zoux posted:Is there an actual term for that style of headgear? Not really. When it's just sort of stapled to their face (Shatterstar) the closest real thing would be called a circlet or possibly a tiara. There might be some very specific term from costuming or something, who knows. When it is integral part of the overall clothing, like Gambit or Cyclops, then the closest actual clothing was called a chaperon - although that is a much looser mantle-and-cowl arrangement than what you see in a comic, so it's close-topped. When it's open-topped, the closest thing to that sort of fitted head-and-neck covering you might see is a wimple (like nuns or medieval women wore).

Yeah, it's funny that we go on about Liefeld's pouches but at least superfluous pouches are still hypothetically functional, that cut-up balaclava thing is both utterly useless and just weird as a fashion accessory, Lee apparently invented it from whole cloth ( ) just for the 90s.

Closest thing I can think of would be amateur wrestling headgear. I guess it's supposed to continue the costume up to the head without concealing the face or hair. They still don't look as silly as whatever the hell Kirby gave Scarlet Witch.

Booster Gold has been wearing very similar headgear since 1987, complete with goggles. The Atom wore something similar in the late '80s, and Animal Man and Steve Ditko's Starman (Prince Gavyn) had them when they first appeared in the '70s.

Havok even tells Iceman that as much as he'd like it to his suit doesn't negate his powers right before Trask uses it to negate his powers. I don't think it was ever mentioned again despite Havok following the Summers' tradition of angsting over his powers. Huh, I thought First Class' "chest version of Scott's visor" thing was actually adapted from the comics and not a unique development.

I think it may be Animal Man, drawn by Carmine Infantino and later Jack Sparling- he had one as early as 1965. The Grant Morrison reboot series may actually responsible for the whole "Leather jacket over spandex" costume thing from the nineties, to add to his sins. Buddy Baker is responsible for terrible things.

Wasn't the original Captain Marvel an early example too? Dunno if he had that look in his first appearance (1967), but he had it by 1973.

Starman had an open faced cowl back in 1941: ... which was pretty much riffing off the scifi helmets from the late 1920s: (That Aug 1928 Amazing Stories magazine featured the first Buck Rogers story but the cover art was for some other character) Captain Atom had an open top cowl back in 1960: None of them are exactly the same as Gambit's head sock but they're clearly precedents. Edit: Here's Flash Gordon wearing a headsock which is pretty similar to Gambit's 90s headsock way back in 1936 Snowglobe of Doom fucked around with this message at 16:06 on Jan 6, 2015 |

It's a pretty neat modernisation of the original costumes if you ask me. Why couldn't they have dug out those instead? Actually, is that series even canon any more? I also kind of like the tweaked version of the Phoenix costume they did for MUA2 (although it might bit a bit too Jim Lee with the lines for some people's tastes):

It is a big improvement but I think they went a little bit too far. I would have liked to see them hold onto a little more of the coloration (which I think works better with her hair and power effects) and possibly the bare shoulders and glove flair from her Jim Lee suit.

I loved Psylocke's hooded armour costume so much, and the characterization that went along with it. She wasn't a warrior, she provided tactics and support! That's pretty unique, I think. But then she became a ninja.
