Basically you take a Tactical captain to stack damage buffs, you stack the doffs that proc torpedo cooldowns, load up on 3-4 torps in a science vessel, set weapon power to 0 and crank shield/engine/aux, use science abilities to drain shields and/or transphasics to bypass them... :psyduck:

Torps share a cooldown so having more than 2 is pretty pointless.

According to the 'guide' I read quantums only have a 1.5 second shared cooldown. So theoretically, if you mount 4 with a bunch of 'chance to reduce all torp cooldowns by 5 seconds' doffs you could potentially fire them indefinitely as long as you got enough procs.

Seems like a really gimmicky setup to me.

Pretty much. It's almost entirely special snowflake pubbie bullshit.

There's a handful of people who've made it "work", but it requires a big sacrifice in skills, will only work with that specific selection of equipment and ships, and is usually done on parses in ISA or CCA or other queues with lots of unshielded hard targets. Don't ever try it unless you're drat sure you know what you're doing, and even single torpedoes are usually a trap in PVE (outside of the occasional broken thing like pre-nerf neutronic spread).

It's kinda like how everyone on reddit is constantly talking about their "tank builds" which I guess means they all love to sit around and uselessly get shot up. It sounds dumb but this explains the 90% pug ISA failure rate I see.

Science Vessels/Carriers can, Cruisers and Escorts often have too many slots and not enough energy to keep up with the kind of energy loss of 7/8 weapons, so they throw one on.

At least, that was the thinking a while back. Hard to say whether it's still current thinking.

It hasn't been the current thinking for quite awhile. With plasmonic leech and various other power-boosting equipment, even a tac has no difficulties running all 8 weapons at once. The highest dps ships are generally running 8 beams and broadsiding, or 5 anti-proton DBBs with two omni's and the kinetic cutting beam in back. You can run DHCs/turrets if you really want to be The Sisko, but that build hasn't been competitive in quite awhile.

Pretty much. Pubbies like to obsess over dumb niche builds because it makes them feel special and unique, without realizing that there's a reason nobody with any sense builds a ship like that. Tanking* is basically pointless in space PVE since any competently built ship will have high durability and high damage, and dedicated healing is pretty much in the same boat. People seem unable to accept that the space game isn't a tank-and-spank fantasy MMO.

*There's some queues like Korfez where pulling aggro off NPCs is important, but that's different from traditional tanking and still requires good damage anyway.

This hasn't really been true in a while, nah. Between warp cores, plasmonic leech, and other additions to the game over time it's trivially easy to keep weapons power maxed out even with eight beam arrays. This is a big part of why Engineers are sort of crap in space right now, since getting damage from power management is no longer really relevant. Handy for getting the full warp core AMP bonus on undergeared alts though I guess. :geno:

Unrelated, regarding the antiproton torpedo...

Borticus posted:

- Does not benefit from Weapon Power
- Does not suffer from Range drop-off
- Benefits from Torpedo Combo Abilities (Torpedo Spread, High Yield, etc)
- Enhanced by any items/bonuses that are "+Antiproton Damage" but not "+Beam/Cannon Damage"
- NOT Enhanced by +Torpedo Damage items/bonuses
- Deals Antiproton Damage, so is not subject to the same Strengths/Resists as a standard Kinetic Torpedo (this includes the Rademaker console that was asked about, though a standard Feedback Pulse WILL reflect this Torpedo)
So it's basically a weird not-energy weapon that uses torpedo skills. Which from the sound of it also means it doesn't splash uselessly against shields either like kinetic damage does. Hm.

EDIT:

g0del posted:

Really, the damage from DHC/turret is fine if you're looking at them in a vacuum. The real problem is the limited fire arc is crippling over the length of a longer queue. You'll be spending 10-20% of your time repositioning and turning to actually get your cannons to bear, and even in queues like CCA where it's fine to sit and turret you wind up losing out on the 10% damage bonus Pedal to the Metal gives. (The Anchored trait might make up for it, but that has other downsides and is a lot less generally useful). There's also the weird fact that being able to broadside means that beamboats wind up much more active and mobile as they do damage since you can circle around (or above, or below) a target and keep firing the whole time, rather than having to do strafing runs and wasting a lot of potential damage.

Nope. They boost exotic damage from stuff like gravity well or other science powers and a few weird consoles, proton damage is basically an energy type like phaser or disruptor and only boosted by things that explicitly boost proton damage. Which at the moment are the dyson console set bonuses and the crapass dyson tac consoles. :geno: The proton DHCs on the dyson destroyers are buffed by generic cannon consoles, but the rep proton weapon isn't counted as a beam or a cannon so it doesn't get that option.

