A Fancy 400 lbs posted:Why is it so appalling to say that you should only do something you know a lot of people find offensive if the offense serves a point? Is it really that hard to not be a dick for no reason? Again. There is no offence in simply drawing Mohammed. Do you really think there are many people who feel offended because someone doesn't follow one particular rule of their religion? Maybe regular people actually take offence at the (perceived) message of the cartoon, not just one detail of its execution? No, I guess this is impossible. That's why neutral portrayals of the prophet also face such a strong opposition from millions of Muslims, not just cartoons and films where he is portrayed in a negative light.

This is quite cool, I thought you drew it for a minute. Anyway, the best political cartoon of the year so far is a police sketch of the guy they are trying to catch for the bombing: Generic whiteman with shades.

I think you're right though, the police sketchers probably exist to give people the impression that some important police work is happening while they wait for something to come up.

If it caused no harm or damage, then it's just as well it goes without much publicity. Let the police catch the guy, but don't give him the satisfaction of leaving a mark.

The problem with images of Mohamed is that they could become objects of veneration, instead of venerating god (essentially no graven images). A lot of Muslim cultures depicted Mohamed in art, usually with his face blanked by a veil as a sort of workaround to not producing icons of him. Persian Turkish The stringency of the "no depiction ever" only happened recently with the cartoons in 2005 (like the well known bomb-turban one) due to the reaction in provoked in the Muslim world. I mean Wahhabists were already there but the perception of the universality of the rule is not something that has that much historical presence. I think that you have to be careful assuming that depictions of Mohamed are this timeless offense, since in context the real source of the anger is hard to disentangle from the broader animosity spawned by the War on Terror. Personally I don't think that depictions of the prophet must inherently be an attack on the Muslim community, and as much as I hate to quote South Park, but they did make the point that when they depicted Mohamed in their show in July, 2001 no one reacted the way they did in 2005. The issues surrounding it right now have as much to do with the fact that many countries in the West are still/have become very hostile to Muslims in the last decade. I think the fact that people are reacting like this is a bigger issue: Munin posted:This is what we should be shouting about and decrying from the rooftops: My biggest worry with the reactions of solidarity is that they turn into a cover for once again otherizing Muslims, and painting them as all humorless extremists out to quash our precious freedoms.

My wife saw Craig Thompson talk about his book Habibi and he said in researching the book, he basically came to the same conclusion--that drawing Muhammad was OK as long as he had like a veil or something else obstructing his face. I can't find his book at the moment, but I'm pretty sure he included Muhammad and hasn't really faced any criticism or threats for that.

Is it just me, or when extremists commit atrocities "for the sake of the Prophet", doesn't that in some ways raise him to idol-like status, which is the entire point of drawings of him not being permissible in the first place?

Zeroisanumber posted:I never looked into the history of why Muslims decided that depicting Mohammed is blasphemous, but I always figured that it was a part of Orthodox Christianity's Iconoclast leanings that the Turks absorbed into their DNA after they conquered Byzantium. The veil was certainly popularized by the Ottoman court. From a while ago, but no one else seemed to notice how backwards this is (probably because this is a thread about cartoons?). The Orthodox iconoclasm of the 8th century was a reaction to the Muslim iconoclasm of the 7th century. Islam has had an intense disdain for idolatry from its inception (destroying the images of the old tribal gods was one of the things that made it possible to unite Arabia culturally and politically), and they accused Christian icons of saints of being very much the same. After the Byzantines lost the Middle East in a terrifyingly short period of time, many Christians in the east began to wonder if maybe the Muslims had a point.
