Lumberjack Bonanza posted:Homeopathy and holistic medicine often get confused, but at least holistic remedies often involve things that are actually things. Which can cause holistic medicine to be more dangerous than homeopathy. Despite always being stupid, homeopathy is only dangerous if you take it in place of real medicine. I can't see him doing the anti-vaccination movement in a full 15-minute segment, but he might touch upon it. There's not all that much to go into, is there? You should get vaccinated, and the bulk of reasons not to are terrible. Seems simple enough.

That's becoming a new major problem in China, since idiots believe in TCM and use it constantly, but TCM doesn't work. So the people peddling the herbs will add actual medicine to it so it will be effective and thus get them more business, but they have no idea what the gently caress they're doing because they have no medical knowledge. And thus you get people making their dried cockroach tea laced with a lethal dose of acetaminophen or whatever.

NoEyedSquareGuy posted:How would this actually work? Presumably you would have to get vaccinated by going to a doctor and having them administer the shot, unless there are places where you can just buy the vaccine on its own and do it yourself at home like some weird vaccine junky. I assume any doctor, anywhere, wouldn't agree to some idiot parent's request to water down the vaccine before administering it until only the "spirit of the vaccine" remained. Homeopaths talk them into it. The absolute worst thing about this is that the parents then go around telling everyone their child is fully vaccinated and no one knows any different until an actual medical practitioner just happens to ask the right questions, as in this case.

He could do a full segment on it if he really dug into and explained stuff like the history of anti-vaccination and how the whole thing was started by that scumbag British doctor who was just trying to peddle his own vaccine. I would hazard a guess that a lot of anti-vaxxers don't know the full history and how it was always full of poo poo.

Astro Nut posted:I'm not entirely convinced that this wouldn't actually start a new Falklands War. After the way Argentinians responded to a toothless Falklands War joke on the part of Top Gear, I'm fairly certain that any time any British person mentions the Falklands there's some kind of rioting in Argentina. (For those who didn't hear about this, for an Argentina/Chile special one of the cars had a license plate that said "FLK 82" or something like that and the Argentinians responded by attacking the crew and chasing after them with mobs. The show was escorted out of the country. This wasn't just the usual Top Gear brand of editing; there's other video of the attacks on the crew out there. Their official line is that it was just a coincidence, but it was pretty obviously a set up for some kind of cheesy "Don't mention the war" joke and then they'd point out the license plate. They had a replacement one ready to go that was a more generic insult.) Random Stranger fucked around with this message at 22:57 on Feb 13, 2015 |

The second plate was going to be a gag they used at the end when they were supposed to play car soccer, but they never got around to that on account of being chased out of the country by an angry mob. The plate was H982 FKL. Vanity plates are hard to get in the UK but you can swap plates with people and sometimes owners of special cars try to get plates related to their car. It was a Porsche 928. It's likely that the owner of the car back in the nineties got the plate because 982 is close to 928. When you sell a car in the UK the plates go with the car. Everyone says that because the plate had been on the car since the 90s it's proof they didn't plan it. But what if they searched the plate first, then came up with the idea for what class of cars to use based on what they found?

At this time Clarkson doesn't deserve the benefit of the doubt due to past antagonistic actions but I don't think the numberplate was the issue here. The problem was driving into a except I only anti-british area while being the most old school British person alive. It would be like someone from a super Republican programme going into a super loyalist part of Belfast and getting confused when they get a bad reaction.

You might be confusing it with the 924 or 968 or something, which were the cheap ones. The 928 was almost 10 times as much and one of the most expensive production cars at that time. 968: 928: Aanyway, it's a) unlikely that this was anything more than a coincidence, and b) in any case the reaction was absolutely ridiculous. Reminder that they drove around Vietnam on a bike painted with the American flag while blaring Born in the USA, and nothing at all happened.

You're right, I had no idea that in 1977 it was $28k ($109k in today's money). You can find them now for about $20k so I assumed they were much cheaper than the 911 of the era.

Cigarette companies still haven't really given up on the plain packaging fight in Australia. The court cases are done but last year one of Murdoch's papers had a few articles claiming that plain packaging wasn't working at all, with the only evidence being research that was funded by tobacco companies. Nobody actually reads that newspaper though so it wasn't really going to convince anyone of anything.
