Lyrics are an essential part of the themes and motivations behind metal. They are one of the most literal manifestations of the concept behind the music which is further represented in the music itself. Metal without high regard for the lyrics and driving concepts behind the music is entertainment, not art. The common failing in this regard is modeling music after another band rather than a band's own vision and creation. Aimless rehashes tend to be completely worthless garbage like the pizza thrash of Lich King.

I like looking up the lyrics to black metal bands where the words are basically imperceptible but turn out to be actually a huge long winded existential treatise on the universe or some such nonsense. I don't like looking up the lyrics to black metal bands where the words are basically imperceptible but turn out to be a long winded manifesto on national socialism.

Spectral Lore's lyrics are really fuckin cool. Also partial to Jute Gyte's stuff, as absurdly bleak and pessimistic as it is.

I think some of my favorite lyrics are the whole 1980s thrash metal political justice ones. You know, back when the Cold War was in full effect and everybody thought nuclear war was a day away.

Peace Sells still confuses me. It's like he started writing a song about disillusionment, ran out of steam, and decided to end it by chanting the song title for a while. At least it sounds cool I guess, which is the most important part.

The general nature of media and the monolithic presence of what was released - image, lyrics, and sound - led bands to produce a more cohesive presentation of their concepts in order to present it seriously. You're never going to shape music like this singing about pizza and beer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mnEmfpWFsnk

I dont have any clue where I heard this from but I heard a story from someone (and yes, this sounds like Bill Brasky) but apparently at a show he picked a girl up by her crotch and brought her on stage. That's been my only thing about Manowar and whenever I hear a song by em, I think of him picking up girls by their crotch on stage.

Eh, I can't say much when it comes to metal lyrics. Some (most) of them are loving dumb, even in songs I like. That said, I really like Nile's lyrics and read the little stories and poo poo that Karl writes in the liner notes about how he came up with them. It's not super complicated for me: I'm capable of liking metal and other genres with dumb lyrics, but if they have something personal to the writer or something I can relate to, it's a nice bonus.

Seriously though, what are we comparing lyrics here to, exactly? 90% of lyrics are dumb as hell in any genre. It just comes down to what you want to be dumb about. Speaking of good metal lyrics, mid period Death has a lot of good writing. I'm especially a fan of Trapped in a Corner and The Philosopher. "You preach about how I'm supposed to be, yet you don't know your own sexuality" That is like my favorite line in all of metal... Actual post: I'm working my way backward through Testament's catalog and I've hit The New Order. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQWrWVm9V70 Holy gently caress, I love those power metal wails from Chuck.
