Notably there are rules that Blizzard just doesn't care to enforce anymore. RP realms actually have specific behavior and naming rules that prevent specifically targeting roleplayers with "verbal or physical abuse" and are supposed to change any names that are lore-breaking or not fantasy. It's technically still a policy but if you spend a few seconds on a roleplay server you will see that it just isn't enforced any more. Though in the days that it was, it was pretty glorious. There were guilds who would specifically transfer to RP realms because they couldn't cut getting a server first on their PvE/PvP realm. They'd show up with a ton of policy breaking names, the whole server would report them, and basically the entire guild would get their names changed. <Mean Girls> on Wyrmrest Accord was hilarious in particular.

There's a flood of them though, so tons slip through the cracks due to most of them being one off characters that no one ever sees again. In other news, I dug up this old gem of MMO griefing earlier today and thought i'd share it. It's from Asheron's Call. Cracked had it in an article about the seven most elaborate dick moves in gaming. It's arguably not even the worst one on the list too. quote:Turbine ran a year-long story triggered by players shattering precious crystals, because chasing shiny objects and killing things are all MMO gamers ever do. Nah they're all still looked into, deleted characters are stored, and the chat at the time is automatically added to the right click reports, character deleted or not. RP servers are a nightmare for things like this in general as instead of right click reporting meaning we get everything needed, instead you have a 500 word report about constant harassment even though they refuse to use ignore (which is needed to take things further as they have to use other characters and intentions at that point are clear) which will make no difference to the outcome anyway. Alot are reporting what sounds like could be serious harassment outside of the game and they just do not loving get it that at that point it's a bit over a GM's head. Yeah im sure that 3 hour suspension will sure stop the petty bickering on facebook and guild forums -__- Cursing in public chat generally will not land you in any serious trouble unless you're being inflammatory enough for a few people to report you at the same time, but the punishments are pretty minor in those cases anyway. To the previous guy that got suspended and pasted the chat, it was not for cursing, but for inciting suicide, which is something that has to be taken seriously regardless of context for legal reasons. But yeah it's always more satisfying to bust someone that knew they were violating policy and trying to cover their tracks by deleting characters, same with scammers that try to split gold over characters and other accounts, or buy poo poo from the AH before the gold can removed for example. Im taking it all son

Dark Souls 2 has a PVP mechanic called "covenants" which allow you to join certain factions that have different goals, abilities, territories and rewards. One of the covenants - the Rat King Covenant - is unique in that instead of invading the game world of another player, you drag another player who has "trespassed" a particular area into your own game, trapping them in that area with you (and the NPC creatures who are hostile to them, but not to you) until they kill you, make it to the boss room, or die a horrible death. One of the areas where you can do this is also used by many players (myself included) to farm for a particular item - the Vanquisher's Seal, which makes your bare fists do a ludicrous amount of damage. The method for farming this item involves causing a particular enemy to respawn by using an item called a Bonfire Ascetic. The trade-off is that when you use a BA, the difficulty of the area increases by an entire NG+ cycle, and anyone who plays 'Souls games can tell you that upping the difficulty to NG+ while you're still at a low level is not insignificant. Enemies have much more health, hit much harder and are generally more aggressive. Oh, and certain areas feature even stronger versions of normal enemies called Red Phantoms, which glow a dark red color and will gently caress your poo poo up if you mess up even a little. Anyway, the particular item I was farming for required me to use four bonfire ascetics, which bumped the area up to NG+4 difficulty. Not a problem for me, because I was prepared and had a plan. But it gave me an idea - other people, who are at the same low level as me, would probably NOT be prepared to deal with NG+4 enemies, in addition to a Macho Man Randy Savage cosplayer who beats people to death with his bare hands. So I joined the Rat King Covenant, and have been luring hapless newbies to their doom all night. If they make it past the rats - did I mention they inflict a "petrify" ticker with each bite that will insta-kill a player even at full health, because they do that - they're usually near death and running for their lives, at which point Randy Savage jumps out from behind the pillar where he was hiding and delivers the killing blow with his bare hands. Re: Ascetic griefing When you start the game you can pick an ascetic as a free starting item. Just rush the dragonrider and kill him with no upgrades and then pop an ascetic in heide's flame to up the difficulty of that area to NG+. Hell you don't even have to rush to him with no ugprades, there's a pretty generous range where you can find summons. Since NG+ is tailored to be challenging to characters that have finished the game, and you are in one of the first areas, the guys you summon into your world will be getting curbstomped. They don't really lose anything for dying as summoned phantom, but same as with the rat covenant they are still dying. Whether or not something is actually taken away from them as a consequence is moot, people don't like getting killed especially in completely unfair circumstances. I posted a video of it a while back but I wont bother reposting it since it's really just some guy trying to block an attack, losing half his health, and then dying shortly after. Similarly I got a character to the fume knight at a relatively low soul memory (1.2mil SM) and then stayed there, pumping an ascetic every time I beat him and summoning more people on their first game-cycle into an increasingly difficult bossfight. Fume knight is considered one of the hardest bosses, FromSoft records loss percentages and he has the highest of any boss. So why not make him even harder? By NG+4 bonfire intensity he was oneshotting half my summons with his left-handed weapon swings which is hilarious. Now that the agape ring exists, I've been thinking about doing the same expect for a really early boss. Probably flexile sentry since the last giant, pursuer, and dragonrider are all total chumps and people wouldn't notice a difference aside from the boss taking longer to kill.

