Besides recent VPN woes (Astrill iOS RIP) is anyone experiencing weird internet phenomenon? If I start running BitTorrent recently - even private trackers - my internet suddenly cuts out after a few minutes. Goes from like 2MB/s to 0 in an instant. Then if I reboot the router/modem I get internet back. This even happens running "stealth mode" with Astrill on a torrent friendly server. What's the deal here?

What internet provider do you have? I'm on Telecom Fiber. Also all my friends with Astril have complained it's gone to poo poo in the last couple of weeks. I'd suggest just bailing and going with vypr or something else which is more reliable. I was turned off Astril years ago when they cancelled my service without refund because I had the audacity to log into the VPN on my desktop and laptop simultaneously. Normally if I was limited to one connection they'd just boot me off the other (which is fine), but they said over support since I broke their TOS and my account was terminated, sorry bro. This was a couple of years ago and I think they've laxxed up on that but it was such bad customer service I just decided to gently caress off forever. Now I have a VPN that's faster, the same price, and allows 5 connections simultaneously. It seems crazy that Astril doesn't have a config cert file to download with server addresses like every other VPN provider has. Basically it's a small file you download that fills in the VPN part under settings or the OpenVPN app on your internet settings on the iPad or iPhone. I know Vypr, Pandapow and a few others have this for sure. fake edit: did 2 seconds of google research and saw Astril only uses Ipsec won't let you use OpenVPN on iOS even though it's totally available and that's why it's broken. Astrill has OpenVPN certs, they're just buried in the website. What speeds do you get with vypyr or whatever?

Lol actually gently caress everything as if a scheme concocted by the government itself, my vpn disconnected like seconds after I posted that and will not reconnect now. Also I use pandapow for personal use and vypr at work since they have better speeds/are way more expensive and they only allow 3 or 5 logins per account. Generally several MB/s down and up on Vypr. One issue some people have with them is that they aren't so totally off the grid taking bitcoins and never logging a thing, but I don't do anything super secret I really care that much. Expressvpn, Vypr and Pandapow seem to be (have been) the ones my nerdy friends in our nerdy online industry seem to like the best, though. That said, neither Vypr nor Pandapow is connecting for me now so  e: Oh also Vypr throttles some P2P stuff which makes it lovely for personal use but ideal for work since stupid interns can't use it to pirate shadow of mordor then complain to me about why their torrents don't work. That said, I've had Pandapow crap out for a few hours here and there, disconnect, etc... over the last two yearsI've used it but Vypr has been rock solid and this is the first time I've had issues connecting to them ever. Torrents on non-VPN'd desktop still chugging along at several MB/s though! Also my PS4 is downloading some update at like 1.5MB/s which is speed I have never seen from that thing before.

My contract with my current ISP is about to expire and I am thinking about switching since their service in the past few months has been rapidly worsening (especially with regards to VPN). What ISP do you guys recommend? China Telecom? Or is all the ISP equally  'd?

I can use VPN on them without issue (my 2 post freakout for 5 minutes of downtime above discounted). I have much better service with their fiber than their ADSL, though. Try to get that if you can. The cheapest Fiber is actually cheaper than the most expensive ADSL here and it's faster.

I haven't had any Astrill issues either but I think I'm going to get a backup vpn since it's cheap. I saw a thing on NYT about a new push to block VPNs and the Chinese government actually admitting for once that they were indeed disrupting VPNs so it seems like a good idea to have a backup. I assume that as long as China is connected to the rest of the world it's not possible to ever truly seal all the holes and block all VPNs, but they can make it annoying.

For what it's worth, Vypr sucks for me on mobile (using either the app via openvpn or chameleon) and on desktop. Express VPN used to work well until recently. Right about the start of 2015 is when all the VPN's I've been using went to poo poo.

Get the Chinese name of the active ingredient on your phone, walk into a pharmacy, show them the phone. See if they give you what you want. There's not really a specific list of available medicines. I just took a coworker from the US into a pharmacy to get some stuff he has a prescription for in the US and this method worked flawlessly and his medicine only cost like 10 RMB instead of whatever the exorbitant prices are in the U$A.
