If you've ever read their annual stock QA roundtable you realize that the people that own stock in Nintendo are massively stupid, to the point where they have no idea what the company even does or makes. In the end all that matters to them is that they're making money, and Nintendo seems like they're actually on their way to do that now.

I'd imagine Nintendo would probably make mobile games using characters they have. So while VC games or Majora's Mask on the App Store might not happen, something like Pokemon Shuffle would make sense on the store. The Puzzle and Dragon's Mario Game could work on a phone if they themselves published it or something.

I downloaded and played Pokemon Shuffle for a bit. There's a bunch of things suggesting that it's bound for an iOS version, probably sooner rather than later. The game is pretty much IAP iOS game.txt, combining the top and bottom screens for an iOS port would work perfectly on a portrait device like the iPhone, but most notably the game doesn't take advantage of any of the 3DS' "exclusive" features--including 3D.

That's right, Pokemon Shuffle's top screen doesn't even offer 3D functionality. It stays flat, no matter how much the slider's pushed up.

So yeah, I'd say an iOS version is inevitable.

True, but with Candy Crush raking in $1.3b last year in IAP alone, my point was more that they're leaving a stupid amount of money on the table.

That's what really makes me think Shuffle was a Pokemon Company initiative and not a Nintendo one, even though trying to figure out who exactly owns what when it comes to the Pokemon license is a convoluted bitch and a half. It's been obvious TPC has always been more willing to try out new things, the card game has had an online version for PC for years and they've broadcasted various kinds of tournaments with caster commentary on Twitch long before Nintendo even had an official Twitch channel. poo poo they even have the soundtracks for every gen available on iTunes.

Found the quote I was looking for:

http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/stock/meeting/140627qa/index.html

quote:

I do not understand video games and I even feel angry because, at Nintendo’s shareholders’ meetings, the shareholders always discuss things relating to video games or such childish topics as “what the future of video games should be,” while I, for one, was flabbergasted that Mr. Iwata continues to hold his position although he had said that he would resign if the company’s performance were bad*.
I hope that Nintendo’s shareholders’ meeting will become an opportunity where the shareholders discuss the company’s business operations from the viewpoints of capital gain and dividends.

and

quote:

After a PTA meeting the other day, someone told me that they wished the size of the screen of Nintendo’s current handheld device could have been manually extended to become twice the size both horizontally and vertically. It would be more impressive to children playing with it and reduce their parents’ concerns about the impact on their eyes. In addition, the Japanese government is planning to have special zones for casinos for the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020, but it is said that many people are unfamiliar with casino games. I think it a good idea to create an application in which users can learn how to play and practice these games.

anyway, see ya

The first day I had the N3DS, I started out at around 50%. After spending about a week with it, I'm now running at 100%. It took a little time to adjust. I played a five hour session, yesterday and had no irritation. In the past, I've used NVIDIA 3D Vision monitors, Sony HMZ-T1, and Oculus Rift DK2. They all required a warm up period, after first use. N3DS has a short warm up period, likely due to covering such a small field of view.

I have an 8GB card in my old small 3DS, and I have a 32GB card ready for the New 3DS. Should I do the initial setup on the New 3DS, transfer stuff to the larger card, then do the NNID transfer?

You can first move everything into the 32GB card, have it on your old system, and then do the standard system transfer (the one that doesn't copy anything over WiFi). After the process is over, you will be requested to put the card in your old system on the new one.

I am however assuming your 32GB card is a microSD and you have an adapter to put it on your old 3DS to get things started.

Ahahahaha it turns out that the 17 minutes were to get ONE heart back. Now it's a half hour to get a second heart. That's actually worse than most of the iOS IAP games I've played. Like, twenty minutes will refill five hearts in Card Wars.

I'm gonna try closing the game to see if it'll still recharge when it's closed so I can play some Majora's Mask. Probably won't work, but we'll see.

It's exactly like Candy Crush and the other King games which recharge one live every half hour to a maximum of five.

edit: You can also trick most mobile games by disconnecting from the internet, setting your clock ahead, and reloading the game. There's a good chance that works here too.

They are a publicly-traded company, but that has different implications in Japan than it does in the United States. An American company's responsibility to its shareholders is paramount, whereas in Japan shareholders are just one of a number of different groups and entities to which a company is beholden, and as such shareholders in Japanese companies have much less say in what the company does. It'll take more than shareholders pitching a fit to get Nintendo to do something the company's management doesn't want to do.

e: This could be changing soon, however. The Abe government has been trying to implement more neoliberal economic policies and there have been a lot of rumblings over the past few months that an overhaul of Japan's corporate governance policies, to bring them more in line with the West's, could be in the cards.

So here's what sucks about Pokemon Shuffle- It's all the worst parts of an energy system combined with all the worst parts of a free to play life system. It's a real weird design decision the way they did this, and is ultra-counterproductive to monetization- At least if you're listening to what people say monetizes well on iOS. The easiest thing to compare this to is Candy Crush. When you download Candy Crush, you've got your initial five lives and the first dozen or so levels are ridiculously easy to the point that it'd be hard to fail any of them. You've already played a ton of the game for free before you start failing, and that is when it tells you to come back later... As you'll hit level 15 or something, not be able to complete the level five times, and then it tells you to come back or pester your friends for lives.

In Pokemon Shuffle, your lives are burnt regardless of whether or not you complete a level. It makes for an ultra-harsh first launch experience because you're hitting artificial stopping points before you hit difficulty stopping points. I'm still in the early levels where it's so easy I'm not sure it's possible to not beat levels, but I'm still being forced to wait as the hearts serve the dual purpose of both lives and energy. If this was a mobile game, some monetization expert and whoever you've got in charge of optimizing your user acquisition would have forced this change during soft launch.

But, hey, Pokemon. People will put up with it.

I am very hopeful that Nintendo stays the hell away from F2P model. There is a ton of chaff on the iTunes store (Play store is even worse) and the demand for premium priced games is not great. Of course that's compounded by a lot of devs not updating same games for new OS releases, but that's another story. Although with that Pokemon Shuffle game Nintendo is going the route.

On a different subject, I received the new black 3DS XL which I apparently ordered at Best Buy couple weeks back and completely forgot about. Now to decide if it's going back or not... The nub seems neat so far but not as good as circle pad, IMO. What are some good device covers/protectors for the device that people are using? Any 3DS XL screen protector should work I assume, but covers should be different.

Ugh... While Nintendo management has been ... shall we say less then perfect, shareholder based decisions are ALL about SHORT term profit. For a lot of companies, that's not a good thing. There is a reason, for example, that Dell went private. Then there are people like Carl Icahn who live to get in, mess companies financials for short term gain, sell and get out.