Dr Pepper posted:Is it really griefing when you're doing exactly what the game expects of you? It's a qualified yes, I'd say. Griefing wouldn't be possible without challenging expectations, that can come about as specifically as one expecting one's opponent to do a bow after a duel, or as generally as forgetting one's on the Internet. There will always be low hanging fruit that gets upset too easily though, that's why there are so many SS13/MMO text walls and cheating videos that get passed off as griefs here. Simply not doing what the other guy expects is griefing, so that can include playing a game as intended and the video posted awhile back of the TF2 MLP server is an example.

I like it better than chat, actually I'M SORRY I'M SORRY I'M SORRY I'M SORRY I'M SORRY I'M SORRY I'M SOR... For Dark Souls 2 griefing I've cheated myself in a shitload of invasion orbs on the XBox version. The reason this falls under griefing is because From hosed the game up a good bit and invasions are rare as poo poo. Like, I started playing this back when the first DLC was released and the population was really high and I got an invasion or two for every 10 or so hours of playtime. It's even rarer now especially on NG. But now I'm running around the Luna belltower invading people left and right as a dark spirit and my mission is specifically to murder the poo poo out of the grey spirits. Before the recent patch grey phantoms got upgrade materials for killing hosts and hosts just got a few souls, so I was essentially invading people's games and denying them from farming. Now hosts get upgrade materials too so I kill the greys to deny them and then kill the host. I have spent so much time in the bell tower and I have never, ever seen another dark spirit other than myself when I'm the one hosting the invasions of grey spirits, so I'm pretty sure that all of the "visions of dark spirit but hole" messages on the bridge to the entrance of luna tower are all because of me (there's like 20 of them and they all have a shitload of rates) Oh and my loadout is an amazing gimmick loadout. Pyromancy with a wrist item that makes pyro hit harder, warmth for healing and lingering flames for damage. For those who don't know what lingering flames are, it's a magic where you drop a fireball that floats in mid air, and when someone comes near it it explodes with a fairly large radius of damage. With my setup even with low stats lingering flames tend to do about 850 damage which is most of a life bar at the levels I'm invading at. I run into fights in progress and start essentially dropping landmines all over the place and they gently caress people up really badly. Plus, most people are so unused to lingering flames and warmth that they don't know how to fight in and around that poo poo. I went ahead and added a flame estoc with flame weapon for maximum cheesy bullshit. It's really nice doing 150 damage through people's low fire resist shields. I also have a mage character who just hides in the bell tower with that chameleon spell and lets people search until they start breaking things trying to figure out what I turned into, and then exits through the boss door to send them back to their worlds. Then goes back and hides and does it again. TheSpiritFox fucked around with this message at 19:37 on Feb 19, 2015 |
