All through the day, I me mine
With the exception of Arctic Monkey's debut, the new DLC has just been groups with an established history of being easy to license in RB.
A7X, Weezer, Foo Fighters, and to a lesser extent Tenatious D have some of the most individually-licensed songs in the RBDLC library (discounting full albums).
I think at the moment HMX is taking the cheapest path possible to keep folks interested (considering none of the new tracks feature authoring for Keys, Pro Keys, or even background animation).
I can't recall off the top of my head which artist has had the most licensed individual tracks after Weezer and Foo Fighters' 3+ song track packs, but whoever is in that area is a good guess for any future DLC at this point.

Also Weezer is so stagnant in 2015 you could play their entire discography on shuffle and it would sound like one album.

Path of least resistance would be Soundgarden. "Been Away Too Long" is almost a certainty with the theme of this last DLC pack.

Over the last 6 months or so I've noticed a lot of renewed interest in Rock Band/Guitar Hero games in my store. I can't keep a guitar for PS3/360 in stock for more than a couple days when I do manage to find some and the games sell quickly as well. I think it's the perfect time for a comeback.

Related to this, what's a good asking price for the instruments? My buddy is consolidating and wants to offload his instruments, but thinks he can do better than gamestop. He has two guitars (RB & GH:WT), wireless drums and a keyboard. Looking at ebay, it seems like $20 is fair. Yea or nay?

What system? I couldn't find lower than like $100-150 for wireless (cymbal accepting) XBox 360 drums a few years back. I'd murder for $20.

I don't go in for the ebay gouging (the crazy $100+ prices anyway), and gamestop here (Canada) doesn't even take instruments anymore, but I typically sell wired guitars for $20 to $25, wireless guitars for $30, wired drums for $40, wireless drums for $60.

How is this any different from Rock Band, other than you like it more than Guitar Hero? They're making a sequel so they could make more money? HOW DARE THEY! Only Harmonix can do that!

(I'm still undecided on buying a new console for a new Rock Band.)

I honestly would rather play a new Guitar Hero before a Rock Band. Activision have the money to go out and get a big name artist like Zep or Floyd to make a "glorious return", wheres I feel like Rock Band 4 would be more of the same, like we've seen with the DLC. But Guitar Hero has always been the better single player game to Rock Band being the better multiplayer, which is how I like to play so. v:keke:>

After playing RB it was hard to play GH again because it felt bad and mechanically inferior. It also wasn't as tight with its charting or playing either. I tested it out by playing sections I could play perfectly somewhat poorly and it still let me get away with it. This was on a CRT with no delay either. Also I just hate the GH presentation at this point.

And the libraries, even if allowing every single previous song from the franchises, speak for themselves.

Altgough an alleged $400+$200 for a new rhythm game is insane, but I need new instruments since most of mine poo poo the bed.

There's nothing like converting a song from Guitar Hero to Rock Band to understand the level of sloppiness GH songs were subjected to (or the level of precision RB songs were graced with, whatever works).

Can you elaborate on this? Is it just how things like the notes are charted in Guitar Hero or the timing?

The charts were often very inconsistent, even within the same song. Harmonix had some strict charting standards that kept everything feeling super tight and consistent, GH sometimes felt all over the place, though it got a bit better as the series progressed. Let's not talk about some of those charts in 3, SH, or VH though, yikes.

Both. Tempo maps have the tendency to be weird, meaning they would author to an incredibly high BPM making things fit in a 4/4 tempo even when they aren't. Vocals are unrefined. On drums they had more than a few songs with tom assigned to bass drum. Plus the usual suspects (unnecessary 3 note chords, inconsistencies inside the song, overcharting, authoring of fret noises, etc.)

Thanks for the offer, but I have to pass. I did eventually jump on a not-good wireless drum deal. I'm just sort of bitchy because the rightmost pad seemed like it was dropping some notes, and whoever owned it last let the batteries explode in it. I had to file rust off the terminals to get the drat thing to power up. :what:

My main fear with Guitar Hero is that Activision has zero restraint. If there manages to be a plastic instrument revival, they try to do 6 GH games a year or some poo poo again and we return to our current dark age.

