I always liked how for 50% of his free kicks, everyone on the opposing team just gives up midflight.

The best thing is it wasn't even a fluke. He always regularly scored from 35+ yards

Sure, when its very long range, not when its literally on the edge of the box.

What baffles me is the "dink it forward half a yard to mate who tees it up for him" routine. Is that simply because he has such a specific range/position he wants to strike it from?

TheRat

Either that or force the wall to break up I suppose

Closer to the wall and kicked late means it's hard for the wall to react and even harder for the keeper to know what's going on.

Is this not mostly a thing for indirect frees?

Opens up a few inches of space which in theory is enough to get the ball past the wall.

That close, on the near post, yeah that's been done plenty of times, it's rare as a % of free kicks but loving hell even kids in school do it if the keepers angle is dodgy. The right kick from that spot can be impossible to see with a wall depending on the quirks of positioning.

All up to the keeper.

Yeah why would the keeper want a wall when the free kick is on the edge of the box almost directly in front of goal, is an incredibly difficult place to score from with no wall and only the keeper to beat when when he stays on his line

Pirlo apparently dedicated years of his life to copy Juninho's techinque, and he's not even 50% of the free kick specialist Juninho was. It's loving hard to put the ball into the net like Juninho does

Didn't Pirlo end up saying that aside from Juninho's knack for reading keepers and taking distance into account, the biggest thing that allowed him to score such amazing freekicks was tha he positioned his foot/toes unlike everyone else to strike the ball?

Since your being an idiot and deliberately missing the point I'll let Pirlo say it.

quote:

My own Eureka moment arrived when I was sat on the toilet. Hardly romantic, but there you go. The search for Juninho's secret had become an obsession for me, to the extent that it occupied my every waking thought. It was at the point of maximum exertion that the dam burst, in every sense of the term. The magic formula was all about how the ball was struck, not where: only three of Juninho's toes came into contact with the leather, not his whole foot as you might expect.

Is there an up close video of this technique in action? I'm having trouble picturing how you send a ball 35+ yards with three toes and put it exactly where it needs to go. Not saying I want to replicate it because lol I'm a trash player, but it would be neat from an informational standpoint.

Edit: Something like a practice video.

I have no idea, but I'm willing to believe it because Juninho is a wizard and Pirlo wouldn't lie. The article I sourced the quote from is a good read.
