Actually, from a few video's I've seen, Toyota's and Ford's can handle it okay. On my Tundra I can also disable the TCS temporarily to force wheel spin. But, snow tires are awesome. Drove home on some pretty shittastic roads on Sunday, and handled it without a hiccup. Felt nice to be glued to the road in a truck - my old Tacoma (never bought winters), I was comfortable driving, but I know if things had gone wrong I wouldn't have been able to recover as well. And our Venza is a goddamn mountain goat, the thing is glued to the road.

Below a certain speed (around 35km/h IIRC) ABS becomes less efficient than simply locking the brakes so a lot of cars don't bother. You may have been right on the threshold of that speed and it could've caused some unusual behaviour. Or it's just french.

I drive a car made in 1986 so let me, the cold weather time traveler, tell you how grandpa did things when he was driving uphill both ways in that roaring blizzard of '93 mostly it's very careful application of throttle (not too many speed demons from the 80s so this isn't as big of a problem as you'd think), taking advantage of my expansive greenhouse to be very mindful of what drivers are doing around me and cursing sealed beam headlights for throwing almost no light - this is legit the only thing I can't believe people did without, how the gently caress did we not all die from driving into things in the road that we couldn't see?

The headlamps being unable to illuminate the backside of the front bumper probably would have been more of an issue if the wipers had in any way been able to clear water off the windscreen. In fact I might have actually died with a steering column protruding from the back of my neck, and my ghost just hasn't realized it yet.

It was fine because everyone else had sealed beams so your night vision wasn't being blown out by oncoming HIDs all the time. In fact, I'd argue it was BETTER, because the dimmer yet adequate lights let you keep more night vision and can therefore better see more outside of the range of your headlights. Now beam brightness is just an arms race. I'm totally fine in the 80s Porsche at night right until a HID-ladden SUV drives past. Then it takes a bit to regain my night vision (yes, I'm also getting older and I can tell the difference in my night vision because of it).

It pains me to live in a world where people are that unaware of basic, uh, geometry, I guess? That's a special kind of stupid that lets you think going around the pump will magically put the gas door on the other side of the car.

We had about 3" of snow this morning, so I took the gutless Exploder. Everyone was doing about 20mph on the road that they usually do about 60 on (speed limit is 45). Fast forward to the highway that hasn't been plowed, and they all went full retard and were doing at least 75. Most of my slipping and sliding was done on the uncommonly-traveled roads. Didn't need the Ferd for the trip.

I had this recently with a Landrover while driving on the highway, which was also driven by an rear end in a top hat driver apparently. Turns out Landrover headlights are at the exact same height as my rearview mirror, and it only got worse as they tried to crawl up my rear end until they finally moved over to pass me(while the left lane was pretty much devoid of traffic, there was no reason to crawl up my rear)

New Explorers (and most other tall trucks with HIDs) have their lights aimed so that the "cut-off" is right in line with my rear-view mirror. It's like they are constantly flashing their high-beams at me.

Light chat: I totally get what everyone is saying here. My 82 Volvo has a 77 front end, meaning single round headlights and that's it. Like this: Most other cars around me are so much brighter than i have been seriously considering replacing all my light bulbs in the car with LEDs. Priced it out and it would be around $250 give or take. It's a bit steep, but I feel if I go through with it, my car will be more visible on the road. Also, thanks to all the brighter lights on the road, makes it harder to see my instrument cluster as well since my interior lights are 30+ years old. Might have to get that upgraded too. Solar Coaster posted:Light chat: Certainly replace the instrument bulbs, they've probably just worn down and a new set will be enough. If the headlights aren't on relays, adding them may give you enough extra power to make a difference. If not, you'll still have a nice setup. I did all of these in my 72 pickup and haven't felt the need to replace anything else. Although I have an aversion to spending money on things that don't improve how the vehicle runs.

Evidently mine (stock) in the '08 are obnoxious, too, despite being calibrated and aimed properly. I've been flashed several times. When I flash back I usually get an 'oh poo poo' sort of response.

It'll run you between $1500 to $3000 depending on whether you need more than the obligatory hours behind the wheel with an instructor car. Most fail the theory exam at least once. The practical driving test takes 30-45 minutes with the examiner taking great care to check if you have your wits about you in many situations and can ask you to just "follow the signs to xxxx" etc. Another Norwegian, I see?