I actually think the genre would have stayed healthy, maybe not booming, if it weren't for extreme saturation. The 'casual' cycle for RB is prob like other games. Players get new games, play all the songs, have some fun with it, and then mostly shelve it. They see next game, has new songs, the cycle repeats. With the GH relentless cycle, more casuals don't have that vital cool down period and eventually just get bored of it altogether.

A good comparison is sports games IMO. People don't play Madden year round. When football season starts up, they get the new game and satisfy the itch. The GH model for Madden would be release Madden '16. Then, Madden: Classic Football Edition, based on teams from the 1950s. Madden: Future, where you play with cyborgs. Madden: Lingerie Football League. Madden: Kids Edition. Then another Blitz revival cause why not. They are then shocked when the sales of Madden '17 are lower than usual, because everyone who bought all those spinoffs are pretty much sick of football games now.

I believe the renewed interest in rhythm games are because people remembered they had fun with it - the 'bored of this' element finally faded away.

I'm sure most people would be thrilled if Rock Band 4 was nothing more than a cleaned up and optimized RB3. A healthy life cycle for the genre would be basically yearly content and tweaks, maybe a new feature or two.

Yes, I'm literally advising Harmonix to be loving lazy.

There are only two new features Rock Band 4 needs:

1. The ability add to a playlist during a song, selecting via a phone or tablet
2. The ability to identify which person is using what instrument and swap their profiles around accordingly (using Kinect)

Make sure you're a good experience.
Must-haves:

- Make the "next letter/category" button into a "page down" button instead, where holding it down still gives the list of all letters

Nice-to-haves:

- Voice search for the song library (DC does this with Kinect)
- DaWolfey's SmartGlass playlist suggestion (DC does this as well)
- A few different Breakneck settings (Fast, Faster, Fastest)
- Breakneck speed per player instead of game-wide
- Tying mics to instruments, both superficially (to avoid switching the vocals controller in and out when adding/dropping keys) and/or meaningfully (special voxtar HUD, on-stage animations, etc.)
- Stage/venue animations that are closer to RB2's
- Option to completely lock out all instruments but one from doing literally anything on the song select screen
- Custom filters for the song select screen; i.e. you can tag songs with a color/symbol and then only show songs of that category

EA was just as guilty as Activision in killing the genre with over pressing titles with track packs also. I never understood the logic behind forgetting that like, 20 track packs existed to be bought at retail stores, also helping to clog the market.

Both sides just need to real it in for the next game to not oversaturate once again imho. No stupid instruments (Rocksmith exists for people who wants real guitar, and the DJ scratch table wasn't that fun, you're a fun plastic alternative, embrace it), no three versions of each DLC (Base, Pro Upgrade, Last Years Old Model), and one title every couple of years. I have more faith in Harmonix being able to follow these than Activision, but they handled DJ Hero incredibly well, so the pedigree is there for them to do it.

All they have to do is look at how Rocksmith does it. Make one title, and make it last for like 3 years with DLC, but not too much DLC either where your weekly announcements aren't exciting. I know Harmonix took great pride in weekly DLC, but 3/4th of it was not fun and just stood there to fill a quota.

That's a funny way to spell "not my taste in music". I agree with your points otherwise, but there's always SOMEONE out there who is over the moon about Stone Sour 01 or whatever. If you're judging DLC just by the fame of the individual tracks/artists, then the "quality" definitely peaked in 2008/2009, but we got plenty of amazing tracks from start to finish. 2013 gave us American Pie, Weird Science, Rosanna, pretty much all of the Valentine's week, the Aerosmith pack, and right at the end of 2012 we got Party Hard.

But yes, physical track packs were an abomination. If the Western music game scene had started just a few years later, we would have had everything digital and the burnout would have taken longer.
