anyways so far 8chan.co has announced it's getting it's Patreon account closed on the grounds it allows "illustrated child porn" on it's site (Hentia) and it facilitates self harm such as suicide.) It has responded to it's notification that it's patreon is being taken down by re purposing it. It is now totally dedicated to supporting Frederick, a man in a wheelchair, youtube show about his cat as well as paying the woman who cares for his cat.. Frederick also happens to won 8chan, but it's totally not going to 8chan.

How does Patreon expect to make money if they alienate all the porn folks that shuffled over there to make more consistent money than twitch.tv subs and donations? I mean, they're not gonna stop making porn, and now Patreon just opened the gates for a smut-friendly competitor to pop up and steal the weirdo fetish money.

I tend to overestimate just how much money flows through that part of the internet, but I guess I'd have to see some numbers on Patreon's user count and associated supporter/money volumes.

Its the only reason Patreon existed. (They accepted money that was somehow too dirty for Kickstarter)

The poo poo hitting the fan is a ton of annoying shitheads on the internet throwing a hissy fit, or maybe he meant Patreon shutting down (because they'd get no more business).

There would have been poo poo hitting the fan if they suddenly banned all the people doing drawn porn, especially since they'd had direct communication with a lot of them on what is acceptable. But apparently they're just unable to write clear definitions so there's no issue.

I'll laugh pretty hard if the 8chan ban dodge works, though. But that will take a few weeks to be sure.

You have literally no idea what Patreon is then. Also that role was already filled by Indiegogo and the dozens of actual pron based kickstarter clones like offbeatr. Did you really just go "Patreon looks kinda like porn if I squint" and assume that's what it's for from there? Cuz it sounds like you did.

The whole deal with Patreon is that it allows people to receive money on a user-set-period-of-time basis, where the whole deal with Kickstarter is you get one lump sum when a project campaign ends, and unlike indiegogo where you could use a flexible funding thing to receive things as they came in, but couldn't really set up a "pay me every week x amount" thing.

Patreon does seem like a good way for internet content producers - especially those who do it as a hobby to get a little something in exchange for thier efforts. If the audience likes it, they can pay, if the audience doesn't, they don't. Seems fairer than the "thanks for funding our kickstarter...oops we have no product, well see ya!" deal that happens sometimes.

The issue is, of course, that if the content producer doesn't deliver, the audience has to chose to stop funding them, but often they don't. Dresden Cloak missing its deadlines constantly is a good example - yet the fans keep pumping in money, without any content being delivered on time.

There is Noah Antwiler, aka The Spoony One who last I checked (admittedly maybe 2 months or so ago) was getting 5 grand a month and still has yet to go through with actually producing content outside of movie vlogs that are longer then the movie itself and twitter slapfights.

Look closely. They're set to get paid per video they put out. It says monthly videos but I kinda doubt how much they stick to such a schedule.

Also, backers who have their payment method fail get dropped off the total each time the "payment event" fires plus Patreon takes a fee for successful payments etc.

It's kind of a neat thing with Patreon, that it's not just "pay per month/week", honest people can actually do it as "per comic I actually publish" etc

The hilarious thing is that Patreon has a "per case" payment, where patrons are only charged when a content provider actually provides a instance of content, as well as "per month", because they know patrons should have a modicum of sense when choosing which artist to support and know that there's some that take forever to produce content.

I guess when you have a name on the internet, it's a license to steal.

The people giving to Spoony's Patreon are expecting him to do scripted review videos, where he makes fun of game or movie, and has pre-written jokes and production values and things, not vlogs though.

That's what he got popular for, and for him to not do them and just pump out vlogs (he's got a habit of making review vlogs about films that are longer than the film he's been to see (his video where he just talked straight to the camera about his thoughts after coming back from seeing The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is 146 mins long - that's more than the run time of the movie!). People are paying for him to make those, not vlogs. But if people want to contrbute, its their choice, I guess.