A pubbie posted his entire complaint to Cryptic Customer service, their answer, and his response. He especially mad at Dreelix for suggesting that Dentals would be the custodians of the memorial.

quote:

From the detailed complaint filed the day of Leonard Nimoy's passing:

This person was just one of the many members, mostly from the same fleet, repeatedly trolling & annoying the largest portion of attendees @ Vulcan #1, with so many others complaining also; he's a member of Starfleet Dental Fleet, & from the Zone Chat, they were in all of the instances, annoying & trolling & making things generally very stressful to so many. I added a very large number to my Ignore list, if only I could save the chat & PM logs somehow..? Captain Smirk seems to be a Dev & he was there, along with Taco, another Dev. It completely soured my whole experience having party balls forcing me to dance, with colors & streamers & balloons, with every appearance placed there simply to annoy. So many people were complaining & they just wouldn't listen. I also have in my PM a chat with Dreelix@repetitiveepic where s/he said that Starfleet Dental prevailed to Capt. Smirk to allow the partyballs again, after them originally not being allowed. If these kinds of situations are going to continue, esp w/ Dreelix saying that Starfleet Dental is going to be custodians & operating the Nimoy Memorial, not only is it going to alienate a lot of players, it's going to drive them out & away from both the memorial & perhaps even the STO game. I look fwd to discussing further if possible. As it is, I put in my Bio that I'll be Ignoring "Starfleet Mental" members on sight as a result of their actions & communications today. //

Excerpted from Eypreel's response: "...You can take additional action by using /ignore CharacterName@Handle to ignore this player in your chat..." //

& my follow-up:

Very frustrating. The responder [Eypreel, Game Master, Perfect World Entertainment] seemed to completely miss my point, or not understand what seems to me to be a very detailed & clearly explained description of the situation giving rise to the complaint. I was dismayed to see that 1 of the Devs actually relented & allowed the situation to occur. I'm further distressed to understand as a result of a private message back & forth between myself & the party named from 1 of the "Starfleet Mental" fleet members saying that since they 'do so much for the community' that it gave them license to be as annoying, insensitive & inconsiderate as they wished. From many discussions with others similarly annoyed, this seems to be a consistent pattern with that fleet & occurs at any similar public gathering/event. Simply putting every member of that fleet on my "Ignore" list (alas, only a limit of 999!) does nothing for the effects of what may be, at best, described as childish antics. I'm further distressed hearing from that same party that they plan on being the custodians & managers of Leonard Nimoy's memorial; I can hardly think of a more repugnant & disrespectful turn of events & would serve, if not corrected/prevented, to negatively affect players' impression of not only STO but also PWE. If it is the wish & desire of PWE to be appearing as both welcoming to those who are yet considering purchasing a subscription to the STO game, & also being thankful & respectful of those who've already spent good money in buying a subscription, this certainly is not the the path to be following. I look forward to further discussions if the owners, staff & management as so inclined. Most Sincerely, S.W. "Cestovatelka"

[Eypreel, Game Master, Perfect World Entertainment] responded (excerpted): "...We understand how you feel, however, for comments or feedback, we may recommend to post this via our forums page for review."

Well, as you wish, Eypreel, although this isn't the only forum where this might be found posted. "...We appreciate your continued patience and cooperation."

So do I, so do I.

I posted it here, because there's no doubt the thread will be closed or removed very soon. Here's the link anyway: http://sto-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?t=1390701&page=2

This is true, however the rumored ship is supposedly arriving in the not-distant future, putting a bit of a crimp on my ability to sit on the omega stuff for months. But in the meanwhile I've been using my current cash to buy up the cheapest omegas on the market and relist for higher, so hopefully that will help on the revenue front while maintaining my stock of omegas to sell down the road for more.

Yeah. I'm not pissed or anything since it's not like I'm going to spend money on that bullshit, but this is a pretty huge mistake for Cryptic in the long run and really shows how desperate they've gotten after Delta Rising failed. It's one thing to sell upgrades to c-store ships, since those are "guaranteed" and there's no pressure for gambling addict types to dump lots of money. But the special reward ships are another matter, and Cryptic's always been smart about upgrading existing ones (to fleet, then to T5u) whenever the baseline got raised. Having one be outright replaced like this is a horrible idea since it means the special ships are no longer a safe "investment", and subtle things like that are a huge discouragement in the long run.

It's frittering away player confidence for a short term budget injection. There's been a lot of hosed up decision making from Cryptic, but this really does put the writing on the wall to how bad things are there right now.

Yeah, I know. I can totally see why Cryptic's so desperate, but they made their own bed with Delta Rising, and the more they pull blatant cash grabs like this the more they're bleeding away their long term revenue. And all it would take to fix it would be unfucking the PVE content, but... whelp.

Anyone who's still giving money to this game post-Delta-Rising deserves what they get I guess. They've driven away the casual players and spenders, and now they're screwing the whales, game's dying RIP.
