Good thing if they refuse to join, a quick phone call to my director tattling that "x is refusing to troubleshoot our CUSTOMER FACING ISSUE on a bridge" people tend to get in trouble, so bridge calls are basically the only power over other people that I have. Spend two hours of other people pointing fingers at one another, open a bridge and call both their managers and suddenly it's fixed within 15 minutes. Usually a threat of a bridge is enough to make people take action. I swear, sometimes I think I have to manipulate people more than I manipulate computers at this place.

The fun thing though back when I was in Client ProSupport is when it's an issue where someone lost their Office key from 2-3 years ago because "they didn't think they needed it" and then demand we give it to them. It's like if you threw away your car keys and then wanted the car dealership to give you an exact copy. chocolateTHUNDER posted:I saw my boss do this once, with I think Dell and VMware. Heh. Reminds me of the overflow tray on my old xerox. I pulled it out for replacement and noticed the tabs that hold it closed were busted, so I ran off to get a garbage bag and some heavy duty tape to basically seal the thing shut in it's own hermetic bag of "gently caress that". Naturally my boss wanders by moments later and goes "What's this!" snags it and dumps toner loving everywhere as the thing basically disintegrates as he's waving it around like a baton or whatever the gently caress he was doing. skooky posted:Can I just say, from my experience working for a hardware vendor, Microsoft are probably the absolute worst at conf calls. I have two domain controlers. Domain controler 1 is the primary and everything is fine (ish). Secondary is not replicating as in at all, and we're in an environment where users are created/updated deleted hourly. It hasn't replicated in several weeks, and this is before VM's were really a thing so just spinning up a tertiary wasn't an option. Figuring we'll burn some support hours we call microsoft. His first action was to demote the PDC as a domain controller. Bad stuff happened, tech response was "Eh what you gonna do, we're microsoft!" I'm off this week, but I saw an email from an employee at my work (they are also off this week - the place is closed) saying that she had bought herself a new "cpu" (she means computer), and was wondering if she could pay me to help her install Office (she says she has the software) and transfer files from her current computer to the new one and was wondering what I might charge. I have never done something like this - work on the side - and I don't think I'm very interested in starting... new house, 4 month old at home, etc. I also have no idea how much I would charge if I were so inclined to do something like this. I like this person though, so I thought I'd just send her a link to a wiki on Windows Easy Transfer (I'm assuming that works fine? I've only ever used USMT), and I'm sure she can handle installing Office...

With all the (good) stress in your life, why would you take on supporting Microsoft Office for the life of her computer? It doesn't sound that way now, but what are you going to do when the baby is crying, the furnace on the new house is out, and the phone rings and it's her with 'just a quick question about pivot tables'? You like her and you are coworkers. This may sound bitter, but once someone pays you to do work for them, the relationship becomes unequal. If you are not able to support her, how will that affect your relationship?

Yeah - there's really no chance of me actually going to her house and doing this for her, I've already decided on that. I was just debating whether or not to send a quick email suggesting Easy Transfer and a politely-worded sentence to the effect of "I'm not helping in any way past this." If I were single and had fewer responsibilities, $200 might be tempting, but nope.

An IM came in from one of our help-desk leads (I used to be the lead over there before moving to our NOC). Apparently our email filtering software now has a profanity filter that's not configured very well as it's picking up peoples names from their signature lines as well as people using XXXX instead of credit card numbers it assumes is porn since it's seeing 3 X's in a row. One guy who's last name is hooker is using zero's to get around it so all his email doesn't get quarantined. Quite a few Richard's who are going as "Dick" are also getting stopped.

"gently caress, I got a parking ticket... how do they know my email? I've spent the last couple of months slowly catching up on this thread, mostly at work. To Blackswordca and Dick Trauma, if I ever see you two in my town, I'm gonna have to buy you guys some drinks. You two basically went through what I went through at a bunch of previous jobs. That is, getting used and abused by my superiors and asked to do everything above and beyond my pay grade for no reward or acknowledgement, then getting poo poo on for it. Currently, I'm the sole installation and support technician for an up and coming credit card and payroll processing company in my town, and have been working there for a bit over a year. It's honestly a really good job, and the partners all care about the employees and want to see them succeed. For the curious, when a business wants to process credit cards, they come to us. We do a cost analysis, determine how we can save them money, they sign the contracts, we set them up with a merchant account, and then I program and install a credit card terminal for them. We utilize several different types of terminals, which are suited to different situations, as well as a couple of online and mobile processing portals and as of this past summer, a point of sale system. We also do payroll processing for our clients, but I don't touch that side of things, so I don't know a great deal about it. So basically, my job boils down to knowing the internal intricacies of programming and troubleshooting roughly 7 different systems that are all end user facing, and doing so for roughly the western third of my state. We've got just shy of 1,300 clients and this year we were labeled one of the top 10 fastest growing companies in our region, so that number is always going up. I'd like to say "A ticket came in...", but we don't have a ticketing system. Everything's done through Gmail, Google Hangouts, and a couple of programs that we use to view client info and comments from the various helpdesks and POS providers we regularly talk with. For a shop of 15 people, it works well enough. My story for today, is that a text came in, from Tim. See, Tim's on a family vacation right now. His away message says he's got limited email and phone access, and to call the office if there's a big problem. Apparently, about 2 weeks ago, one of our clients contacted him and asked him to replace a broken USB card swiper they had. This shouldn't have been a big deal, since they're pretty close to us and we have tons of replacements. Instead, Tim forgot to do it, and never mentioned it to anyone. Fast forward to 8pm today, and he sends me a text frantically requesting that I drop everything I'm doing tomorrow morning to go to this merchant and replace their swiper. He forwarded me the email through text. It literally says "Hey, just wanted to know if you're going to have time to bring us that swiper any time soon. No rush or anything, we just need it by the end of next week." I'm going to be on the other side of town all day tomorrow installing a POS for a client that I scheduled with 2 weeks ago, so I'm forwarding this to my manager, whose on the same level as Tim and filing the whole thing under "Nope", with a note saying "get to it whenever". Thankfully, the client is very understanding, and my manager knows Tim does this poo poo literally all the time. Like, at least twice a week. I've got more stories about Tim, as well as stories from previous, non-IT jobs. There's a bunch of poo poo that happened at the bowling alley I worked at before this job which can be tangentially related to the thread topic, as well as a completely unrelated story about The Worst Shift I Ever Worked, which was fast food. If you guys wanna hear about any of that, I'm game to write something up tomorrow.

Sorry! vv:" It's really great because every time you make a change on our sandbox, it's a coin toss as to whether the payment flow's changed because of something you did, or something their developers did. Thankfully (?) their developers are all in eastern europe so due to timezones the toe-stepping doesn't overlap too much, but we've definitely had "It was working fine when I went home last night" moments on days when we were supposed to be deploying.
