Lyrics are an essential part of the themes and motivations behind metal. They are one of the most literal manifestations of the concept behind the music which is further represented in the music itself. Metal without high regard for the lyrics and driving concepts behind the music is entertainment, not art. The common failing in this regard is modeling music after another band rather than a band's own vision and creation. Aimless rehashes tend to be completely worthless garbage like the pizza thrash of Lich King.

Spectral Lore's lyrics are really fuckin cool. Also partial to Jute Gyte's stuff, as absurdly bleak and pessimistic as it is.

Peace Sells still confuses me. It's like he started writing a song about disillusionment, ran out of steam, and decided to end it by chanting the song title for a while.

At least it sounds cool I guess, which is the most important part.

The cold-war era certainly shaped attitudes in metal. The general nature of media and the monolithic presence of what was released - image, lyrics, and sound - led bands to produce a more cohesive presentation of their concepts in order to present it seriously.

You're never going to shape music like this singing about pizza and beer.

I dont have any clue where I heard this from but I heard a story from someone (and yes, this sounds like Bill Brasky) but apparently at a show he picked a girl up by her crotch and brought her on stage. That's been my only thing about Manowar and whenever I hear a song by em, I think of him picking up girls by their crotch on stage.

90% of lyrics are dumb as hell in any genre. It just comes down to what you want to be dumb about. Me, I like to be dumb about vikings and dragons and mass murder, rather than this junk:

Speaking of good metal lyrics, mid period Death has a lot of good writing. I'm especially a fan of Trapped in a Corner and The Philosopher.

"You preach about how I'm supposed to be, yet you don't know your own sexuality"

That is like my favorite line in all of metal...
