Fanservice and the way anime uses it is what it's commenting on, though.

There's a difference between self awareness and self criticism. It's one thing to say "anime fanservice, which we are displaying an exaggerated version of here, is bad" and another to say "anime fanservice, which we are displaying an exaggerated version of here, is loving awesome". Kill la Kill is the second

Like this isn't hard to understand

I'm bad at expressing ideas. If you interrogated me about my favorite food, I'd say I love it because it tastes great. It's action, it's design, it's characters-poo poo, I don't know how to get more in depth then that. It's just awesome. It's an enjoyable roller coaster ride anime. I literally don't know how to go into more detail then pointing at elements that I like and saying they're done well.

But I'm fine with people disagreeing with me about it.

Well, poo poo! This thread suddenly got interesting! Now here's a quick question I'm hoping somebody who has worked for Crunchyroll, Hulu or Daisuki might answer: If we can agree that Mahouka was a huge turd, why the gently caress did those gel-haired deep thinkers here at my company's licensing department thought it'd be a good idea that we got it as part of our catalogue on a good chunk of our regions?

Then again, they also got the streaming rights for Gintama down here in México, so maybe only a few of them are as dumb as a bag of bricks.

KLK would have been more interesting if it had taken a different Main Character as the focus. And, obviously, less than cringe-worthy. :cripes:

e: vvvv I just hope we can avoid what happened with the Tobias Funky recommendations. Vvvv

It's not like they individually go through every episode of every show they license. Light novel adaptions tend to do well regardless of quality. Plus, the premise is neat. Pretty people go to a school for modern magic after a bunch of magic wars.

A moderate amount of people watched it so I figure that's good enough. Unless you're Discotek and can command evil forces to keep your company in business while licensing the most obscure stuff that everyone else deems unprofitable, it's all about the numbers.

No he's right, Japanese kissing is almost universally disgusting. And, in many animes it is portrayed as borderline sexual assault even on willing subjects.

I remember some weird mecha anime/future school hijinks a while back a pilot went berserk from his machine connection and raped a girl, but she tried to act like it wasn't a big deal, whereas when someone is trick-kissed in anime its "I'm soiled forever just let me die".

"It's almost satire!" Is a really bad way to swipe dumb poo poo under the rug because by all accounts KlK Attempts to be satire but then just becomes the thing it is satirizing. That was the worst part about the show, at times they took things too far and the line between 'we're making commentary!!' and actual kind of gross, sexualized humor became blurred.

I liked the second half of KlK quite a bit. I'm gay, I could care less about titty anime, but like.... KlK's biggest flaw is that it becomes what it makes fun of. It was a pretty big thing.

Also: I've lived in Japan. PDA is very weird and foreign but kissing is most certainly not considered sexual assault. In all actuality, there are very few boundaries in Japan. Guys would go up to girls they were not dating all the time and kiss them, and while the girls would freak out, no one would get into any trouble for it because it was just Dudes Bein Dudes. People get Kancho'd all the time no matter the age and it's not uncommon to see people pantsed or other sexual things happen without reparation. So yeah, that's just like, objectively false.

Japan is an oddly repressed society but one of the ways that manifests is there being no boundaries and people never getting in trouble for doing poo poo because it's seen as normal. I lived in a relatively conservative area and yet I still walked onto two people loving in a park at night.

I watched the show dude, there was never any attempt at critique or subtlety or anything at all besides "hey wouldn't it be awesome if we had 18 year old girls have DBZ fights while wearing stripper outfits with a soundtrack of overdriven buttrock?" I'm continually baffled by the attempts to paint it as some kind of nuanced commentary on fanservice or whatever the gently caress

To the show's credit, it's not even all that bad by anime standards aside from the bad touch stuff. Even with the occasional sort of rapey scenes the female characters were written alright, and were pretty strong/good etc. It could have been much, much much worse. But that doesn't change the fact that it's still Imaishi drawing big titty cartoon ladies because he loving loves big titty cartoon ladies

There is nothing to be baffled about. The show is completely earnest about being a fanservice show, the nuanced commentary stuff is added by people trying to justify liking it. I have no problem with fanservice and bouncing tits and enjoyed the sheer ridiculousness of the show but I don't pretend it is something deep.

Anyways, I typically just watch anime that has been recommended to me so yeah, of all the stuff I saw (which was not much), KLK was definitely the worst of the year, everything else was pretty drat good, specially Ping-Pong.

It's tongue-in-cheek and they're having fun with it, but that doesn't mean it's a 'parody' or meant to be some ownage stab at fanservice at anime. It's still clearly big tits because big tits are cool, not any deeper meaning.

KLK was the unfortunate culmination of recent "over the top" animes being really popular and someone's idea to do a retro style anime with tons of fanservice mixed with that one creepy editor in the office going "DON'T FORGET THE INCEST/RAPE STUFF! THE MARKET IS GOING CRAZY FOR THE INCEST/RAPE STUFF RIGHT NOW" and no one else has seniority enough to override him.
