Is it possible to see the wear on the individual gun I'm thinking of buying? It seems like the answer is "no" and only the FN version comes up, but I've also seen stickers on people's guns

When you're looking at the "Listings" part of the market page, below the price graph, you can mouseover the thumbnails and see an arrow in the bottom right. Click that and it'll give you the Inspect in Game link for that particular skin. Definitely worth doing if it's a more expensive skin, you can sometimes get higher wear levels that still look pretty good and save some money.

Why do people do complicated lineups for smoke instead of doing a bind toggle for cl_showpos and just getting the numbers right? Instead of remembering a complicated "stand on this oddly colored spot on the ground, line up this edge and this tree branch you just stand at x=147.49 y=1.734 angle = 123 elevation =67 or w/e and its perfect every time?

You actually made me go check if cl_showpos is cheat protected, I thought it would be

But as complicated as you're trying to make those nade spots sound it's still easier remember those things visually than reference a set of 6 numbers (with the three angle ones needing to be pretty much exact).

I mean if you really do your nerd cs almanac poo poo then you're not restricted to having visual references, go forth and find the sickest nade spots and report back the position numbers

That's odd because I did just that and couldn't notice a difference. Although now it looks like "etched" skins don't wear like more colorful skins, they just get darker which is why I couldn't tell differences in condition (I'm looking at the M4A1 Basilisk).

Yeah, there are some skins that don't wear in the same way other skins do. An AK-47 Jaguar field tested looks nearly the same as a factory new one, it's just a darker/slightly more faded shade all over. Some skins are great for when you want something that looks factory new but you don't want to pay factory new price.

So, I just played two rounds of this game.

This is the first time I've played CS since... oh... 2001ish. Whenever CS 1.0 came out for HL1, I stopped playing shortly after that.

Nice to see the core gameplay and controls haven't changed, though after playing modern shooters with ADSing and crap, it was weird getting used to the whole movement and shooting meta.

Otherwise I didn't recognize most of the guns, had people yelling gibberish locations at me and then telling me I suck and am a human being, so nothing's changed there, either.

I dunno... used to play seriously and was in clan matches and not a terrible player back in the day... now I just feel like I'm too old (33) and slow for this poo poo or something. Or is it just that the community is so far up its own rear end that if you haven't been around for every iteration to know every little pixel perfect jump and grenade throw for every map, you will never be decent? The last FPS I've played was Planetside 2 for the last 2 years, basically, and I'm alright at that, but holy poo poo, across those 2 rounds or so, I had a total of... oh... like 12 kills and about 15 assists, that's it. Kinda depressing. I guess this is what aging athletes feel like? :emo:

2 rounds? I think you mean 2 games, old man

Real talk, you'll never be a super sick CS gamer, but that's a dumb thing to aspire to anyway. Applying some tactical sense and learning how to aim/control recoil should make any player with eyes and hands above average skill. If you're playing matchmaking and getting your rank assessed, then don't expect to be playing with people of similar skill right away. Given that you haven't played in like a decade and a half I don't think it was realistic to break in and be good. Planetside is a different kettle of fish entirely.

Knowing pixel perfect jumps and nades is the kind of marginal gains only needed to break the very top ranks. I'd consider myself better than 95% of players and I've never once looked up a nade throw or jump. Life's too short to give a poo poo, unless you're actually really trying to git gud. That said, lots of people have posted videos of that sort of stuff from a pro player called AdreN on Youtube, and have high praise. So check that poo poo out if you want.

So when you hit view community servers it shows you 3rd party servers right? And when you use the find game for me feature its using internal valve matchmaking and internal servers to host matches? I like the more casual and bigger matches but I don't like the extra money and no team damage, full armor every round. I want the atmosphere of a 12/12 server with the rules of tournament play is what I'm saying. Does anyone have suggestions for 3rd party servers that use rules like I want? I noticed the goon server is 14 max and when there's only 7 people on your team everyone is critical. I'm hesitant to join. I don't want to be a burden in a game I'm trying to re-comprehend. I'm realizing even though I spent hundreds of hours on the old maps the new textures really throw me off. I'f you go back and look at old CS videos the graphics were incredibly plain.[[[ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PhWgImLxM9o ]]] I never had a problem recognizing a target long range and firing on it but with the modern graphics I just can't pick them out anymore. I think I might have to concede that CS:GO is a type of game I just can't compete in.

I'm going to keep trying I guess. I dropped 20 bucks on it at least and my computer can't run much else.

edit: ^^^^ The 14 player limit is for spectators, the goon server is for 5v5s. And if you suck, no one will care. There's a huge range of skill levels on sub.io. If you tell everyone you're new and are willing to listen to criticism people won't rage at you. They might yell, but just that's a heat of the moment thing. :)

Yeah, a lot of skins that aren't decals to be scratched off get degrees of patina on them instead. Although they can still be worth looking at. On a Basilisk there probably isn't that much difference skin to skin, but if you were getting a Case Hardened AK or something you might want to check the different patterns.

The goon server is 5v5 , the other 4 slots are for spectators. Nobody plays >5 v >5 seriously. You get used to the visuals by playing more, I read a quote from some pro saying it took him 2 weeks to automatically recognize the new player models. Dont worry about being a burden in a match. Deathmatch until you're comfortable with the mechanics and then jump into competitive matchmaking. You'll be matched with equally terrible players. You'll soon see the attraction of 5v5 competitive. Once comfortable hop in the goon server if you want. The absolute worse thing that can happen is someone will say "Wow dude you're bad".

Remember the golden rule; everybody is terrible.

I took like a 10 year break from CS as well (except for following the competitive scene, as I had to cheer for some RL friends who were pretty successful internationally). Just keep playing, you'll re-learn the game eventually. I started in the silver ranks but after 30-40 match wins I climbed my way to MGE/DMG level.

And then I get 4th on the board and we loving 16-0 the other team.

Also getting my rank assessed right now, though I'm 2/3 for wins. And middle of the pack every time. It seems like so far, no matter how good our team is, I'm right in the center. If this keeps up, my 30-y/o rear end an average player forever.

I play semi-regularly on this clans community competitive servers - I definitely enjoy some 12v12 games with the competitive rule set late at night or when I don't feel like committing to a full match. The skill level on community competitive servers like these is generally much higher than casual games so keep that in mind. You definitely need to work on learning 5v5, but servers like these are good for learning maps and trying out different CT spots etc.

My last game, we were 15-2, and the guy decided he wanted to play a little more, so he let the bomb go off.

Didn't save the AWP, just stood on the bomb holding def kits and laughing in voice chat.

We eventually won, but 16-10, which is quite a bit less comfortable. And we had to do it after a few eco rounds, since they wasted all our money, and most of the team had bought out for the match point.

Magical indeed.

Is it just resetting the spring tension on the microswitches? I've had to do that three times for my Trackman at work, and I've gotten pretty drat good at it, so such "maintenance" probably wouldn't bother me.

Then again if it was an easy job I'd probably source some more robust microswitches and replace whatever poo poo Logitech is using.
