Still a pretty good midrange phone. And you can get 8.1 via the Preview for Developers.

Take his advice, I own a 925 and is a fantastic phone, 1Gb RAM and a nice camera. It basically made my Galaxy S4 my secondary phone instead of being a back up phone. Once I got my 925 on the dev preview thing, everything went better. Now if Microsoft pushes WP enough, I'm sure that when I end my actual contract (2016), I'd keep using android for tablets but a Lumia as phone.

RVProfootballer posted:Install the Microsoft apps and ignore the Google ones? Not sure you need a guide for that. Take it down a notch. What annoys me about Google is one of the same reasons I don't use Facebook. Too much upkeep/overhead I don't need in my life in terms of who sees what, what is private, what poo poo is being done for me that I don't want done, etc. I don't know who looks for me on Google+, I don't know what they'll find, I don't know what this poo poo is or why it is on my Google+ account, etc. All I know is I didn't want to set up an account but it was forced onto me via Youtube or my previous Android devices (if I recall). ^^ Behold my personal Google+ page I guess? Yes I realize I probably sound like some old fart but I didn't set that page up, I don't know who can see it, and in my mind if I didn't willingly do something no social media site should be doing it for me. Just like when Facebook was messing with peoples privacy settings requiring them to then go in and check their poo poo all the time for fear of people seeing private things. I'm paraphrasing that because remember I don't use facebook anymore. I realize things like that Google+ page/account may be harmless, but since it was forced on me now I have to do the legwork to find out whether or not it's something I like/dislike. To paraphrase Rumsfeld, "I don't know what I don't know" about Google services intermixing/requirements which forces me to then learn about things I don't care about (G+ for example). RVProfootballer posted:E: Do you not realize you can set default apps on Android? You don't have to use any Google service if there's an alternative available. No, you can't use the Play Store without a Google account, just like you can't use any app store without the appropriate account. No, because you see, I haven't been using Android, hence my question. I do have an old Google account, I'm trying to basically not be forced to use Google+ or Gmail for stuff. All I/they would need is Play Store access and would then use MS services by default. It sounds like this is doable so good. Anyway I think I have what I need to dive into this. Consider this derail over! Thanks for the link Maneki Neko, that looks like what I've been looking for. Sodding hell. Is there really no app I can use to edit / create a docx saved to OneDrive, other than the utterly useless default one? I want to be able to set indents, change fonts, things like that. How does WP Office not include a word processor? How are there no 3rd party apps that can do it? I must be missing something. If not, I'm flogging this 930 straight after New Year. I've had enough of this nonsense.

I think I'm the guy WP is designed for. Completely ADHD about how I use my phone. I've got the HTC M8 and, though initially hesitant about moving from the Lumia line (with a brief period of using a Galaxy), I'm loving it. Then again, I only make brief acquaintance with any of my apps. I can see how anyone wanting more intimate function out of their apps could be extremely frustrated.

I'm pretty much the same way, only apps I use are awful, readit, myTube, and facebook messenger. The annoyance and lack of apps doesn't really affect me. Although the facebook messenger apps drains battery ridiculously fast, and forced me to uninstall it and use the website instead. The facebook app luckily provides notifications for messaging. Would have of course preferred a 930/icon instead of the m8 windows, as it was a logical upgrade from the 920. Microsoft probably hosed that one up.

My brother has a M8 windows phone (brand new) and is having an issue. With any extra app that didn't come with the phone he gets an error trying to use it. First if he actually tries to use the app (which has been downloaded and installed) it just goes to the app download page with an "update app" button on it. If he clicks update it says theres a problem with his Microsoft Account and to click next to fix it. Clicking next goes to the Microsoft Account page where he logs in and... Nothing. It logs in fine but going back to the app just becomes rinse repeat. Any ideas?

Does his Microsoft account have two factor authentication? That might be the issue, so he'll have to create an app password and use that instead when prompted to login. And xylo, tell people that there's people hankering for a 1020 successor, preferably soon.

Took advantage of the $50 Xbox music offer during the daily deals last week...and almost regretting it. Cripes, with all the grief the Xbox music app on the phone gets, the 8.1 app is something else. It's really astonishing how poor designed and buggy these apps are, I really have to wonder if the team has ever used a music player before.

So I finally dunked my 1520 in a bath. It was submerged for a little under a second, the screen was initially unresponsive but after a restart (I held the power button to cut power to circuits before the water causes a short) turned off OK. It's currently sitting in a box of rice to absorb any other water after I removed the sim and micro SD. The SD has a little water which was reporting as unrecognised/unloaded. I think it will be generally OK though I'm concerned the microphone and/or speakers will be hosed if the diaphragms are paper. Any thoughts on this? How resistant are 1520s from water dunks? In the meantime I'm back on the 920. My god it's teeny. (speaking if which I totally forgot the 920 screen has a tobacco-yellow tinge at the bottom near the buttons, post 8.1 preview install from way back iirc. Is this normal? What is it?) Time did pass the entire concept by a bit, but the failure to parlay the Zune stuff into a cornerstone of the new phone offering was a boneheaded mistake to make. As it happens they also later rather trashed a lot of what was good about their first try at a phone platform as well, so I guess having the decent parts of Zune survive both revamps would have been too much to expect. I'm on Spotify and pretty OK with the mobile situation myself these days, so I have very little personal investment in that, but it is hard not to recognize it as a series of messups anyway. I rather hope that the Zune team got good positions in other divisions, as they quite clearly knew what they were doing despite fighting an almost impossible fight at the time.

So thanks to the Christmas break, I finally got around to finishing a working build of a new Windows Phone app. So here it is: PSN Messenger. Currently it's unlisted, because I'm hoping there would be a few goons who would be open to trying it out and giving me feedback. I also set up a UserVoice for it, so people there can tell me how much the app sucks, or come up with some feature request I will ignore. Currently it can
This is a rewrite of FoulPlay, the other PlayStation app I pulled from the store earlier this year. This version, as far as I can tell, has no hard lock issue that the previous version had. So basically, it should not gently caress up your phone if you install it. Also, the actual layout of the app should be a bit cleaner and should actually look nice now. I have not rewritten every feature that other app had, but that's because I want to make sure the base app actually works fine before adding a billion features to it that only partially work. If you're interested it in at all, you may want to download it. When it becomes stable enough and I want to actually publish it, I may start charging for it (Only like a buck or two, but still).
