Playing DW8XL and the Battle of Fan Castle for Wu in the story mode is ridiculous.

Am I supposed to just let them flood the castle out and defend Cao Ren? I'm good enough to stop the flood, but by the time Guan Yu shows back up - both Cao Ren and the other guy are swarmed by enemy generals and don't survive long enough.

I think stopping the flood attack is one of the requirements for unlocking the hypothetical route. Just go back to it after finishing the normal route.

DW8 Fan Castle is weird, because no matter which side you're playing, you're always trying to prevent a flood attack.

Is there a way in 8E to make certain quests happen? I couldn't get Escort/Guard the Ruler to spawn, but got Assassinate the Ruler several times. Is it based on your virtue at the time? Because I was quite evil at that point.

I believe that it's based on your Virtue, though I haven't played enough to be 100% sure.

I haven't played a Dynasty Warriors title since 7 and I've had a hankering to get back into it for 8; would you recommend I start with empires or XL? I read the last few pages of the thread and it sounds like empires is pretty drat different from XL based on written descriptions, and both kind of sound cool as hell. I'll be renting on console, so price isn't an issue.

The empire-building and character-creating aspect sounds appealing to me so I'm leaning towards Empires but I figured I'd ask in case there was some kind of overwhelming "XL is a classic that if you miss out on you should kill yourself" opinion or something.

The Empires series has always been the place to do combat stuff. The mainline series is just introducing stuff and a new telling of the story.

Koei have acknowledged the audio bug and are releasing a patch in March, but have a temporary fix for it as well. The bug is, for some reason, only caused if you have DW8 save data on your system that also has the Japanese Voice DLC installed. If you're getting audio glitches this is the most likely reason why.

Superuser008

It seems the audio glitch is caused by the japanese voice DLC for DW8XL, based on reports from around the 'net. PS3 DW8E can directly import your DW7E CAW's w/out and jiggery-buggery, it's only the PS4 version that requires the FTP version for import. Playing the PS3 version here, no odd bugs yet, the frame rate is pretty inconsistent, and the texturing isn't the best, LOD changes are VERY apparent. For example in the throne room during the war councils, characters furthest away from the camera look noticeably worse than those that are closer. Not a factor on the battlefield though. Overall, it does seem easier, though the AI seems smarter in battle, in 7E it was terribly predictable. Weird in some ways though, my first playthrough was as a officer under a ruler and for the first several turns the AI ruler recruited everything down to the chickens in the street, to the point where he almost bankrupted me because he couldn't pay us all, which resolved itself with time. Super aggressive though, would usually invade twice a year at least, whole game was over in less than 10 years. Now trying it as ruler, there are certainly a lot more things to do than just the 4 choices you had in 7E.

So I have to delete the Japanese Voice DLC? Or is having the save data that corrupts it?

That would explain why I haven't encountered the bug, then.

Mainline DW games are more story and mission driven, whereas Empires basically drops 98% of that for what is essentially a really fun board game.

edit: Question. What exactly are the terms for a Narrow Victory during a defensive battle? Sometimes I take the enemy main base down to 0 and don't win, other times I do. And sometimes I can lose a base and win and others its Narrow. My whole kingdom (1/3 of China) was reduced to just me and 2 guys at one point because I kept getting Narrow Victories and wasn't sure why.

If you buy it will all the DLCs, it costs 117€. That's crazy!

You can spend them for extra bonuses at the start of a new game. Bonus levels, more resources, extra tactics, etc. +30,000 to all resources is an amazing bonus, and it's surprisingly inexpensive.

Doesn't look like it; there's a huge variety right from the start. I think they threw in everything from SW4 and maybe added a few more.

Yeah, I started noticing that when it looked like the "officer has noticed you" pop ups were in the wrong order. Then another officer told me that "they owed me once" when I helped them out on a quest.

I don't care about story in DW at this point, but I do kind of enjoy some of the structured missions and setpieces; does Empires do a good job of keeping battles more interesting than "this is your base and this is their base, go get their base"?

Not that it matters because I already bought empires on a whim because the idea of Romance of the three kingdoms with DW battles kind of gives me a semi, but I'm curious to know what I'll be getting into when I play it after work.
