I played a little bit of Persona 2 on PSP after only playing the first, and I think it's pretty okay. The battle mechanics don't seem too hot at the beginning, though. Talking with demons is okay, I guess...? I then tried playing Persona 3, and I really don't like the visual novel approach. No cutscenes, and you click where you want to go. If there was titties in it it'd be one of those weird/bad porn dating sims.

Play Persona 3 FES instead of P3P if that bugs you.

P4 had a nice auto-teleport to most areas but each day was basically me going from map to map looking for characters with an exclamation point and that's really lame. And yet I'm really excited for Persona 5's rendition of Shibuya. I really like walking around in Akiba's Trip. Now there's a game that could have really benefited from giant exclamation marks instead of tiny red name markers that only appear when you get within a foot of an NPC.

Wow, this game really is slick for its time, isn't it? An auto feature and the combat mechanics already feel like they will get very interesting with combat items and Unites. The equip system isn't too painful. It's extra pretty with filters on and high settings, too. Also LOL at Rina totally boning down on that fool at the mountain pass . Didn't see that coming. Thanks for the solid rec again!

Quite a few PSX games were slick for their time - it was definitely one of golden ages for RPGs. The fact that Suikoden uses sprites means it holds up to time as well. So yeah, it's a good game. The gameplay is kind of forgettable by this point but everyone will always remember Suikoden 2's story and main characters. I have a distinct memory of the thing to do at the time of its release was to compare it to FF8 and everyone shaking their drat head at Squall/Rinoa and comparing their lovely relationship to Jowy/Nanami and the Hero. As a side note, it took me like 2 years to find an affordable Suikoden 2 copy as a kid Rough times!

I had a 64 before I had a PS2, so sadly I missed out on a lot of this stuff. And I had a Sega instead of a SNES. So yeah, I didn't start hitting the RPGs til PS2 and even then not even that heavy besides mostly what I talked about earlier in the thread. I had played a big chunk of FF7 on PC before my friend wanted it back (I later played it through on my PS2) but yeah. That's probably why my top RPGs are FFX and X-2 (although I really stand by X-2's combat system especially), those will be fun to play whenever I can get the sadstalgia outta my heart haha. exit fate is pretty good. I woudln't say 'better than Suikoden II' but it's pretty good. The art is pretty bland at best and actively terrible at worst, and it's got the same imbalance problems that all suikoden games and suikoden-likes have, but the combat's fun and the writing has its moments.

corn in the bible posted:100% false. I agree with this, but it's still good filler for someone looking to scratch that Suikoden itch after they finish Suiko I, II, and V. Certainly could have been better installment than IV, and maybe even III, depending on what you enjoy out of the series. Art withstanding, but it's still OK even rather impressive all else considering for a one-man project.

Exit Fate is nice in that "wow this was made by one guy" and it is serviceable. It was entertaining enough to finish but I've forgotten everything about it other than the annoying strategic battles.

Exit Fate is bad, but the guy whose interests partially intersect with mine made it and then gave it to me for free which means my saying so makes me at best a hater and at worst a liar a criminal and a thief. The DS Dragon Quest IV is really good though, I love everyone's moose and squirrel russian accents in chapter 2.

I'm diving 426 pages into this thread to say I started up Neverwinter Nights 2 for the first time and holy poo poo has there never been a worse camera system in existence. I'm so glad I abandoned my mad quest to power through the OC by the tail end of the first act and skipped right to Mask of the Betrayer. The difference in quality back to back is staggering.

You should have at least palyed the start of the second act. There's this really awesome courtroom drama quest there. But yeah, the rest of that game is painful. Orcs.

The original campaign has some high points interspersed throughout slow crawling through dungeons that are much, much longer than they ought to be. I personally couldn't complete it; I burned out on boring single-player D&D fights and long-rear end dungeons at some point after you get your own town. Mask of the Betrayer fixes the original's issues by instead having short bouts of D&D fighting interspersed throughout long talky/dialogue parts. I'd skip right to it, personally.

I enjoyed the OC but it dragged in parts. I definitely couldn't fault someone for not being able to finish it.

Is there any God Mode mod for Neverwinter 2 that's not the console? Because I just want to play Mask of the Betrayer but geez if that game's combat system isn't overly convoluted and not fun. Using the console cheats just makes the game all wonky looking and its bit annoying.

I don't see how it would make a game weird looking. Otherwise, grab a savegame editor and give yourself 10K Hitpoints or something.

Travis in IV and Cathari in V are a little worse since one is waiting at the end of an early-game dungeon for no reason and the other has an incredibly short recruitment window, respectively.

I finally got a chance to play Growlanser: Wayfarer of Time on PSP and it was pretty good, all things considered. Setting aside the weird Growlanser character design where everyone looks like they're wearing clothes made out of polished metal, the Mission Completes were actually somewhat challenging, the character customization was fun (if a bit grindy) and, like any good Growlanser game, it just breaks wide open by itself in the latter half and lets you just wipe out entire maps with one spell-doubled cast of Earthquake. Satisfyingly, the best way to use Remus is to keep him within an inch of death at all times. The story was entertaining enough if you ignore some of the complete nonsense around the main character and Frayne, and there's an evil jerk story path available in NG+. It's all I wanted from a Career Soft game. On the other hand, catching up new characters' skills, knacks and spells is a pain in the rear end, the female characters' outfits are questionable (to say the least), and the game really, really wants to force the MC into a physical role even though he's one of the better casters, sadly.
